(May 14, 2005) On a perfect weather day for a track and field meet many of the athletes at the 34th Hartford Public High School Outdoor Track and Field meet treated the spectators to record times and marks. On Saturday, May 14, 2005 at the Trinity College Track Facility in Hartford Connecticut, several events saw meet records fall while other event records were close to being reset.

In the one of the first events of the day, Cory Thorne of Portsmouth NH discovered a new talent by running in the 3000m Steeplechase and winning in a meet record 9:25.17. Not to be out done, Lindsey Ferguson of Saratoga Springs won the inaugural 2000m Steeplechase in 6:44.63 despite falling on the first water jump barrier. Her time is considered to be one of the nation's best this season.

In the Men's Javelin throw, Matthew Maloney of LaSalle Academy RI smashed one of the meet's oldest records (214-06, Sagnella, 91) and established himself as the nation's best with a throw of 231-05.

The Men's 1-mile run was equal to its star billing as senior Chris Barnicle of Newton North led the talented group to the wire, winning in 4:11.10, just ahead of Ben White of Liverpool NY in 4:11.50.

In the Women's 1-mile run, Amie Schumacher of Holy Cross-Waterbury CT, led from start to finish to win (5:05.53) in her first major test since coming off the injury list from the indoor season.

In the Men's 800m, Bryan Scotland of St. Benedict's Prep NJ edged Rob Novak of Bordentown Regional NJ at the tape to win in 1:51.66 to 1:51.72. Stein of Waylen and Williams of St. Peters also ran under 1:55.

The meet's only three-individual event winner was Myles Bradley of Norwich Free Academy as he strung together wins in the 110m Hurdles (14.22), the Long Jump (24-1) and the Triple Jump (48-9.75) to win the Men's Most Valuable Performer of the meet.

The Women's Most Valuable Performer trophy was awarded to junior Samantha Gawrych of Westerly RI who ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x800m relay (9:15.60) with a 2:06 split, winning the 400meter dash in 56.39 and then coming back to win by a step over Kate Backel of Conard-West Hartford as the anchor leg of the 4x400m relay, 3:58.15 to 3:58.67.

In the Women's 1600m Sprint Relay, Bishop Loughlin NY, anchored by the Women's 800m winner Shantile Blackburn, ran away from the field to an impressive win with a 4:06.81 clocking.

Chris Barnicle delivered a memorable 2-mile last year (8:50.82). This year he goes after Jonathan Riley's meet record in the mile (4:09.09). Super soph hammer thrower Walter Henning and the Saratoga NY girls are also on hand.

(May 12, 2005) The 34th Hartford Public High School Outdoor Track and Field meet, slated for Saturday, May 14, 2005 at the Trinity College Track Facility in Hartford Connecticut once again has a number of events stacked with elite high school talent from the Northeast region.

One of the focal points of last year's meet was the Men's 2-mile run which saw junior Chris Barnicle of Newton North smash the meet record with a 8:50.82 clocking and where the top five runners broke the 9-minute barrier. This year, senior Chris Barnicle returns in the Larry C. Amann 1-mile seeded event in hopes of leading eleven other talented distance men to break the eight year record of 4:09.09 set by Olympian Jonathon Riley.

Barnicle will be joined by a virtual who's who of top middle distance and milers looking to grab the victor's watch including Ben White of Liverpool (NSIC Indoor 1-mile runner-up), Bryan Scotland of St. Benedict (NSIC 4th-800m, 7th-1mile), Kevin McDermott of Chaminade, Tom Webb of Bishop Hendricksen (NSIC 8th-1mile), Brian Gagnon of Lowell (NSIC 3rd-800m), Geary Gubbins and Luis German of Southhampton, David Polgar of Newton North, Tradelle Ward of Griswold (CT State Indoor 1st-1600m), Mark Amirault of Xaverian Brothers and John Schroeder of Nashua North (HPHS04-3rd-1mile).

The easier race for Bryan Scotland of St. Benedict may be the Men's 800meter run where he will duel with top seed Rob Novak of Bordentown Regional; both have run sub 1:53 efforts for the two lap race.

In the sprint events, the 100m dash will showcase Andrew Pratt of Lyman Memorial and Mark Tatham of DeWitt Clinton. In the 200m dash you can take your pick of favorites in the late-in-the-day race as there are several sprinters entered under 22 seconds, led by Fransico Santos of Herbert Lehman and Michael Wright of Uniondale. The 400m dash features Jemel Williams of DeWitt Clinton and Alie Beauvais of Hempstead, both seeded under 49 seconds. The 110m hurdles will feature CT and New England Indoor Champion Myles Bradley of Norwich Free Academy. Myles is also the top seeded athlete the Long Jump and Triple Jump. In other field events, Walter Henning of St. Anthony's is the top Hammer Thrower entered with a 224'-8.5 throw to his credit. In the Men's Shot Put, Mike Trappen of Mt Sinai will be challenged by Chris Bo of Somerville; both are 55-foot plus throwers. The Men's Javelin features a 200'-plus thrower in Mathew Maloney of LaSalle Academy. The Men's Pole Vault, Nick David (Mt. Sinai), Jordan Thull (East Lyme) and Chris Martens (Branford) will face off above 14-feet. In the 4x800meter relay, Manchester leads an all Connecticut race for first against Shelton, Fitch and Xavier.

The Women's side of the meet doesn't lack for talent either especially in the distance events as Saratoga Springs once again brings a talented team led by Lindsey Ferguson. Lindsey brings her 6:52 seed time to the inaugural 2000 meter Steeplechase event and will compete against five other runners seeded better than 8-minutes. The Women's 800 meter run is another race where the top talent will be showcased in the 2-lap event with Jenean Morris and Shantile Blackburn of Bishop Loughlin competing against Jilian Gundling of Farmington and Ferguson of Saratoga Springs. The Women's 4x800m returns last year's top record-setting team, Saratoga Springs as well as a talented quartet from Westerly, both seeded under 9:30. The Women's 1-Mile seeded race could turn out to be an all-Connecticut event as six of the top nine runners are led by top seed Keri Lyons of Wilton. The Women's 2-mile should be a competitive event as the top three seeds, Karyn Delay (Saratoga Springs), Kristin Mitchell (Glastonbury) and Emma Perron (Conard) are all seeded under 11:10 for the 8-lap plus event.

In the sprint events, Monique Hodges of Wethersfield will be challenged by Fallon Wilks of Hempstead. The top 200m sprinter is Sabrina Budai of Hempstead with a 24.31 seed time. The 400m dash should be exciting as the top six are all seeded under 58 seconds with Jeavon Benjamin of Hempstead leading the pack.

The 100m Hurdles may end up to be a race between Connecticut rivals Natasha Harvey of Career and Nora Miller of Middletown. In the field events, Harvey of Career leads all flights with a 19'-8" seed mark followed by King Arantxa of Medford.

The Triple Jump will feature Racquel Anderson of Hempstead with a 39-foot seed mark while the Shot Put has Tynisha McMillian of Stamford as the top seed at 42' plus. The Women's Pole Vault should see a competitive chase for the win as Kaitlyn Fitzgerald of Mt Sinai (2004 HPHS Champion) and Tara Oberg of Hunterdon Central are both seeded over 11-feet. The Women's Hammer Throw will feature Molly Hawksley of East Providence who has thrown over 150-feet.
