Sprints Report

West Catholic girls repeat, erase 3 records.
Simon Gratz delivers. PTFCA Indoor sprints report.
As West Catholic coach Lenny Jordon often says, 'it was just a day at the office.' If that's the case, then it was a very profitable day, with their 2nd consecutive state indoor title and three state meet records. But they were pushed most of the way. Not surprisingly, Nicole Leach was involved in all three records. The first record was the 400, where she ran 53.82 to eclipse the 54.16 record of Harrisburg's Dominique Darden. Leach didn't get the record in the 200, but she and Krista Simkins of Wissahickon and Clarenchell Tate of Simon Gratz posted the #3, #4 and #5 times in the country this season, running 24.17, 24.23 and 24.26, respectively. Leach led off the 4x200, which ran 1:40.23, erasing the 1:41.09 record set by William Pen n in 2000. And Leach anchored the 4x400 to a record 3:49.82, eclipsing the 3:51.40 also set by William Penn in 2000. Tate was also busy in the 60. She ran the fastest time of the day, a 7.53, but it was in the Semis. In the Finals, she was just .05 slower, but it was enough for Great Valley senior Janessa Murphy to capture her first state title, going 7.57, US#7. In the 60 Hurdles, Valley's Mycaiah Clemons (left) got a state record and beat Plymouth Whitemarsh senior Chanel Williams, 8.65-8.71. The mark beat her own record by .02. The difference in the final was Clemons was clean through the entire race, often the difference is the event. Clemons is now US#3, with Williams at US#5. In the boys sprints, Simon Gratz had a target on their backs, thanks to three nation leading relay times early in the season - two of which still stand. They didn't catch themselves in either the 4x200 or 4x400, but neither did anyone else. Those 20 points went a long way toward the 47 they acquired on the way to the team title. Gratz led wire-to-wire in the 4x200, finishing at 1:29.52. In the 4x400, anchor Khaliff Featherstone was caught and passed by the Downingtown East anchor at the 250m mark of his leg, but within 50 meters heading into the final wide turn, Featherstone had taken control and pulled away to cross the line at 3:24.89. Earlier in the day, Featherstone had used a similar tactic in the 400, but this time he was the pursuer of Max Westman of Lower Merion, Featherstone won in a US#10 48.98, with Westman taking 3rd in 49.73 after begin caught by Bensalem's Reggie Carter, who went 49.61. The 200 was smokin' as well, with Central Dauphin's Jordan Mitchell beating both Featherstone, 3rd in 22.15, and Khaliff's teammate, Kenneth Talley, 2nd in 22.11. Mitchell posted a 22.06, which is #9 in the US. In the 60 Hurdles, Carrington Queen had tasted a loss several weeks ago at Lehigh, and he left nothing to chance at the big meet. His 8.11-8.08 and 7.99 trifecta was impressive, and left him at US#4 along with a state championship. As expected, West Mifflin's Montel Williamson had challenges from both teammate Brandon Coleman, and Conwell Egan's Steve Slaton. Williamson and Slaton both ran 6.93 in the finals, with the Titan getting the win. Coleman was 3rd in 7.07. Distance Report Walker breaks Coval mark -- Miscount in the Mile -- US Top 5 4x800's. PTFCA distance report. The boys' mile will be talked about years from now. But it shouldn't overshadow performances that rank well in PA history, as well as nationally this season. Jacob Walker (left with Curtis Bixler), a slight, but powerful junior from Ellwood City, has been on the radar for two years now. He ran a 9:16.41 3200 at PIAA states last spring, and for all intents and purposes, beat that with his record-breaking 8:36.83 indoor 3000, taking the six-year old STATE record from none other than Foot Locker finalist and multi-state champ Danny Coval of Council Rock (wasn't North and South, then). Saying it was "pretty much the perfect race," Walker has PRed the last three times he has run 3000, going from 8:49 at the end of January, to an 8:44 last week, to his record at States. Running a very even pace, Walker split 4:38 for the mile, and was accompanied only by Cumberland Valley junior Curtis Bixler, who had run a big PR of 8:51 two weeks earlier. Walker's strategy was to keep picking it up, but it took awhile to work. "I heard Curtis behind me the whole way, and I just kept trying to pick it up to get rid of him, and he gave me a good push." Walker hopes to race at the Penn Relays, and has set a goal of breaking 9 minutes for two miles this coming season. In the girls 3000, Lynn Morelli, who a week before had run 4:59.59 on the same track, picked up where she left off, and pushed the pace from the beginning, leading comfortably to a 10:04.41 win, and US#6. Lauretta Dezubay of Freedom, who had won the Mile in 5:03.81 earlier in the meet, showed great preparation by finishing 2nd in 10:16.56. Ten girls broke 10:43 in the deep field. Following Dezubay across the line in the mile was Strath Haven's Lisa Vienneau in 5:08.53, and then Conestoga's Liz Costello in 5:09.99 in only her third mile ever. The 'faux' finish at 1400 meters after the bell
lap was rung a lap too early.
The boys mile was bizarre, at best. It's a zoo near the finish of any race, but the key to any distance event at 800 or above is to know where you are in laps. It's easy to lose count on a 200 meter track, but it's also critical not to. The trouble started when the stadium scoreboard showed two laps to go just as the runners started their 6th of eight laps. When they passed the finish line, the bell was rung to signal one lap remaining. Reacting to the audio cue, a few of the racers started to position themselves for the final push. North Penn's Sean Doyle had been leading for a few laps, and with about 100 meters to go before 1400 meters, Central's Thurmon Sanders passed him, soon to be joined by Cedar Cliff's Tim Johnson. Doyle responded briefly, but realizing it was the next to last lap, kept his head and watched the race unfold. Sanders and Johnson sprinted to the line, believing they were done, but officials and fans alike were yelling to the runners that one lap remained. (the clock was at about 3:49 when the two crossed the line). Doyle and Springfield Montco's Matt Gillen were the only two runners who kept racing. When the others realized the error, they rejoined the race and pushed to the finish. Doyle crossed the line in 4:25.15, with Archbishop Carroll's John Savoy recovering for 2nd in 4:26.42. A few scattered boos showered the infield as fans and athletes realized what had occurred. A meeting of the appeals committee ruled that the results of the Mile would stand as reported, pending an appeal. The appeal came with only a few minutes before the results would have been declared official. When appealing, the coach making the request The real finish at a Mile, (below left) - and the re-mile (below right) after the final meet event, in which Kyle Murray and Greg Thomas improved their times, with Murray taking the last medal at 8th. must also offer a remedy. The solution of the appeals committee was to offer a re-race at the conclusion the last event of the day, with those times being integrated into the earlier race
results, no matter where they placed the runners. Kyle Murray of Central Bucks South and
Greg Thomas of Cardinal O'Hara were the only two takers, and paced each other to a 4:30.24 and 4:30.37, giving them 8th and 9th respectively. Both times were faster than the two
had run in the original race. Nice counting Sean! The 800's went entirely to script. State record holder Latavia Thomas raced with the final 200 in mind, knowing she could pull away from anyone in the race. But that didn't stop Hatboro-Horsham senior Caitlin Klaas from pushing the race. She would finish 2nd in 2:15.04, just over three seconds behind Thomas, who improved her US#4 time to 2:12.00. In the boys' race, the strongest four-lapper and top seed was Justin McCarthy of Central Dauphin. He paced himself before unleashing his final drive to a 1:55.48 win. Thirteen guys broke two minutes in another display of PA's depth. The girls 4x800 featured the defending champ Hatboro-Horsham. They had a nice streak going with the 2003 outdoor and 2004 indoor 4x800 championships, until illness and a talented Haverford Township team broke the run at outdoor states last year. So focused was a word that came to mind as this team looked to regain what they have to believe is their race. Both Engineering & Science and Gwynedd Mercy Academy had plans of their own, and after three legs, were heading for a final showdown. But Hatboro anchor Klaas was close... and close for her is too close for comfort for most other teams. She steadily pulled even with the leaders as they reached 400 meters and then put the race away to finish in 9:19.91. Gwyedd was 2nd in 9:24.49. Upper Saint Clair, racing in the 'slow' heat, took 3rd in 9:30.09, while Engineering & Science was 4th in 9:31.33. Hatboro's time is a US#5. In the boys' 4x800, North "800 Academy" Penn was on a mission. Bonner had broken their streak of five straight PA Indoor championships. North Penn also holds the event state record of 7:52.05, set in 2002. And they ran like they own the event, racing to a 7:57.20 US#5 time. Only Germantown Academy was in the race late, and they finished at 8:01.30. So if you're counting, that's six of the last eight to North Penn. Here are the North Penn 4x800 performances since 1998: 2005 1st 7:57.20 2004 Bonner 7:58.27 (11th 8:10.96) 2003 Bonner 8:03.18 (5th 8:07.91) 2002 1st 7:52.05 Meet Record/State Record 2001 1st 7:52.42 2000 1st 7:55.61 - first at Penn State 1999 1st 4x880 8:03.35 @ Lehigh 1998 1st 4x880 7:56.54 @ Lehigh

Field Report

Awesome throws. Memorable head-to-head by Smith-Hannon,
Cave-Fritz. PTFCA Indoor field report.

It's an unreal year for the Shot Put in PA. Ryan Whiting hasn't had a
meet with a throw under 65 feet all season. No one else in the US has
thrown that far even once. We'll let that sink in a minute by telling
you that Whiting says he isn't done yet. He has one more chance to reach
the 70' level indoor at the Nike Team Nationals in two weeks. His
68-11.25 throw to raise his PA Indoor Record made him believe even more
that he just needs that one throw where it all clicks to hit his goal.
"I need to get it high, instead of just straight out."
The girls' Shot Put features a freshman who seems to have all the tools to put on some special displays over the next three years. Karen Shump (left) was at the top of the early in the season, and midway through the season, hit her for 40' throw. "I wasn't using my legs, and we really tried to work on that by doing more drills. And it just came together today." Together meaning a state-leading, US#3 45-04.75.
Her first round started a little rough, throwing one into the screen. "It wasn't nerves, I was just pulling by block too hard." Shump says her coaches kept her calm and helped her adjust a few things, and the rest took care of itself. Shump wasn't actually leading heading into the finals. That was Cedar Crest's Becky Eisenhauer. The two traded the lead through the first two rounds of the finals, until Shump unleashed her big throw. "I knew it was out there. I just didn't know how far. Me and Becky were throwing really well." Eisenhauer believed the competition against Shump for the second time this year was beneficial, as well. She threw a PR over 42' in the trials, and that helped to take off a little stress. "...then I just went after it." As for facing Shump during the rest of the year - "It's gonna make the year fun." And sisters Tayvon and Kaleena Gray competed to a dead heat as far as distance, with both throwing 40-00.50. Frosh Kaleena took 3rd , the senior Tayvon 4th. It was Kaleena's first throw over 40, while Tayvon owns the family PR of 42-07.50 set at the 2005 Nike Indoor meet.

Three events can be described in the names of two athletes - Smith and Hannon. Nicole Smith (left), the Mcdowell senior, wanted to sweep the three field events over her junior competitor, Erin Hannon of Bradford. She did, but not before Hannon pushed her with a PR of her own in the High Jump at 5-10. The two each cleared that height, and Smith even got a good look on her 3rd and final shot at 5-11, winning the event on misses. In the Long Jump, Smith went 19-01, just .75 off her PR. Hannon PRed by two inches, taking 2nd with a leap of 18-03.25. But it was the Triple Jump in which Smith 'popped a really big one', at 39-07.50. Smith needed every bit of the PR, because Hannon was just behind her at 39-06.00. For Hannon, it was her 3rd PR of the meet. Smith says a sprained ankle early in the season allowed Hannon to beat her at an early season Triple Jump. "I just remember that feeling of her sneaking by me, so it was kinda like a stab in the heart." Smith says she was totally focused on the state indoor meet and what it meant to her. "I'll never see this place again, and I just really, really wanted to do well." She has college visits planned at Arkansas and NC State, as well as others, and plans to sign in April, before competing at the Penn Relays, where she'll probably see Hannon again. "She does motivate me to do better, but I am outta here (Indoor states). She can have the spotlight." Smith's day was even busier than the three field events. She also PRed in the 60 Hurdles, running 8.99 in the Semis, and eventually taking 3rd. Hannon didn't advance from the Semis, and ran a 9.44, off her 9.31 season best. In the Pole Vault, three girls bettered the state record height of 12-06 set by Lindsey Regan in 2004. Regan actually would keep the record, re-establishing it at 13-00. Butler's Kendall Butch was 2nd on misses over Latrobe's Caitlin Hewitt, both at 12-07. For the story on the confusing and controversial end to the Pole Vault, read the story... Following official review, Lindsey Regan's new Indoor State Pole Vault Record really is 13-00.

In the High Jump, both Juan Cave, St. Joseph's Prep, and Ryan Fritz, Octorara, closed in on and broke the Meet Record, bettering t he mark by 1/4-inch, each clearing 6-10.50. But it was 7' and better that they wanted. Cave had the best look, but clipped the bar with his heel on the way to the mat. In the Pole Vault, both Eric Sparks, Hickory, an d Ron Walters of Baldwin cleared 15-06, with Sparks taking his 2nd state championship (outdoor 2004) on misses. Glen Mills' Wendell Simpkins was the champ in the Long Jump, clearing 22-07. And Barry Church of Penn Hills won the Triple Jump over Simkins by just 1/4-inch, going 46-06.50.

68-11.25!

Sprints

Carrington Queen, Chichester, may have gotten a wake-up call when he was
caught at the line in the 60 Hurdles at the PTFCA Track
Carnival by Dallastown's David Hoffman. Queen has the season's best time
time of 8.14. Kamal Marell of Penn Charter should be in the mix of the
finals as well. Queen was 2nd in 2004.

In the 60 dash, West Mifflin's Montel Williamson is ranked in the
top five of the country, and is the only PA runner under 7 seconds for
the distance. He was 2nd in 2004. He's been pushed all season by
teammate Brandon Coleman. Others who have the best shot to make the
finals are Steve Slaton, Conwell-Egan, Cardel Johnson of West Allegheny,
Trey Womack, Malvern Prep, Andre Nelson of Springfield Delco, and
Central Dauphin's Jordan Mitchell.

Mitchell has the best 200 by a PA boy this season, and he meets
Williamson early in the 200 semis. Also in that heat are the athletes
with the other top times of the season, Bensalem's Reggie Carter,
Penncrest's Andrew McCloskey, and Cheltenham's Zachary Shands. Coleman
and Simon Gratz's Khaliff Featherstone race each other in another semi.

No one has cracked 50 seconds yet this season in the 400. A few
will on Saturday. The hot heat includes Andrew Burton of William
Tennent, Eddie Kiser, Red Lion, Justin Babich, Southern Lehigh, Max
Westman, Lower Merion, Featherstone, and Cumberland Valley's David
Stonfer.

Distance

There's a reason that Justin McCarthy of Central Dauphin, and Central
(Phil)'s Thurman Sanders are the top two seeds in the 800.
Unusually for PA, they are the only two under 2 minutes. McCarthy put
some distance between himself and Sanders with a 1:57.02 last Saturday
on the Penn State track. But this is so close, any of the other six in
the hot heat could have the race they need.

The Mile is wide open this year. The three fastest milers of the
season are all racing in the 3000. That leaves ten runners within one to
three seconds of each other. Fastest of that group are Cedar Cliff's Tim
Johnson, and Cardinal O'Hara's Greg Thomas. As you should know by now,
Manheim Township's Craig Miller is a swimmer during the winter. You saw
what he did last spring, so...

The 3000 is the deepest field of the Distance races. Four guys
are under 9 minutes. Max Brown of North Allegheny and Jacob Walker of
Ellwood City have been trading wins in western PA this season. But
Walker, who owns a 9:12 3200 from last spring, separated himself from
the pack with a 8:44.23 at the TSTCA Champs 2/19. Curtis Bixler of
Cumberland Valley is under 8:52, and Sam Luff, Emmaus, is experienced
and has the talent to beat any of this group. He has a 9:10 3200 and
4:16 1600. But Bixler and Walker have the two best miles of this season.
Waiting for someone to make a mistake will be East Stroudsburg's Brian
Cullin, Unionville's Colin Leak, and Coatesville's Amin Garnett. Not
competing is AA state XC Champ and Foot Locker Finalist Jeff Weiss of
McGuffey. He ran one 3200 earlier this season, going 9:34.6 by himself.
Conservatively, that would be an 8:58 3000.

Relays

In the 4x200, Simon Gratz still has the #1 time in the country,
1:27.96. No team in PA is within five seconds. But that's why they run
the races. Anything can happen. But if these four guys get the stick
around cleanly, they should win easily.

The same also goes for the 4x400, as Gratz had the #1 time in the
US of 3:20.14. Newburgh Academy NY erased that, but they're still #2.
And in PA, no one is within seven seconds. Taking into account that not
every team has had the advantage of racing on a banked track, these time
differentials are still daunting. Clean passes, no lane violations, and
Gratz is two-for-two.

In the 4x800, the winner most likely will come from one of the
first five seeds, Archbishop Carroll, Springfield Montco, Germantown
Academy, North Penn, and Great Valley. Don't count out Council Rock
North. But individual events can take just enough out of the legs to
cause a slow split or two. It'll be a tight race.

Field

The High Jump has the makings of a classic. It's been a few years
since PA has had a 7-foot high jumper, and this year, we have a great
one in Ryan Fritz of Octorara. But he'll have competition up there in
that rare air, as Juan Cave of St. Joseph's Prep - the defending champ -
has cleared 6-10 a few times, and seems ready to hit that landmark mark.
A lot will depend upon misses and how early or late these two enter the
competition.

Hickory's Eric Sparks won the outdoor Pole Vault, and has cleared
15-06 this season. But Sean Gil of North Allegheny is over at 15-01, a
PR he achieved at last week's TSTCA Champs. Also in that vicinity is
Baldwin's Ron Walters. A good day at the office, and it's Sparks' to
win.

Only seven inches separate the season bests of the athletes in the
Long Jump. At this level of competition, it'll take someone
popping a 23-plus to separate themselves from the field.

Clarence Smith of Coatesville has been looking great in the Triple
Jump. He is the only PA athlete over 46 feet (46-07.75), but he'll
be facing stiff competition from the AAA outdoor state champ in Darnell
Johnson of Gettysburg, who went 45-11 in only his second meet of the
season at Albright College on the 13th. Johnson, however, has gone
47-11, and if he's on form, it'll be a great competition.

What more can you say about Ryan Whiting of Central Dauphin in the
Shot Put? As he said himself, he's competing against the numbers
now. And the first big one is the 70-foot barrier. There is another
thrower over 60' in Rob Rankin of Upper Saint Clair. But 69-08.50 is
another zip code. And Whiting has five more throws over 65-04 this
season. Stand back and enjoy this one.

Sprints

You'll want to make sure you're paying attention for the 60 Hurdles
finals. While there's a lot of talent in the prelim races, the
final should come down to four girls. Only one athlete is under 9
seconds for the race this season, and that's senior Chanel Williams of
Plymouth-Whitemarsh. Her 8.95 is just .05 better than the 2nd seed, Nia
Ali of West Catholic. The other top contenders come from western PA, and
both know how to win. Mycaiah Clemons of Valley has a 9.04 on the books,
while Nicole Smith of McDowell has run a 9.11 Smith is also competing in
three field events at this meet. Of note: Clemons ran four times under 9
seconds at this distance in 2004, with a best of 8.67. This race will be
fun. Clemons is the defending champ.

The race for the 60 Dash championship should feature Janessa
Murphy, Great Valley, Clarenchell Tate, Simon Gratz, Tierra Flowers,
Coatesville, Breehana Jacobs of Laurel Highlands and Jessica Forrest of
Reading. Others in the mix could be Saquenda Dallas, Girls High, and
Jewel Daye of Central, Philadelphia. Murphy was 2nd in 2004.

Tate will need all her energy for the hot heat of the 200 , as
she will be facing Nicole Leach of West Catholic, and Krista Simkins of
Wissahickon, who has been improving the last month. Also in that race
are Dallas, and frosh Ryann Krais of Methacton. Tate is the top seed
coming into the race. Leach won in 2004.

When you're racing against the #2 all-time prep 400 runner, an
defending champ, you're probably in a race for 2nd. Anything can happen,
but Nicole Leach's greatest challenger, Krista Simkins, will need the
perfect race, from start... to finish. Third seed Ryann Krais will get
some more great experience in this race, probably continuing to lower
her PR once again.

Distance

Only one girl in the hot heat of the 800 didn't break 2:20. There
is a good chance she will in this race. Led by West Catholic's Latavia
Thomas at 2:12.73, there's over a four second drop to the next seed. But
Thomas is #2 in the US, and this is her best race. And 2:12 isn't her
fastest. She holds the PA indoor record of 2:08.47 set at this meet just
a year ago.

There is only one athlete under five minutes in the Mile this
season, and she is the top seed in the 3000. So that opens this race to
the person with the best race on Saturday. It should come down to
Lauretta Dezubay, Freedom, Gwynedd Mercy's Kate Vernon, Strath Haven's
Lisa Vienneau, Upper Perkiomen's Kristen Reed, or Conestoga's Liz
Costello.

That 4:59.59 miler, Lynn Morelli of St. Basil, has also gone 10:17.84
for the 3000. Dezubay will be doubling, but her 10:18.53 puts her
in the mix. Also looking strong in recent weeks have been Lauren Bowles
of Upper Dublin and West Chester East's Alycia Woodruff. State AAA Cross
Country champion Katie Thaeder of Unionville is also in the race, and if
she's closing on near peak condition, she should challenge for the win
as well.

Relays

The 4x200 is the first of two relays that will most likely go to
West Catholic. Penn Hills has run within three seconds of the Burr's
1:42.72 on a flat track, while Simon Gratz knows the competition they
face and what they have to do to challenge for the win. West Chester
Henderson and Norristown will have their hands full, but will give it
everything they have. Both will be mentally prepared.

The 4x400 is a virtual lock for West Catholic. 3:48.57, banked or
not banked, is still fast. Oh, and it is the #1 time in the country.
When faced with the Burrs at the DVGTCA Meet of Champs, Engineering &
Science was in the race for awhile. This time though, West Catholic adds
Nicole Leach to the line-up.

Hatboro-Horsham isn't doing a lot of individual races, and senior
Caitlin Klaas is veteran enough to know how to race an open 800 and
anchor her squad's 4x800. Long way of saying it looks like
Hatboro isn't messing around with this race. They are defending champs,
and want to erase the memory of their outdoor race where they were hit
with illness. They saw one of their challengers at the DVGTCA Meet of
Champs in Engineering & Science, and now know what they have to do.
North Penn, St. Basil and Villa Maria will also be near the front.

Field

Nicole Smith of McDowell is tied for US#1 in the High Jump after
her PR of 5-10.50. She and her main rival, Bradford junior Erin Hannon,
have seen each other a lot this season. Both are doing four events, the
same four events. This is one of two in which they are the top seeds.
Hannon has cleared 5-08. It'll take every bit of that and maybe a bit
more to beat Smith. Smith won last year with a jump of 5-07.

Lindsey Regan of Easton didn't start training for indoor until later
than usual, but she's catching up fast. She is the defending indoor
champ in the Pole Vault, and has cleared 12-06. Latrobe junior
Caitlin Hewitt has cleared 12-00, and should be there in the final few
jumps.

In the Long Jump, five girls have marks better than what won
indoor states in 2004. Nicole Smith set a PR of 19-01.75 recently, and
is now tied for US#5. She could be pushed aside by big PRs from
Brehanna Jacobs of Laurel Highlands, who has gone 18-07.50, Janessa
Murphy of Great Valley, 18-06.75, Erin Hannon at 18-01.25 or that frosh
you'll be hearing a lot about in coming years, Ryann Krais, at 18.00.25.

Just as in the Long Jump, the top two seeds in the Triple Jump
have gone substantially further than the 2004 champs. And once again,
the top two seeds are Smith and Hannon. Smith has a PR this season of
39-07.50, while Hannon is within 8.5 inches at 38-11.

If you like seeing stars of the future who are stars today, you've been
waiting for Penncrest's Karen Shump in the Shot Put. Her 43-01.50
is one of her five throws this season of over 40', which include that
last three meets. Cedar Crest's Becky Eisenhauer (41-09.50),
Harrisburg's Brianna Flagg (40-07.50), and Baldwin's Jordan Veney
(40-07), are in the neighborhood should the opportunity to win, arise.
Defending champ Tayvon Gray of Coatesville is also in the top flights,
as is her talented frosh sister, Kaleenna.
