Northeast's big 3 boys powerhouses
polish their briefs for top ranking arguments;
US#1 Saratoga NY girls overpower Great American

Northeast Region Editor

  • Boys
  • NE#1 Fayetteville-Manlius NY makes statement with 15:20 3.0 average on slippery McQuaid NY Inv course
  • NE#2 Cedar Cliff PA wins a big one in ROC at Great American
  • NE#3 CBA runs 14th fastest all-time average of 16:34 at hilly Holmdel NJ

As McQuaid NY Inv. meet director Ed Glavin told Dyestat, NE#1 Fayetteville-Manlius NY came as advertised, delivering an 'impressive romp' over NE#6 Lockport NY. With 19 points and a 53 point edge, they are the real deal. Just as impressive as the margin of victory has to be the record 15:20 average on the 3-mile course in Rochester NY. In the rain!

The pressure was on at Great American and the team from PA delivered, despite a #1 runner who was a bit under the weather. Pat Caulfield went out hard and held on for a 14th place, posting a 16:01 to lead NE#2 Cedar Cliff PA to a big ROC win at Great American. NE#5 Toms River North NJ finished 11th in the ROC.

NE#9 Cherokee is running pretty well without two of their top seven. All they did in the Boys Invitational race at Great American was to win with a 16:42 average, one of the top ten of the day. In the same race, NE#7 Monsignor Farrell NY finished in 4th behind RS McLaughlin of Canada, and just ahead of previously ranked Warwick Valley NY.

NE#3 Christian Brothers Academy NJ - running a 16:34 average on the tough Holmdel NJ course - the 14th fastest average of all-time - accomplished a team first, getting five guys under 17 on the states course. Oh, and they won, handily defeating Old Bridge NJ 33-87 at the Shore Coaches NJ Invitational. Unranked Morris Hills NJ averaged 16:48 in the boys D race.

NE#4 Council Rock North PA really missed their regular #3 this week, as Steel City PA Invitational hosts Coatesville used a tight 45-second pack to win by eight, 113-121. Rock's first two took care of business, with John Mahoney winning in 16:20, and Brandon Pomerantz 6th in 16:44.

NE#8 Shenendehowa NY won the Everett T. Grout Memorial at Central Park in Schenectady NY with 32 points and a 14:12 average on the 2.75 mile layout.

NE#10 Bishop Hendricken RI expected more from the new Ukrops XC Festival in Richmond VA, but the only challenge came from 2nd place Herndon VA, which was 25 points behind their 43 points.

  • Girls
  • Saratoga Springs NY. 18:04 average. 26 points. Best all-time?
  • NE#2 Bay Shore NY sets team average record at McQuaid NY at 18:01 for 3.0
  • NE#3 Bethlehem NY had the pleasure of racing Saratoga Springs. They took 2nd in the ROC, albeit more than 100 points behind.

Is Saratoga Springs NY the best of all time? That question is pondered, and comparisons drawn in Dyestat's report on the Race of Champions at Great American. Suffice it to say that five scorers in the top 14 with an 18:04 average on a tough course, makes a pretty good case. And they weren't running against weak teams. NE#3 Bethlehem NY, who has the 'pleasure' of competing in the same league as Saratoga, finished 2nd, 128 points behind Saratoga's 26 with a team average of 19:32. NE#7 Monsignor Donovan NJ was back in 7th place. Formerly ranked Saint Basil PA finished a strong 5th, bouncing back from a disappointing 7th the previous week at Carlisle PA. And previously ranked Warwick Valley NY was 9th.

Also at Great American, formerly ranked Columbia NY won the Invitational Girls race at Great American with a 20:04 average, #10 on the day, but the combined results from the meet put them at #7, ahead of Cedar Cliff PA and Monsignor Donovan NJ from the ROC.

NE#2 Bay Shore NY traveled to Rochester NY to challenge the 3.0 mile McQuaid Invitational layout, and came away with a team average meet record of 18:01. They tallied just 44 points for the win in the Seeded Varsity Large Schools race.

NE#4 Champlain Valley VT, fresh off a one-point win at the Manchester NH Invitational, mopped up at the Thetford VT Invitational with 64 points. The second place team was over 200. Five scorers averaged 20:25 on the hilly layout.

NE#5 Manchester Central NH took off 10/2, and will race on 10/9 at Wykham Park Ct, site of New Englands.

NE#6 Hanover NH won the Black Bear Invitational in Northwood NH by 28 over Bow.

NE#8 Concord-Carlisle MA defeated previously ranked Amherst MA at the McIntyre Bay State Invitational in Franklin Park, Boston, tallying 107 for a seven-point win, thanks to a 1:07 spread. NE

#9 Parkland PA overcame the apparent PA-ranking jinx to win their first week after joining the top Northeast teams, winning the Steel City PA Invitational by 22 over an improving Chambersburg PA squad. Previously ranked Gwynedd Mercy PA ran a strong 3rd, another 22 points back.

NE#10 Unionville PA took off both 9/25 and 10/2 in preparation for the upcoming Eastern States race in New York. Team #1 Katie Thaeder finished 27th in the Race of Champions at Great American in 18:57. And unranked Roxbury Township NJ won the Girls B race at Shore Coaches NJ with a team average of 19:54.

Next up: a delicious showdown at Manhattan Invitational in New York Saturday 10/9 between Fayetteville-Manlius and CBA. Under Manhattan's usual practice, the boys power would have divided among separate heats, as Manhattan tries to achieve eight balanced heats. But this year, Manhattan officials agreed to put the teams in the same heat to permit a face to face matchup that will be highly anticipated. The powerful trio rank 5th, 10th and 13th in Marc Bloom's latest Super 25 national rankings in The Harrier, and events of last week and this will probably boost them even higher.

Quote of the week:

"The girls were so pumped. They felt good about being there and taking on bigger challenges."
- NE#7 Monsignor Donovan NJ coach Joe Gomulka after returning home from NC.

Boys

1. Fayetteville-Manlius NY -
6. Lockport NY -

With 19 points and a 53 point edge on NE#6 Lockport NY at the McQuaid Inv under their belts, Fayetteville-Manlius has established themselves as entirely worthy of their NE#1 ranking. Just as impressive as the margin of victory over a ranked team has to be the record 15:20 average on the 3-mile course in Rochester NY. FM coach Bill Aris was pleased with the 15-second spread from a front-running 15:12 to a 5th man at 15:27. Want to be more impressed? The day started as clear and windless. By the time FM raced, it was raining, windy and cooler.
Lockport coach Bob Eberhardt said his team didn't run badly, just 'not great.' He also praised FM for their great race. He's optimistic because his 5th man competed in his first full race of the year.

Great American Cross Country Festival, Cary NC

The pressure was on and the team from PA delivered, despite a #1 runner who was a bit under the weather. Pat Caulfield went out hard and held on for a 14th place, posted a 16:01 to lead the Colts to a big ROC win at Great American. They keyed off US#6 Mountain View UT at the start of the race, but it became quickly apparent that JR Tucker VA was placing four runner very well. Their 5th ended up 67 scoring places behind the Cedar Cliff 5th, and Cedar Cliff had a 149-173 edge. Mountain View took 3rd, with NE#4 Toms River North NJ finishing way back in 11th.

4. Council Rock North PA

- This time #3 man Keith Capecci was really missed by Council Rock North. They survived at their home invitational the week before, but when you're running against the pride of defending home turf, and the tradition that a former state championship team brings, Coatesville was the most likely challenger to Rock. The Steel City Invitational is a true test of all skills. It's a fast first mile, followed by a winding, L O N G hill, and then downhill road and never-ending flat grass finish. Rock's first two took care of business, with John Mahoney winning in 16:20, and Brandon Pomerantz 6th in 16:44.
But Coatesville got five in before Rock's 5th, who finished in 74th.
The final difference was just eight. How much does Council Rock miss Capecci? He's normally just 10-15 seconds behind Mahoney. The Rock #6 who had been out since September 8th, returned and will be improving.
Capecci is staying fit, so coach Dave Marrington is optimistic about his team's chances in the coming month.

7. Monsignor Farrell NY -
9. Cherokee NJ -

Great American Cross Country Festival, Cary NC

Cherokee is running pretty well without two of their top seven. All they did in the Boys Invitational race at Great American was to win with a 16:42 average, one of the top ten of the day. Led by the 8th place finish of senior Tom Yersak in 16:18, Cherokee was a 35-point winner over unranked LaSalle OH. NE#7 Monsignor Farrell NY finished in 4th behind RS McLaughlin of Canada, and just ahead of previously ranked Warwick Valley NY. Farrell coach Tom Cuffe said that the battle over the final mile was a great one to watch. They were separated by just nine points from LaSalle.

10 Bishop Hendricken RI

- On paper and in descriptions, the new Ukrops XC Festival in Richmond VA looked like a competitive race. But as it turned out, the closest competition came from Herndon VA, which was 25 points behind their 43 points. For good measure, the Rhode Island team also took the B race by two over Benedictine. The course was a very difficult grass layout with some sideways lies and was estimated to be
2.9 miles (generously).

Is Saratoga Springs NY the best of all time? That question is pondered, and comparisons drawn in Dyestat's report on the Race of Champions at Great American.
(http://www.dyestat.com/3us/4xc/GreatAmerican/r-rocgirls.htm). Monsignor Donovan coach Joe Gomulka drove his team to and from the meet. Because they couldn't run before leaving, they ran when they returned home, finishing the distance run together for the first time.
"The girls were so pumped. They felt good about being there and taking on bigger challenges."

– Fresh off their one-point win at the Manchester NH Invitational, and we assume, with a repaired bus to get them to the meet on time, Champlain Valley mopped up at the Thetford VT Invitational with 64 points. The second place team was over 200. Five scorers averaged 20:25 on the hilly layout, finishing between 5th and 21st.

8. Concord-Carlisle MA

- Coach Tom Hart said the win 'wasn't pretty,'
but that he'll take it. Once again it was previously ranked Amherst MA providing the closed competition at the McIntyre Bay State Invitational in Franklin Park, Boston. His girls were excited about joining the rankings, but a key runner had sprained an ankle, another was sick and another was diagnosed with mono. But survive they did with a 107-114 win, thanks to a 1:07 spread.

9. Parkland PA

- Parkland overcame the apparent PA-ranking jinx to win their first week after joining the top Northeast teams. Parkland coach Loretta Dodson asked if it was good news or bad when told last week of their rise, but she and her assistants guided the group through uncharted territory and to a 22 point win at Steel City PA over an improving Chambersburg PA squad. Previously ranked Gwynedd Mercy ran a strong 3rd, another 22 points back.

It's crunch time, as cleats grip the hills and turns of some great courses at some great meets over the next two weeks. For the ranked and wannabe-ranked teams in the Northeast, it's all about the Great American XC Festival in Cary, NC and the McQuaid Invitational in Rochester NY for head-to-head competition. And two formerly ranked teams square off at the St. Anthony's Inv. At GA, for the girls, it's
US#1 Saratoga Springs, NE#3 Bethlehem Central NY, and NE#7 Monsignor Donovan NY and for the boys it's NE#2 Cedar Cliff, NE#4 Toms River North NJ in the ROC, and in the Invitational boys race, it's NE#8 Warwick Valley NY, NE#9 Monsignor Farrell NY, and NE#10 Cherokee NJ.

And NE#3 Christian Brothers Academy NJ set a new consecutive win streak in dual meets at 266.

Preview: Steel City Invitational @ Coatesville HS,

by Scott Parks, PennTrackXC correspondent

Steel City Invitational features two ranked Northeast teams, NE#4
Council Rock North PA boys, and newly ranked NE#9 Parkland PA girls,
along with several strong challengers.

Steel City is shaping up to be another competitive invitational with
some of the top teams in the state on the boys and girls side. Although
US# 10 Cedar Cliff will be trying their luck down at Great American
this year, US #22 Council Rock will be looking for the win. The Rock
has two amazing front runners in John Mahoney and Brandon Pomerantz,
who have dominated the field at DeSales University Invitational and
Council Rock Invitational. Pomerantz went 16:41 on a challenging
DeSales course and 16:07 on Council Rock's course. Mahoney was just
behind with 16:43 at DeSales and edged Pomerantz out with 16:00. With a
strong 3-5, depending on staying healthy, Council Rock proves hard to
beat. Challenging the Rock will also be Coatesville. Coming off a
strong 3rd place finish at Carlisle, the Coatesville boys seemed
strong. Even with the absence of Amin Garnett, Coatesville averaged
16:52 on a fairly quick Carlisle course. With home course advantage,
the harriers from Coatesville could challenge the Rock. The Parkland
boys should also be in the hunt, after falling 3 points behind
Coatesville's performance at Carlisle. They averaged 16:54 and
sophomore Tim Stepp looks to lead his team to a high finish at Steel
City. Notable individuals who will be looking to challenge for the win:
Junior Greg Thomas of Cardinal O'Hara who recently finished 7th at
Briarwood Invitational and posted a solid 16:12 performance at a
modified 3.1 (40m short) mile Steel City course last year. Kyle Murray,
Central Bucks South, is coming off a blazing 15:41 performance at Paul
Short this past weekend and looks to improve upon his 3rd place (15:58)
at Steel City last year.

On the girl's side, a strong list of girl's teams look to battle it out
in a midseason meet. New to the invitational this year, and fresh off
their upsets over St. Basil and Hatboro Horsham, the NE#9 Parkland
girls look to add another win to their list. Parkland upset Hatboro at
DeSales on 9/11 and then went to Carlisle (19:52 average) to beat a
vulnerable St. Basil team. Led by Erin Roberts, Katie Stepp and Emma
Stanley, Parkland will bring lots of talent to a tough and unfamiliar
course. Right on their heels, Chambersburg has had early success as
well, placing fourth in the state caliber meet at Carlisle. Sarah
Morrison and Brooke Jacobs will try to get past Parkland in order to
repeat as Steel City champs. With Chambersburg familiar with the
course, they will give Parkland a run for their money. Although the
Cedar Cliff girl's team traditionally went to Steel City they will
accompany their boy's team at Great American along with St. Basil.
Other individuals looking for the win include Christina and Yianna
Antonopoulos of York Suburban who placed 4th and 6th respectively last
year at Steel City and are coming off of strong performances in The
Race of Champions at Carlisle (Christina - 1st, 19:26 and Yianna - 8th,
20:00). Also in the hunt for top finishes among girls include
Coatesville's Kristina Kubala, Perkiomen Valley's Brittney Long, and
Pennsbury's Jessica Wolff.

Northeast Top 10 Preview

Boys

1. Fayetteville-Manlius NY - Since a convincing win on 9/18, this team
has been training to perform well for the next two weekends. At the
Manhattan Inv. 10/9, they get to face NE#3 Christian Brothers Academy
NJ. But first, they'll have the challenge of the large field at the
McQuaid Inv in Rochester NY, with a head-to-head against NE#6 Lockport
NY.

2. Cedar Cliff PA - The Colts won convincingly on 9/25 at the Carlisle
Invitational. And they haven't hidden their plan to put a lot of their
2004 eggs in the Great American basket. They'll have their hands full
against several top teams, most significant of which are the US#6
(Southwest #1) Mountain View UT squad, along with the pre-season NE#2
and current NE#4 Toms River North.

3.Christian Brothers NJ – CBA will race at the huge Shore Coaches
Invitational at Holmdel Park, site of NJ's Groups and All-Groups
championships. But this week wasn't just a normal week for the Colts.
They tied and then set a national dual meet record for consecutive wins
that began with the season-opening meet in 1974. The number is a
magical 266 and it came at home before a crowd of 500 in a 15-50 win
over Middletown North on 9/30. The record had been held by
Blackstone-Millville MA and went from 1974-1992. CBA tied the mark at
home on 9/28 against Marlboro. Their last loss was in 1973 to Raritan
NJ. The closest they came to an end to the streak was win #94 in 1981
when the meet was decided on the 6th man against St. John Viaaney NJ.

NE#1 Fayetteville-Manlius NY in the Varsity Boys C Race on 10/9 at the
Manhattan Invitational in NYC.

4. Council Rock North PA - Missing two of their varsity seven because
of the holiday, Council Rock North's boys held off a challenge from
sister school Council Rock South at their home invite, 63-79 on 9/25.
They will compete at the big Steel City Invitational on 10/2 in
Coatesville PA. PennTrackXC onsite coverage.

5.Toms River North NJ – The pre-season #2 ranked team in the Northeast
would like to get back into that spot. They'll get the chance to
challenge the current #2, Cedar Cliff PA in the Race of Champions at
Great American XC Festival. They beat East Brunswick NJ 9/23, but just
by 12 at the Cougar Inv @ Colts Neck NJ.

6. Lockport NY – They'll get their first shot by a ranked team at NE#1
Fayetteville-Manlius NY in the McQuaid Invitational on 10/2 in
Rochester NY. Lockport NY will face NE#7 Monsignor Farrell NY in the
Boys Varsity A race on 10/9 at the Manhattan Inv in NYC.

7.Monsignor Farrell NY – After joining the NE rankings at #9 a week
ago, Monsignor Farrell NY won convincingly at the 9/25 Paul Short PA
Invitational. They are racing in the Boys Seeded Invitational at Great
American against NE#9 Cherokee and formerly ranked Warwick Valley NY,
which won the 2nd tier race at the 9/25 FLrunners.com V Invitatonal.

8. Shenendehowa NY – The NE#8 Shen boys will run at the Everett T. Grout Memorial Cross Country Invitational at Central Park in Schenectady, New York 10/2. Shen has been training for several weeks, and did not draw ranked competition for next week's Manhattan Invitational in NYC.
They will be in varsity Race D.

9.Cherokee NJ – Still missing two of their top four runners to injury,
they showed great depth in a format that put a team's 1 and 2 in one
race, 3 and 4 in another, and 5-6 and 7 in a third race at the new
South Jersey Shootout at Gloucester County College in Sewell NJ with a
scoring spread of 1:03. #1 or #2 runner Sean
McLaughlin started running again on 9/22 and may race at Great American
in the Invitational race. Cherokee will be skipping Manhattan and
refocusing on Easterns on 10/16.

10. Bishop Hendricken RI - In what Coach Jim Doyle termed a 'rebuilding
year,' his team looked like one of New England's best with a 17:07 over
the hilly Manchester NH invitational course 9/25, winning 94-111 over
Londonderry NH. They will race against formerly ranked Chaminade NY in
the Boys Varsity F race at Manhattan Inv. But first it's a trip to the
1st Annual Ukrops XC Festival in Richmond VA on 10/2.

FLrunners.com V and will race against NE##9 Cherokee NJ and NE#7

other in the 10/2 St. Anthony's Invitational on Long Island NY.

Girls

1.Saratoga Springs NY – Getting their invitational race legs under them
in a Great American tune-up at the E.J. Herman Inv in Utica NY, US#1
Saratoga Springs NY nearly scored a shutout behind the course record

Great American Race of Champions where they face US#2 Smoky Hill CO.
This race will be followed by a visit to Van Cortlandt Park for Eastern
States on 10/9.

they did not race 9/25. They will go to the McQuaid Inv. on 10/2.

3.Bethlehem Central NY – Took off 9/25 to prep for the Race of
Champions at Great American.

4. Champlain Valley VT

5. Manchester Central NH

Both move up a spot after the #7 place finish by previous PA#3 St.
Basil at the Carlisle Invitiatonal. These two teams were within a point
of each other at the 9/25 Manchester NH invitational. Iit was the
tenacity of the top two runners and fortitude of the 3-4 runners that
pulled it out over the last mile for the visitors from Vermont.
Champlain Valley will race 10/2 at the Thetford VT Invitational.
Manchester Central will take off.

6. Hanover NH - With injuries to deal with, they opted to run the Small
Schools race at the 9/25 Manchester NH invitational. They won with 73
points. They will race again 10/9.

7. Monsignor Donovan NJ – Stayed home to run a 5k road race as a
school fundraiser for St. Joseph's parish, the Carpenter's Classic.
They will run at Great American 10/2 in the Race of Champions.

8. Concord-Carlisle MA – They were off 9/25 and will do a repeat
performance 10/2 before racing 10/9 at the Bay State Invitational where
they will face previously ranked Amherst MA.

9. Parkland PA - One of PA's continually excellent programs, Parkland
knocked off two NE ranked teams in three weeks, beating Hatboro-Horsham
9/11 at Centaur, and then St. Basil 9/25 at Carlisle. Their 19:53
average on the flat but turn-laden Carlisle course was just as
impressive as the win. They will face Chambersburg and other strong
teams at the 10/2 Steel City PA Invitational. They face a tough 10/12
dual meet with League and District rival Allentown Central Catholic,
which won Paul Short 9/25. Coach Loretta Dodson's squad is trimming the
scoring spread-time with each week of training, as her top runners
continue to close on the front-runners in PA.

10.Unionville PA - They took off 9/25 and will race their B team on
10/2 at the Steel City Invitational, while #1 Katie Thaeder will run
individually in the Race of Champions at Great American. Their varsity

Catholic PA at the 9/25 Paul Short Invitational by 17 points. Both
teams beat previously ranked Gwynedd Mercy, PA.

Niskayuna at Niskayuna 9/28, and is racing the Seeded Invitational race
