Boys

1. Fayetteville-Manlius NY - After a dominating win at the 9/18 East Syracuse-Minoa Invitational, they took 9/25 off to prep for the 10/2 McQuaid NY Invitational.

2. Cedar Cliff PA - At the Carlisle PA Invitational, with one of their top guys still off his best a bit, Cedar Cliff showed once again that they have depth, placing men at 3, 7, 11, 24 and 26, with a scoring total of 62, 44 better than the Milller twins-led Manheim Township squad. The 16:28 average was nine seconds better than MT. Craig and Brad Miller went one-two again. One coach noted that Brad was on Craig's heels, looking back to simply make sure that Cedar Cliff #1 Pat Caulfield wasn't going to pass him. Cedar Cliff puts it all on the line in Cary on 10/2 in the hot race, where they'd probably like to improve on their 1:02 scoring spread they displayed at Carlisle. The Carlisle course is all grass (crossing one road) and looks like it should be fast, but the short rises and many turns are rhythm-breakers. It was 70+ and sunny. There is only a 40 meter stretch of shade on the entire course.

3. Christian Brothers Academy NJ - CBA DID NOT run their top eight at the Stewart Memorial Inv in Elizabeth NJ on 9/25. The varsity trained through the weekend and is taking aim at the Shore Coaches at Holmdel NJ 10/2 and then hope to have a head-to-head with NE#1 Fayetteville-Manlius NY on 10/9 at the Manhattan Inv at Vanny.

4. Toms River North NJ - Toms River North NJ knows there's a target on their backs, and on 9/23 at the Cougar Invitational at Bucks River Park hosted by Colts Neck NJ HS, they knew East Brunswick NJ was taking aim. The 42-54 win by the NE#4 TRN was probably as close as they care to come. Their 16:44 scoring average was 11 seconds better than the runner-up. They placed five in the top 13 and all seven in the top 24 with a scoring spread of 1:10. East Brunswick placed three in the top eight, and then 16, 23 to add the points they couldn't overcome. Toms River's Chris Pisano, a senior, was 2nd in 15:58, breaking the course record by 20 seconds. But he was half a minute shy of the winning time for New Jersey's answer to PA's Craig - Miller, that is, Craig Forys, a sophomore, blazed to a 15:28. Forys had set several records as a frosh, going 9:20 for 3200 and 4:16 for 1600 as a 14-year-old. He just turned 15 in July.

5. Council Rock North PA - Missing two of their varsity seven because of the holiday, Council Rock North's boys held off a challenge from sister school Council Rock South at their home invite, 63-79. North's John Mahoney and teammate Brandon Pomerantz went 1-2 in 16:00 and 16:07. Rock races at the Steel City PA Inv on 10/2. It was a new course and according to Rock coach David Marrington, is an accurate 5k because it has been "measured three times by a wheel and one time by a GPS system." It's grass with rolling hills and is a fast surface. Temperature was in the 70s and sunny.

6. Lockport NY - Won the split squad format 9/18 WNYT&CC Officials Invitational on Beaver Island. They will run at the McQuaid Invitational on 10/2. They have a league meet with Niagara Falls and Kenmore West on 9/28.

7. Shenendehowa NY – Won Shaker Inv 9/11 and did not race 9/18 or 9/25. They took off 9./25 and will race the 10/9 Manhattan Inv.

8.Warwick Valley NY – Won the 9/25 FLrunners.com V Invitational race with the 5th best team average (17:04.78) of the day. Coach St. Lawrence is bringing his young team along slowly, and will use a similar strategy at Great American 10/2, running the 2nd tier race. His squad will aim for the November meets to show their best, with NY Federations the big target on their calendar.

9. Monsignor Farrell NY - With an efficient 16:34 average, Monsignor Farrell won the boys race at the Paul Short PA Invitational by 37 over West Chester East. Central Bucks South's Kyle Murray went 15:41 to win. According to Farrell coach Tom Cuffe, the race went out relatively fast, and they were out fast as a team, with Farrell #1 Danny Lewis and eventual winner Kyle Murray of Central Bucks South taking control and coming through the mile in 4:57. Farrell #2 Jeff Carbonella was running 3rd at 5:01, with Marc Williamson & John Casside in a group at 15 and 22 at 5:07 and 5:08. Vito Cannavo was out in 5:13 in 42nd. At two miles, Lewis was still step-for-step with Murray, with Carbonella 6th, Cannavo 16th (moving up 26 spots), and Cassidy 18th with Williamson 24th. Lewis and Carbonella faded, but the team came home hard over the final 400, which has a slight inclined finish. Lewis finished 4th in 16:05.

14-year old Neely Spence made her high school debut - in the college open 6k race because she is homeschooled - and finished 4th on the 6k course, running 22:04. The time would have placed her 45 in the College Women's Invitational.

10 Cherokee NJ - Still missing two of their top four runners to injury, Cherokee NJ showed great depth in a format that put a team's 1 and 2 in one race, 3 and 4 in another, and 5-6 and 7 in a third. Cherokee's total of 11 for the new South Jersey Shootout at Gloucester County College in Sewell NJ was off a 2nd and 3rd in the first and second races and a first place in the third where they went 1-2-3. They showed a scoring spread of 1:03. The races were run 5-6-7, 3-4 and 1-2. Cherokee coach Steve Shaklee described the course as challenging, noting that from the 1 1/4 to the 2 1/2 mile mark it wound through a dirt trail in the woods with many turns and some very steep (short) hills.  Ocean City was their nearest competition. A top 20 NJ team, the tallied 24 points. Cherokee was missing Sean McLaughlin (#1 or #2 runner), and James Maneval (#4 runner), who, if healthy, would be a good 20-25 seconds in front of Mike Candy (#5 runner). McLaughlin started running again on 9/22 and may race at Great American in the Invitational race. Maneval and Candy will not be racing.  Cherokee will be skipping Manhattan and refocusing on Easterns on 10/16.

the day.

Girls

1.Saratoga Springs NY – Getting their invitational race legs under them in a Great American tune-up at the E.J. Herman Inv in Utica NY, US#1 Saratoga Springs NY nearly scored a shutout behind the course record 16:55 by Nicole Blood. The time broke the 17:10 run by Erin Davis in 1993. Coach Linda Kranick noted that Davis and Blood aren't the only elites to have challenged the course, as Patty Weigand, Denise Bushalow and Cheri Goddard have all raced there. Saratoga's Lindsey Ferguson reportedly collapsed within sight of the finish and was a DNF. Saratoga's average was 17:57. The course itself is fairly fast - a mix of grass with about a mile of rolling, paved hills. Sarotoga next runs at the Race of Champions in the Great American 10/2, followed by a visit to Van Cortlandt Park for Eastern States on 10/9.

Earlier in the week, Saratoga went 1-5 in a tri-meet with NE#3 Bethlehem Central NY and Colonie, and they looked every bit of US#1 and maybe a little more on a new course at Colonie HS described as challenging, mostly on grass with two small hills and no shade. Definitely 5k.

2.Bay Shore NY - Rained out at the Suffolk County Coaches Inv. 9/18,
Did not race 9/25. They will go to the McQuaid Inv. on 10/2.

3.Bethlehem Central NY – Without their #1 runner, they won the rain-saturated Guilderland Inv 9/18, and rested 9/25 with their sights set on the top race at the 10/2 Great American XC Festival.

4.St. Basil PA – St. Basil coach Greg Green says they'll be back, but he was obviously disappointed after an unexpected 7th place finish at the Carlisle Invitational. #1 Lynn Morelli led much of the race, and hung on for 4th. Soph Christine Morelli was coming off an illness, and was in decent shape until the final 800. And the youngest of the Morelli sisters, Rachel, sprained her ankle in the closing stretch and dropped to 98th, running 7th for the team. Parkland is clearly one of PA's top teams this year, and they took the best of the west, North Allegheny PA, 85 to 111. Cedar Cliff PA was two points back in third. Big Spring sophomore Lara Crofford won the race by three seconds over fellow soph Sarah Morrison of Chambersburg PA, 18:40-18:43. Parkland placed four in the top 25. They have a mean stretch coming up with a dual meet, league and districts against District 11 rival Allentown Central Catholic, which won the Paul Short Invitational over previously ranked Warwick Valley NY. Hoping for redemption, St. Basil next travels to NC for the top race at Great American. And on 10/9, they'll run the Eastern States race - which is turning out to be the biggest showdown for the Northeast teams - at Van Cortlandt Park in NYC.

Preview

Newly ranked Monsignor Farrell NY is dedicating this season to a
teammate who died after being hit by a car while training in June.

The 9/25 Manchester NH Invitational is one of the largest in New England. This year, 93 girls teams and 87 boys teams will challenge the terrain, each other, and individual aspirations over the challenging 3.1 mile layout. Headlining the meet will be three girls teams which are currently ranked in the Northeast, #5 Champlain Valley VT, #7 Manchester Central NH, #9 Hanover NH, and previously ranked Concord NH. Also racing will be Freeport junior Abby Samuelson, daughter of distance great Joan Benoit Samuelson. On the boys side, teams from Greely Me, Griswald CT, Bishop Hendricken RI, Essex Junction VT, and Londonderry and Keene NH will compete. Foot Locker finalist Cory Thorne of Portsmouth ME will also be there. Frosh race at 9. Last race at two.

Boys

1. Fayetteville-Manlius NY - The FM boys won the East Syracuse-Minoa
Invitational 9/18 with a score of 23 points and a scoring five spread
of just 14 seconds. That was a week after winning the opening
Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Inv taking the first five places. They will take
9/25 to prep for their next big test at the 10/2 McQuaid Inv.

2. Cedar Cliff PA - The Colts have been aiming for this two-week
stretch since summer. After a convincing team win at the 9/11
Gettysburg Inv, they resumed training and will face a quickly
developing Manheim Township squad along with five other 2003
state-qualifying teams. Then it's off to the big race at the Great
American XC Festival 10/2 in Cary, NC.

3.Christian Brothers NJ – CBA went 1-3-6-9-11 for 30 points and a 31
point edge on host De La Salle CA at the 9/18 DeLaSalle Invitational.
Word is they are running a JV meet 9/25, then cranking it up a bit with
the Shore Coaches @ Holmdel 10/2 and Manhattan 10/9.

4.Toms River North NJ – Ran well at Cherokee Challenge class races
9/18. Next invitational scheduled was the Cougar Inv on 9/23 at Bucks
Mill Park in Colts Neck NJ.

5. Council Rock North PA - Came up big in beating Philly Catholic
League power LaSalle and NE#8 Chaminade NY on 9/18 at the Briarwood
Invitational. Hosting their own invitational on 9/25 before competing
at the big Steel City Invitational on 10/2 in Coatesville PA.

6. Lockport NY – Won the split squad format 9/18 WNYT&CC Officials
Invitational on Beaver Island. They will run at the McQuaid
Invitational on 10/2.

7. Shenendehowa NY – Won the Shaker Inv 9/11, and will take 9./25 off
after doing the same 9/18. They will race the 10/9 Manhattan Inv.

8.Warwick Valley NY – They'll run the 2nd tier races at 9/25
FLrunners.com V and the 10/2 Great American XC Festival.

9.Monsignor Farrell NY – Vaulted into the NE rankings following their
16 points to win the 9/11 Wagner Invitational @ Wagner College, and 24
points at the Regis Inv on 9/18 @ Van Cortlandt Park NYC. They were on
their way to Sunken Meadows when the meet was called, and turned the
bus toward Van Cortlandt. They will travel to PA 9/25 to compete at the
Paul Short Invitational. Farrell is dedicating this season to former
teammate Robbie Breen who was killed by a car while training in June.
"His spirit is around us. We stand on the shoulders of giants, and
we're standing on his," commented head coach Tom Cuffe.

10.Cherokee NJ – Opened 9/18 at their own invitational, the Cherokee
Challenge, which is a two-mile class race. Scheduled to race the 9/25
South Jersey Shootout, but may hold off for the Great American 10/2
because of two key injuries.

Girls

Saratoga Springs girls are in a different league, even in their own.
Newly ranked Monsignor Donovan NJ coach says this season is like a
fairy tale.

1.Saratoga Springs NY – The US#1 squad looked every bit of that and
maybe a little more at a tri-meet on a new course at Colonie HS
described as challenging, mostly on grass with two small hills and no
shade. Definitely 5k. They swept the first five places on a very good
NE#3 Bethlehem Central NY.
1. Caitlin Lane - Sar 18:20
2. Lindsey Ferguson - Sar 18:35
3. Karen Delay - Sar 18:36
4. Nicole Blood - Sar 18:46

Saratoga's top 5 average time: 18:37
Bethlehem Central's top 5 average time ; 19:39

Saratoga will run at Great American 10/2, followed by a visit to Van
Cortlandt Park for Eastern States on 10/9. They have a full plate from
10/30 on, so they worry mostly about staying healthy.

2.Bay Shore NY - They solidified their NE#2 with a sweep of the first
three spots at the Spiked Shoe PA Inv 9/11, and were rained out of the
Suffolk County Coaches Inv. 9/18. They will go to McQuaid on 10/2.

3.Bethlehem Central NY – Bethlehem Central won the 9/11 Shaker Inv,
and the 9/18 Guilderland Inv before running into the Saratoga Springs
NY juggernaut on 9/21 in a tri-meet at Colonie NY. (see above and be
amazed, agaiin).

4.St. Basil PA – St. Basil beat former NE#3 Hatboro-Horsham 9/3, and
trained through the next two weekends to ready themselves for the 9/25
Carlisle Inv, where they will face Parkland PA, Cedar Cliff PA,
Chambersburg PA, and five other 2003 state qualifying teams; followed
by the hot race at the Great American XC Festival 10/2.

5. Champlain Valley VT – Running without their #1, they still placed
five scorers in the top ten for 32 points and the win 9/11 at the Essex
Inv. They next race 9/25 at the Manchester Inv, where they will face
NE#6 Manchester Central NH, NE#9 Hanover NH, and former NE#9 Concord
NH.

6. Manchester Central NH – Ranked #1 in New Hampshire, they'll stay
home and have some great competition come to them at the 9/25
Manchester Invitational, facing two ranked and one previously ranked
teams.

7. Monsignor Donovan NJ – Easily won the 9/11 St. Dominic Academy
Invitational at Lincoln Park in Jersey City over Morristown NJ,
Westfield NJ and other good teams with just 31 points. Reinforced with
three freshmen in the top five, and two seniors who have been great for
three prior seasons, coach Joe Gomulka sees this season "like a
fairytale." They won a class meet 9/18 in Elizabeth NJ, and will be
staying home this Saturday to run in a fundraising 5k road race for the
parish. They will run Great American 10/2.

8. Concord-Carlisle MA – New this week in the top ten after beating
former NE#5 Amherst MA at the Amherst Invitational. They are scheduled
to compete at the 10/9 Bay State Invitational.

9. Hanover NH - Did not compete 9/18. Ranked #2 in New Hampshire,
they'll join the great competition at the 9/25 Manchester
Invitational, facing two ranked and one previously ranked teams. They
may be missing two of their varsity seven.

10.Unionville PA - Pennsylvania's overnight success story that took
eight years for coach Mark Lacianca to build. What he has is a
frontrunner in Katie Thaeder and a gap of just 1:02 for the scoring
five. They won the Hereford Invitational in Maryland 9/25 with just 44
points. On 9/3, Unionville beat West Chester Henderson PA by over
2-1/2 minutes in a 4xtwo-mile relay at Henderson's home course.
Henderson then went on a two week tear, beating previously ranked
Gwynedd-Mercy on 9/11 at Abington and on 9/18 at Briarwood. Hence, #10
for Unionville.
