Nobody said it would be easy to pick the top two teams in the Northeast. In the first two weeks of the campaign in PA, the apple cart has not only been upset, it's been tossed against a wall and smashed.

Pre-season NE#3 Hatboro Horsham lost last week to unranked St. Basil. This week, they traveled to the Centaur Invitational at Desales University, and lost to an always talented, but unranked Parkland squad, 62-100. Parkland placed three ahead of Hatboro's first.

And in Abington, NE#4 Gwynedd Mercy got off on a bit of the wrong foot, losing to unranked West Chester Henderson. Taking nothing away from Henderson, Gwynedd was missing #2 runner Khaki Mealey, who is out with a stress fracture, and transfer Liz Kearins, PA#3 in 2003, who is awaiting a Wednesday hearing by the PIAA over her transfer, which was not signed off by her former HS principal. Henderson won 56-73.

And in Gettysburg, Cedar Cliff toasted the field, tallying 45 points, as their usual #3 or 4 finished 6th on the team. An improving Manheim Township was 2nd with 77 points, after starting with just three from twins Craig and Brad Miller. Craig broke his own course record, going 15:28, with Brad 2nd in 15:31. Cedar Cliff placed four in the top nine, behind senior Pat Caulfield, 3rd in 15:39.

Northeast Boys Summary

Morristown NJ defeated US#16, NE#1 Christian Brothers Academy, 35-59, for boys' team honors, but the Colts withheld their top runners to train for the upcoming trip to the DeLaSalle Invitational in California. They are running this one in lieu of the Great American because they have other business that week: breaking the all-sport national dual competition winning streak; New Jersey's other top teams, NE#2 Toms River North NJ and NE#9 Cherokee NJ will be at Raleigh.

US#30 NE#3 Cedar Cliff PA held off the three-point start by Manheim Township twins Craig and Brad Miller, placing four in the top nine to tally just 45 points. The Colts dominated the field with a scoring average on the grass, mostly flat 16:16 average, even with one of their top guys off his stride a bit (running 7th). The Cedar Cliff front-runner was senior Pat Caulfield, who ran through two miles stride-for-stride with the Millers to garner 3rd overall in 15:40. The Millers went 15:29 and 15:31. Also making a great opening statement was US#25 NE#5 Fayetteville-Manlius NY which took the first five places on a soggy course at the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Inv in Verona NY. NE#6 Warwick Valley NY easily won their home invitational, the Big Purple Inv, with just 32 points, placing all five in the top ten with a 26-second spread and a 17:03 scoring average. NE#8 Shenendehowa NY won the Shaker Inv with 46 points at Colonie Town Park NY. After race winner Dan McManamon in 15:43, Shen placed scorers in the top 18.

Northeast Girls Summary

Defending US#1 Saratoga will concentrate on training and dual meets until their first big test at Great American 10/2, followed by a visit to Van Cortlandt Park for Eastern States on 10/9.

US#7 NE#2 Bay Shore NY traveled into PA for the Spiked Shoe Inv @ Penn State University and dominated again behind the 1st place finish of 2002 Foot Locker finalist Laura Cummings, now a senior, who ran 18:09. Bay Shore also took the next two spots and totaled just 39 points.

US#14 NE#3 Hatboro-Horsham PA slipped for the second time in eight days. After losing 9/3 to St. Basil PA at the Viking Inv, they went to the Centaur Inv on the DeSales University campus, the site of the PIAA District 11 Chamionships. The top team this time was Parkland PA, a perennial power in D11 and the state. The score of 62-100 tells it all, as Parkland placed three in the top seven and their final scorer at 30th.

US#16, NE#4 Gwynedd-Mercy also came up a bit short in their opener at the Abington PA Inv. Short one top runner to injury and another to a school transfer challenge, they lost 56-73 to West Chester Henderson, who could be one of the many PA surprises this season.

Running without their #1, NE#6 Champlain Valley VT still placed five scorers in the top ten for 32 points and the win. Six and seven were in 11th and 16th at the Essex Invitational.

NE#8 Morris Knolls NJ won the Livingston NJ Inv with 18 points.

And NE#10 Warwick Valley NY placed five in the top ten and all seven in the top 19 at the Big Purple Festival, a home meet, and easily won with just 27 points behind the course record 17:33 by 2003 Foot Locker Finalist Aislinn Ryan.
