late in the first mile, the runners cross the field and circle the baseball
diamond,
about the only level stretch in the entire course
the Terraces
Near the end of the first mile,
the runners climb The Terraces, which brings them to a crawl and kills
any chance of a fast mile split. The Terraces are like a big grassy stairway,
with 7 foot treads and 7 foot risers.

Finally, at the top, the
runners make a 90 degree turn
toward the mile mark in a short level stretch.
