Top Seed Table

AUSTIN TX 5/14/2004 -- A big thunderstorm raged through central Texas last night, with baseball sized hail and flash floods. A different storm will rage today and tomorrow at Myers Stadium, the University of Texas track and soccer facility. The best runners, jumpers and throwers from hundreds of Texas high schools will compete for 170 state championships -- 17 events, five classes, boys and girls.

Being the best in Texas often means being the best in the US. The following are at or near the top of the DyeStat Elite top 100 national rankings for the 2004 outdoor season, and Scott Sellers and Erica McLain have a shot at national records this weekend.

  • Scott Sellers 5A HJ and TJ - Cinco Ranch Katy TX junior hardly ever goes below 7 feet. He set the national indoor record (7-5.25) at the Nike Indoor Championships. He cleared 7-5 in his regional meet and had three cracks at the outdoor record (7-7 by Andra Manson of Texas at the World Juniors in Jamaica 2 years ago). He has his eye not only on the HS record but the qualifying standard for the US Olympic Trials. He has already met the B standard (7-2.75) but the A standard (7-5.75) would assure a spot ikn the trials. Sellers is also the 5A top seed in triple jump (49-0.5)
  • Erica McLain 5A TJ - But for a sliver too strong tail wind, the Plano East senior would have set the national record in her regional. She soared 44-3.5 but she had a 2.1 meters per second tail wind, 0.1 over the limit for record purposes. The mark was one inch better than the national record (44-2.25), which was set right here 3 years ago by Ychlindria Spears. McLain was over 43 feet this year in winning the Texas Relays and Arcadia Invitational.
  • Jason Richardson 5A hurdles - The Cedar Hill senior has been best in the US for 2 years over the 110 meter barriers, and he is US #2 at 300H. His regional marks of 13.42 and 36.74 were his season bests, so he should be ready to roll.. Richardson also runs on Cedar Hill's 3:15.34 4x400 relay, which is a finalist..
  • 5A girls 100H - Eisenhower sr Alandra Sherman and Westbury sr Jessica Ohanaja are co-top seeds (13.60) and it could be that close at the finish. Sherman, the defending state champ and 2004 US#1 in both 110H and 300H, is US#3 this year in 100H and US#4 in 300H.
  • 5A boys 1600 - This race could be a barn burner, with Texas Relays champ Jake Morse (Arlington sr 4:11.47), Cinco Ranch Katy sr Kyle Miller, 2nd in Texas Relays and the Nike Indoor champ (4:12.14 full mile), and Foot Locker national finalists Brian Sullivan (Woodlands sr 4:09.60 1600m US#1) and Scott MacPherson (Plano junior, 8:54.50 3200, 2nd Texas Relays). .
  • Britni Lawrence 5A PV - Hays Buda senior attracts attention for her unusual approach (pushing the pole on the ground until the last second), but also her heights (2004 season best of 13-1.5 at the Texas Relays). Britni got knocked off her US#1 spot this week by Danielle O'Reilly NJ 13-3 and Lindsay Regan PA 13-2, but she could reclaim the top spot here.
  • Boys Relays - The sprint relays are the heart of the meet, with the winners getting 20 points and a leg up on the overall team championship. Texas boys hold the top 5 spots in the US in 4x100 (4A Lancaster 40.61), the top two in 4x200 (5A Port Arthur Memorial 1:24.63, 4A Lancaster 1:24.78), and 2nd and 3rd in 4x400 (5A Klein Forest 3:13.8, 4A Lancaster 3:13.99). In 3A, Alto is stop seeded at 41.47 and 1:25.96..
  • Girls Relays - Texas girls are the best in the US this side of Long Beach CA, whose Poly and Wilson speedsters are US#1 and US#2 in all three sprint relays. 5A Skyline Dallas is a Texas finalist and nationally ranked in all three relays (45.41 US#3, 1:36.13 US#3, and 3:43.29 US#5). 5A North Shore Houston is 45.93 US#6 and 1:37.09 US#4. 5A Westbury Houston is 1:37.23 US#5. 4A Reagan Austin is 45.81 US#4. The 5A 4x400 will be a battle of Houston "wests", with Westside 3:45.18 and Westbury 3:47.09 the top two seeds.
  • Lancaster boys and girls relays -This school is a finalist in all 6 relay events in class 4A.
  • D'Andra Carter, 4A throws - Younger sister of national shot put record holder Michele Carter, the Red Oak junior is top seed in SP and DT (43-5 and 158-11).
  • Sprints - Texas sprinters are unuusually absent from the national leaders this year, but that could change after this meet. Three who could climb the national charts are Skyline Dallas jr Krystin Lacy (5A defending champ), Central Beaumont sr Ivory Williams (4A double top seed 10.43 and 21.13), and Taft San Antonio's Otis McDaniel (5A double top seed 10:44 and 21.23).
