Chris Spooner's Saga in the Stretch
photos by John Dye, quotes from Don Rich
Dehydration fells Lewisburg senior Chris Spooner
a few meters from a repeat AA title, but he gets up courageously
and makes it to the finish line in second place behind Westmont
Hilltop sr David Mock. |
Spooner: "I didn't feel the best I have ever
felt before the race. When I reached the stones on the final straightaway,
I could feel my whole body shutting down. When I got ten meters
from the cones (of the finish) I couldn't see. I remember hitting
the ground and saying to myself, 'get up, get up', he's coming." |
Spooner: "I'm disappointed for the team. We wanted a day
where we all ran well, but we all raced the best we could. They were
all spent. It's the best we could have done."
[Lewisburg finished 2 points behind Eisenhower, so
Spooner's fall did not cost his team the championship.] |
