Columbus North IN sr Christian Wagner, the 2-mile champion at AOC Raleigh
last June, was an easy winner. Wagner put a surge on surprise early leader
Andrew McCann, a senior from Dunbar Lexington KY, in the second mile and
that ended all suspense except the team duel between US#10 Columbus North
and US#7 Milford MI. Milford lived up to its ranking by bunching its five
scorers between North's 1st and 4th.

McCann opened a big lead in the first mile. Wagner said he was
glad to see someone else doing the work early. McCann said he knew
he was going too fast when he saw the clock at the end of 1600 meters,
but he hung on gamely for 7th place in the end. |

Wagner reeled in McCann (left), and Dustin Voss, Jeff See,
and Seth Thibodeau (below) gapped the rest.

"I just want to break 15."
Christian Wagner's comments:
|
"I tried to throw in a few surges and keep the tempo up. It
felt pretty good today."
Dye: Where did you get the lead?
"I threw in a little surge at the hairpin in the second mile
and got a little gap. Then I tried to maintain it up the hill.
" It was a little slippery out there with the mud and everything.
Last year it was like a track. That was great."
Dye: How do you compare your condition now vs. last year at this
time?
"My condition is better. I dumped in quite a few more miles
in the summer than last year. My training's going good right now.
I ran 20 seconds faster in my first meet on the same course as last
year."
Dye: What's your goal for the year?
"I want to break 15 some time." (He thinks he would
have here if the course were dry.)
Dye: You should have a good shot at finishing high in Foot Locker.
"I hope so. If I stay healthy, I'll get out there again
and maybe perform a little better this year." (Wagner finished
5th in the Midwest region last year and 27th in San Diego.)
Dye: How is college recruiting oging?
"I've had a few phone calls. I haven't done any campus visits
yet. I'm keeping my mind on cross country for the time being." |
