St. Xavier Invitational9/21/02 at St. Xavier HS, Cincinnati, OH |

from a DyeStat correspondent With the top three teams in the Ohio Coaches' State Poll squaring off
Saturday, the St. Xavier Invitational, one of Cincinnati's largest, could
be viewed as a preview of Ohio's state meet. However, it also served as
a tune-up for Ohio #1 Hilliard Davidson, #2 Middletown and #3 St. Xavier,
before they travel to Charlotte next week for the Great American Cross
Country Festival. After finishing a modest 5th at the Midwest Meet of
Champions, which they hosted, Davidson seemed to remedy their fifth man
problems as they collected the win with a 55 point total. Alan Burkitt
(7th at Midwest Meet of Champions) and Christian Nichols (15th) took 3rd
and 5th respectively to lead Davidson, as they both dipped under 16:00
for the 5k. St. Xavier made it a race with a close second (60 points),
led by junior Tommy Balmat, whose 15:58 garnered 7th place. Middletown
looked good up front collecting 4th, 6th, and 9th, courtesy Jeff See,
Michael Veatch and Malcolm Tipton, but apparently struggled to find their
final scorers, as two of their runners had health problems. Chris Kollar,
winner of the Spiked Shoe Invitational, claimed the individual title.
Starting out slowly, the Strongsville senior defeated Fairfield’s
John Dixon (15:36) en route to taking down David Alber's (Vandalia Butler,
currently running for the University of Notre Dame) course record by clocking
a 15:27. The course was slightly muddy and temperatures were in the high
70's. Boys’ Standings: Boys’ Individuals: On the girls side, an even tighter battle ensued, this time with Hilliard Davidson's squad coming up short as Ohio's defending Division 1 Champion, Turpin, won the meet, 38-40. Turpin avenged a two point loss at Davidson's hands at the Midwest Meet of Champions, and were led by Corey Randall's victory in 18:11. Meet of Champions winner Carolyn Rauen was apparently nursing a slight knee injury, as she took 3rd in 18:18. Davidson took half of the top 12 places (including five straight, #6-10), but could not overcome Turpin's strength up front (Melanie Price was 3rd for Turpin in 5th place, with an 18:47). Next week Turpin will go to Charlotte for the Race of Champions, where they should be able to compete for a top five team finish. Girls’ Team Standings Girls’ Individuals:
