Shadrack Kiptoo dazzles in debut -
Albuquerque Academy sweeps team titles

In his first high school race in the United States, Shadrack Kiptoo set a course record of 15:21 (3.025 miles), winning by 53 seconds. Kiptoo, who came to Albuquerque from Kenya a year ago to join friends and relatives from Eldoret Kenya, was just ruled eligible by the New Mexico Activities Association. Kiptoo runs for La Cueva High School, whose coach Eddy Hellebuyck holds US Masters records from 5k through the marathon. Hellebuyck, a Belgian who is now a US citizen, was the top American finisher at the Boston Marathon last year. Kiptoo ran a 14:46 5k in the Lobo Invitational earlier this year.

Kiptoo pulled away with ease in the first mile of the Albuquerque City Championships. He was never pushed and won by a :53 second margin over Andres Urbina of Albuquerque Academy. The all-everything import made the 3.025 mile hilly course (5280 feet elevation) look like a walk in the park. The time of 15:21 is the fastest time on an eight year-old course that has been the host site for 25 high school meets. Kiptoo's victory was not enough to lead the La Cueva Bears to the team title in the boys. Albuquerque Academy swept both the boys 26- 97 over Eldorado and girls 32 - 57 over Sandia.
