Tupelo sweeps

Tupelo High’s cross country teams captured all the titles at the Pontotoc Invitational Saturday in the first local meet featuring its primary local rivals Pontotoc and Saltillo. Emily Crow, Robert Scribner, Jordyn Riggs and Rob Ellis were individual winners in their respective races.

In the girls’ junior high race, Tupelo girls took three of the top ten spots. Jordyn completed the two-mile course in 15:00. Sarah Ballard was second in 15:05 and Lisa Lambreth ninth in 15:26. In the team competition, Tupelo won with 35 points with Itawamba second with 44 points.

Complete team scores are as follows: Tupelo 35, Itawamba 44, Pontotoc 59, Saltillo 141, M. S. Palmer 261, and Amory 266.

The boys’ junior high race was as close as they get with Tupelo edging Pontotoc for the team title by one point. Each of the five scoring runners for Tupelo and Pontotoc competed one on one with Tupelo taking three of the five to take the win.

Rob Ellis completed the two miles in 12:29 to win the race. Ethan Schultz finished fifth in 13:07.

Tupelo dominated the varsity girls 4A-5A race taking seven of the first eleven places. Emily Crow overcame a brief illness from Thursday and Friday to take the individual title. Others finishing in the top eleven were Caitlin Marlin fourth, Lydia Rice sixth, Hunter Boerner seventh, Natalie Holland eighth, Jana Mason ninth and Mary Page Billingsley eleventh.

Robert Scribner destroyed the field in the varsity 4A-5A boys race winning by a margin of almost 2 minutes. Jack Boettcher also continued a breakthrough season finishing third. Will Stewart finished seventh, Mike Weeks ninth and, in maybe the best effort of the day, Drew Kellum was the fifth finisher for Tupelo finishing 13th overall.
