Hancock Invitational
St. Louis, MO
September 28, 2002
Varsity Boys- 5,000 Meters (moderate)
Adam Perkins triumphs to victory over Edwardsville's Stephen Pifer. The
senior combination separated from the field early on and finished with
times of 15:41 and 15:55, respectively. Even though Perkins waited later
than usual to begin a kick, he gained 14 seconds on Pifer within the final
1,000 meters. He admitted that Pifer has been the only runner to challenge
by pushing the pace against him in a cross country meet. With an individual
victory and three others in the top 8, Liberty won no contest to second
place St. Louis University high school. The national dual between tenth
ranked Liberty and the third ranked West Plains was distorted after West
Plains scratched from the meet. Eventhough, Liberty specially sent their
top squad, across state, to face the third ranked team, West Plains did
not give any reasons or pre-warning for scratching the meet. As a result,
rumors circulated throughout the Missouri running community about a tradition
of avoiding competition. Liberty won with a team score of 28 points and
all seven individuals within 14th place. Lee's Summit North high school
finished three points behind St. Louis University high school with scores
of 105 and 108. The duo of junior Adam Scrogham (3rd) and senior Brian
Touney (6th) gave North two individuals within sixth place.
Girls- 5,000 meters
As usual, the race for the team title ended in suspense. Instead of boys
national dual, three of the state's top teams clashed. Finishing third
was Lee's Summit North's Lady Broncos with a total of 74 points led by
freshman Linsdey Pierson and senior Sarah Whiting. With 73 points, Marquette
finished second by one point led by the individual champion Katy Bundy
(19:23). With front runners Whitney Danze and Jamie Hoffman finishing
second and third, repectively, Liberty pulled off the one point victory
with 72 team points.

Boys 5,000 meters-
The boys race was taken out by senior Tony Camareno (4th, Blue Springs)
in the first 800 meters. However, Lee's Summit's Marc Tegenkamp and Blue
Valley West's Paul Hefferon took control of the race with a 5:00 first
mile. Posed to break Hefferon with endurance on the hills, Tegenkamp was
relcutant to lose 50 meters on him after the hills. With 600 meters left,
Tegenkamp trailed by ten seconds and continued to cruise through comfortably.
Grady Sullivan (3rd) of Blue Valley North followed Tegenkamp by nine seconds,
whereas, Hefferon began pushing the final 500 meters. The overall champion
was Hefferon in a time of 16:04.50 with Tegenkamp finishing second in
16:19.01. Led by Camareno and sophomore Nick Small, Blue Springs claimed
victory in the large school division with a total of 59 points. In the

of 54 and 56.
Girls 5,000 meters-
In the first half-mile, Raymore-Peculiar's Kaly Prather took the race
out at a quick pace of 2:30. On a pace of 6:04 at the mile mark, she continued
to lead with Stephanie Lavin (5th, Blue Springs), Amy Stetzler (6th, Lee's
Summit) and Ellie Pishney of Blue Valley West. As the group headed for
the hills, Pishney and Prather separated from the pack. Pishney surged
from Prather with 1,000 meters to go and the combination of Jana Gwinn
(4th, Blue Valley North) and Laura Kelley (Blue Valley North) passed Lavin
was holding third place. With 600 meters left, Pishney increased her 75
meter gap over Prather and continued to victory in 19:02.87. Prather (3rd)
was eventually caught by Kelley (2nd) as the two finished with times of
19:20.71 and 19:22.03. With local powerhouses Lee's Summit North and Liberty
at the Hancock Inv., the showdown for the large school team title was
between Blue Springs and Lee's Summit. Each team finished with three runners
within 11th place, but Lee's Summsit prevailed 61 to 78. Notre Dame de
Sion had no contest in the small school race with a first place title
and 23 team points.
