Individuals

Epic Dual between Chris Barnicle and Victor Gras

Mass high school XC fans are going to be treated to an epic battle for
the individual crown this year. This is the most anticipated season in 5
years. Not since runners such as Jon Riley, Abdirzak Mohamed, Frank
Sanchez and Andy Powell have there been such strong runners up front. It
will be a 2 man race between SR Victor Gras of Belmont and JR Chris
Barnicle of Newton North. Gras, who is from France, exploded on the
national high school scene last year with a 4:06 mile. Barnicle’s
improvement has been just as dramtic culminating in a 9:04 state 2 mile
title outdoors. Who is going to win this fall? Good question. It is too
close too call. Obviously Victor’s 4:06 mile is worth more than
Barnicle’s 9:04 duece. However, Barnicle is improving faster and Gras
took a break after his great outdoor season. This may be just the edge
Barnicle needs to pull it off.

Several runners will battle to be the be
the best of the rest. Brocton’s Keith Gill ran a 4:20 mile as a soph that
normally would have been a headlining performance that got completely
overshadowed by Gras and Barnicle. St Johns (S) runner Nick Krouse ran an
impressive 4:15 in mile. He just quit soccer last week and has taken up
XC for the first time and was sucking wind in a dual meet against
Wachusett. Look for him to come on late in the season when it counts the
most. Mike Banks did not figure in the major track championships due to
injury but had a great summer of training and has come out blazing early.
James Dietz of Amherst is the best runner in the West. Erik Donohue of
Masco broke through with a 9:29 2 mile. Dan MacKay had a great XC season
last year but struggled on the track and will be looking to come on strong
this fall. Brocton’s Khalid ran a huge sub 16 race at Franklin Park in
the class meet but could not follow up that performance the rest of the
year but is one who could place a lot higher if he puts it together. Drew
Harrington of Oliver Ames would have been a lot higher but has been
hampered by a foot injury. Brian Hunt and Matt Tieuli had great freshmen
years with Hunt running a 4:32 mile. Josh Bickford of Sutton will be one
of the top freshmen this year.

Teams

Wachusett vs Methuen

Defending champ Wachusett is back with both firepower upfront and
outstanding depth which will be a tough combination to beat. Methuen is
the only team capable of beating them but they will need a huge 5th man
performance to knock off the champs.

St John’s (S), with the addition of
Krouse will be much stronger this year. Early season they ran tough with
Wachusett for half of a race. Amherst is the best team in the West. They
have the front runners but not the depth of the first 2 teams. Barnicle
has inspired the Newton North team to be one of the best but depth will be
a question mark. Sandwich has outstanding depth, with at least 7 proven
runners, but they don’t have the front runners to compete with the very
best teams. Plymouth North, coached by the wily John Laverty has several
runners back from last year’s successful team. Bromfield could be a
darkhorse but they need a 5th man. Concord has been strong the past few
years and this year will be no different. St John’s Prep (D) interim
coach John Boyle inherited a team decimated by graduation with only one
runner with big meet experience returning. He will have his work cut out
for him. Dave Dunsky is the most successful coach is Massachusetts
history but his Gloucester team doesn’t appear to have the horses this
year. Despite that, other teams would be foolish to discount any Dunsky
coached team. Bishop Feehan has no front runners but their pack is solid
and tight as always.

The main purpose of this is just for fun and to generate interest and
discussion. I am sure I left many deserving runners and teams off the
list or ranked many too low but I can assure you it was not intentional.
Good luck to all this season.
