BOYS

Div. I – Friday, 02-14-03

Newton North put it all together winning the Div. I title with 56 pts. St.
John’s Prep (Danvers) was second in 48 pts.

Best race of the day was the mile. Newton North’s sophomore Chris Barnicle
held on to win in a close race. Barnicle had to come from behind in the last
200 to win in 4:20.26, just edging Matt Clark (Barnstable) 4:21.36. Third
was Andover’s Phil Shaw in 4:22.52. Some luster was taken off the race when
St. John’s Mike Grant was out due to sickness.

Nick Krouse (St. John’s Shrewsbury) won the 1,000 meter breaking the meet
record edging John Gillespie (St. John’s Prep) 2:31.27 to 2:32.91.

Attleboro senior Hafiz Greigre broke the meet record running 34.92 for 300
meters. Dan King (Newton No.) was second in :35.25.

Tim Harding (Cambridge Rindge) was alone at the end of the 55 with an easy
:06.48 win. (2nd was :06.64). Brian Watros (St. John’s Shrewsbury) won the
600 in 1:23.52 just getting ahead of Vagner Santos’ (Brockton) 1:23.56.

Falmouth’s Eric Critzer ran away with the two mile with a 9:43.89 victory.

Ben Fulton (Newton No) did a nice job winning the Long Jump with a 21’02”
jump (actually done after the last relay had ended). Jeison King (Lowell)
won the Shot Put at 52” 01” over Emillio Williams (Haverhill) 51’05.5”.

St. John’s Prep won the 4 x 200 (1:32.82) and the 4 x 800 (8:13.20) while
Brockton won the 4 x 400 (3:28.65.

Division III – Saturday, 02-15-03 morning

Aaron Reed (Wayland) won the 600m by three seconds with an unpressed 1:22.49.
(2nd 1:25.91).

Watertown’s senior Nick Goodman ran solo in 2:33.67, winning by six seconds.

Cross Country champ Dan Sarsfield (Tewksbury) won the two mile in 9:45.77 (15
seconds), and then 10 minutes later anchored Tewksbury’s 4 x 800 to a third
place finish.

Terry Young (Mansfield) went 22’00.5” in the Long Jump and was second in the
55m Hurdles (:07.89) behind Stoneham’s Jon Garcia (:07.78).

Mike Davis (Burlington) threw the S.P. 54’00.25” to defeat Ryan Byrne
(Tewksbury) 53”07.5”.

Wayland won the 4 x 200 (1:36.06) and the 4 x 400 (3:32.07) and were second
in the 4 x 800 (8:39.05).

Div. II – Saturday 02-15-03 afternoon

The team title was decided well before the last relay, but it was a nail
bitter as Central Catholic (Lawrence) won in 3:30.58 beating Reading 3:31.65.
The team champion was Reading (41 pts.) just edging Central Catholic (40
pts).

Dartmouth had two defending champions, both winning again. Ryan Bouchard won
the 300 meters in :36.07, while John Doherty had to work harder to beat Chadd
Steinhauser (Westford Academy) as they both broke the meet record. Doherty’s
winning time 1:21.66 was just ahead of Steinhauser’s 1:22.30.

Wade Gauthier was an easy winner in the 1,000 going 2:31.54 and winning by 5
seconds.

Drew Harrington (Oliver Ames, No. Easton) won the two mile in 9:39.56.

Central Catholic also won the 4 x 200 relay in 1:34.44.

Div. IV Sunday 02-16-03 afternoon

East Bridgewater’s team strength in the distance races propelled them to run
away from the other D-IV teams scoring 47 pts. Bedford was second with 33.60.

E.B. placed 1-3 in the mile with Dennis Sheppard the winner (4:35.20) and Tom
Morgan third (4:37.43). They were first in the 4 x 800 (8:37.04). Morgan
also placed third in the H.J. (5’11’) while Brian Morrill was second in the
Shot with a 49’01” toss.

The division thrills were supplied by Foxboro’s Dan Saltzman, Saltzaman ran
:36.67 for the 300 meters in the trials. But in the finals it was all
Saltzman as he broke on top quickly, and kept opening up the yards as he
blistered, no scorched the Reggie Lewis track in a :34.82 meet record time,
(2nd was :37.11), one of the best marks in the U.S. this year.

Dom Uguccioni (Mohawk Trail-Shelburne Falls) won the S.P. 49’05.5”, and
Roscell Lopez-Pitts (Maspee) set a meet record in the Long Jump with a
22’08.25” jump. Lopez-Pitts also placed third in the 600 (1:25.06).

GIRLS

Div. I – Friday, 02-14-03

Cambridge Rindge and Latin won its first title (46 pts. Haverhill 2nd 36 pts)
thanks to a resurrection of senior Sarah Isbitz. Isbitz has had problems
which have been slowly going away. But it was the Isbitz of old tonight as
she won the 1,000 meter run (2:57.39), just barely holding off Silver Lake
sophomore Hannah Rapalee (2:57.96). Isbitz later returned to bring
Cambridge’s 4 x 800 relay team from way back to second with a fast anchor
carry.

Amherst-Pelham Regional controlled the distance events as junior Amber Sayer
cruised to an 11 second victory in the two mile with a solo run 11:19.72.
Sayer almost missed her award ceremony as she went outside to do warm down.
Amherst freshman Allyson Rinderlee was even more in control of the mile as
she went right to the front winning by 22 seconds with her best ever, 5:03.54.

Haverhill senior Natasha Stevenson and Amherst sophomore Mandella
Graves-Fulgham waged a battle in the 300 meters with Stevenson setting a meet
record in :40.13 and Graves-Fulgham second in :40.21. Stevenson’s time was
the 5th best ever by a Mass girl at 300m, while Graves-Fulgham moved to 6th
ever.

Brookline’s Danielle Bolt lived up to her name winning in ;07.19 (2nd
:07.44). Lowell’s Ashley Nolet, a top ranked pole vaulter, won the hurdles
in :08.69. Stephanie Jeffers (Barnstable) won the Shot Put in 40’09.5”

Brockton’s all underclass team broke the record at 4 x 200 running 1:46.72,
while Acton-Boxboro upset Newton North in the 4 x 400 4:08.33 to 4:11.05.

Division III – Saturday, 02-15-03 morning

Bishop Feehan H.S. of Attleboro won the girls title with 40 points.
Holliston was second with 33 pts. Feehan’s victory was lead by Kelly
Chaisson who defended her title in the two mile with an easy victory,
11:38.71. Chaisson later came back anchoring Feehan’s winning 4 x 800 relay
team.

Outstanding performer for the girls was Kara Dickman of Westborough who broke
her own meet record in the Long Jump going 18’ 10” and won the 55m dash in a
quick :07.36. Dickman also a leg on Westborough’s 4 x 200 meter team that
did not place.

Kristen Kakanowski, a junior at Algonquin Regional won the 300 in :41.55.
She is also a top ranked pole vaulter in the area.

Shawna Rossini of Holliton defended her H.J. title clearing 5’06, and later
finished second in the hurdles :08.83.

Div. II – Saturday 02-15-03 afternoon

Steve McChesney’s Newton South girls team [Yep, this is the Oregon
McChesney!] won their first title running away with the meet scoring 59.5
pts., runner up was Central Catholic (Lawrence) 48.

But underclass athletes were the stars. Foremost was Marshfield junior
Ashley Hubbard winning two events, the Long Jump and 300 meters. Hubbard’s
winning jump of 17’09.5” was her best of the year. But her 300 meters was a
thing of beauty. In the 300 trials Ali Amendola (Franklin) inched by Hubbard
at the tape. But there would be no slipping by the the final as Hubbard left
no doubt blasting out to a big lead winning in :39.97 (Amendola 2nd in
:41.65). Hubbard’s time moved her to No. 4 on the Mass AT List putting her
in fast company (Tasha Downing, Allison Culley and Chrsitine Moschella).

Kate Sherman, the Dennis-Yarmouth sophomore won two events. She cleared
5’06”on her first attempt in the H.J. to beat Meghan Sherry (Woburn) 5’04”
and then came back to win the 55m hurdles in :08.70. Sherman also anchored
the runner up D-Y 4 x 400 relay team, coming from 5th to second with a :58.1
anchor. D-Y ‘s 4:08.57 was second in Central Catholic (Lawrence) 4;08.45.

Junior Meredith Leenhouts (Franklin) won her first indoor state meet with a
3:02.08 squeeker over H.J.’er Meaghan Sheery of Woburn (3:02.70). Sherry
literally cleared 5’04” and ran straight from the pit to the starting line
for the 1,000 where 15 seconds later she was engaged in a pitch battle with
Leenhouts. She finished second. Can anyone else jump 5’04” and run 3:02.70
in the space of three minutes?

The distance race of the day was between Oliver Ames senior Sarah Powell and
Lincoln- Sudbury junior Lindsay Donaldson. The race belonged to Donaldson as
she and Powell ran :73.4 and 2:29. Donaldson then pulled away to a two
second advantage at 1320 3:45 and powered home to a victory 5:00.70 to
5:05.73. This is Donaldson’s first year of indoor track while Powell is
coming back from an injury that has sidelined her since the FL x-c finals.
They will meet twice more in the next two weeks and the time should get
faster.

Junior Ashley Davidson (Natick) was a surprise winner over Katy O’Brien
(Oliver Ames) in the two mile 11:33.36 to 11:34.26.

Notre Dame (Hingham) Grace Cunningham joined the 40 foot club with her PR of
40’ 11.5” inches. She upped Reading’s Sue Madden’s 39’ 09.5”toss.

Div. IV Sunday 02-16-03 afternoon

Hopkinton’s great depth won the team title (for the um-teenth time) scoring
72 pts. Second was Marblehead and Weston with 46.

But the show belonged to Bromfield’s Ari Lambie. After finishing second at
Millrose two weeks ago Lambie had not been able to get much training due to
the 16 inches of snow in her home area. She did get to an indoor track for a
couple of workouts and it showed and she destroyed the record book for the
1,000 meter run. Lambie ran 2:48.52 to break records. Ari took charge
from the gun ticking off intermediate times of :65.3 (400), 1:39.2 (600),
2:13.9 (800) and flying home in 2:48.52. (2nd was 3:03.24). Hardly winded
and she broke in a big smile when it was announced that she just run the
nations leading time at 1000 meters; that she had broken Bonnie Yuen’s
(1981) state best (2:49.30); and inked her name in the number three spot on
the all time US list. Later the Stanford bound Lambie anchored her 4 x 800
relay team, taking the baton in 5th place, some 100 meters behind the leader
(Weston). She gave the crowd another show as she zipped a 2:15.1 anchor to
just miss winning. Weston won in 9:58.44 with Bromfield second in 9:58.52.

Hopkinton junior Tiana Riel had another Tiana Riel day. The Hopkinton team
leader won two events, setting two meet records. Riel broke the meet record
in the hurdles running :08.36. Earlier in the day she broke the meet record
in the Long Jump with her personal best of 18’ 01.75”. Riel also had relay
duty, running a 59.4 anchor, on the second place 4 x 400 relay.

Bromfield junior Kristin Ricci lead the two mile from the start winning
easily in 11:35.81.
Eighth grader Kelsey Baltzell (Sutton) won the mile tin 5:25.90; Lauren Hale
(Bishop Connolly/Fall River) burst onto the sprint scene for the first time
winning the 55m dash in :07.46.

Jen Harlow (East Bridgewater) and Julie Regan (Marblehead) waged a High Jump
battle, both jumping 5’06” with Harlow getting the win on misses.

Next week they all come together for the Mass. State Meet. The promise for
more fireworks and top times is in the air.
