7th Amherst Invitational

9/21/02 at Hampshire College
5k - hot, humid, some rough footing - 22 schools

from Arthur Keene

Boys - Girls

Boys

TEAMS:

1) Wachusett (MA) 46, 2) Amherst (MA) 52, 3) Keene (NH) 62.

INDIVIDUALS:

1. Dan Sullivan, Wachusett, 15:53 2) Ian Marcus, Amherst, 15:58 3) Zach
Emerson, Hillsboro-Deering (NH) 16:07

Highlights: Everyone knew that Wachusett would be strong this year but no
one thought they would be this strong as the team from Central MA
overpowered the strongest boys field in the 7 year history of the event. Dan
Sullivan eclipsed the course record by 3 seconds and bettered the time of
last years Invite and State Champ Owen Washburn by 17 seconds and this under
hot and muggy conditions. Sullivan, who was not listed as a pre-season
contender for this year¹s individual MA title must now be regarded as one of
the top boys runners in the state.

Girls

Teams: 1) Keene (NH) 51, 2) Amherst (MA) 53, 3) Notre Dame Prep (MD) 127
Individuals: 1) Amber Sayer, Amherst 18:03 (CR) , 2. Julie Mills, Keene,
18:44, 3. Kristen Rauwderdink, Keene 19:39

Highlights: Amber Sayer of Amherst set a blistering pace, hitting the mile
in 5:21 and the two mile in 11:08 before putting it in cruise control to
breeze to a 41 second victory. Sayer shattered the old course record of
18:31 set by State Champ Lauren Matthews in 1997. Sayer¹s time may be the
fastest (?) HS time in MA so far this season.
