Emporia swept both the boys and girls championships at the Mid-Winter Relays, sponsored by Topeka West High School. The Spartan boys scored 184 points to win the title, with Topeka Seaman 2nd with 155.5 points and Lawrence third with 139.5. The Lady Spartans won with 127.5 points from Topeka Highland Park (108) and Topeka Seaman (106) in the eight team meet.

Emporia's boys were led by distance runners Nick Garcia (1st 800 2:02.35), Michael Knickerbocher (1st 1600 4:36.94) and Shea Camien (1st 3200 9:57.84). Garcia (10:03.64) and Knickerbocher (10:04.86) placed second and third in the 3200, as Emporia placed nine runners in the top ten in that event (no entry limit in this meet).

Trisa Nickoley (four time 5A cross country champ, 10 time state track champion) from Topeka Shawnee Heights ran to 2:16.16 / 5:12.96 wins in the 800 and 1600, and announced she will attend the University of Missouri next year on a track scholarship. Nickoley was challenged by Emporia freshman Layne Moore in both events, as Moore ran 2:17.93 and 5:16.04.
