Pifer, Braffet, Sandburg girls impress

Probably the most dynamic performance of the week was by Edwardsville senior Stephen Pifer. He ran a blazing time of 14:20 on the state meet course (2.97 miles). He ran away from the field in the first 800m and proceeded to win easily. Second place was Ricky Alvarez (Danville, 12th grade) in 14:32, while his twin brother Rey Alvarez was third in 14:41. Pifer will be one to watch at Kenosha in late November.

On the girls side there were two dominating performances. #1 Sandburg beat seven other ranked teams in the state to win the Wheaton North Invitational, which was a flighted meet. They beat #2 Wheaton North soundly, and they deserve some respect from Marc Bloom and the Harrier. They are for real. Also at Peoria (state meet course), Meghan Braffet (Normal West, 12th grade) continued to dominated running 16:58. She is on fire this year not losing yet and winning by 30-45 seconds in all of her races, even though she says she has been taking it easy.
