Hot 3200 meters on track stamp Deak and Barringer as Footlocker Favorites;
Deak out kicks Darin Shearer with 59.7 last lap

Splits by Bryan Sharkey
Ryan Deak’s return to Florida was more than he could have ever
expected.
Saturday night on the newly resurfaced six lane Oak Hall track, Deak
produced the “monster lap” his father had hoped for as be
blew past 2000
Olympic Trials steeplechase qualifier, Darin Shearer, in the final 200m
to
run the second fastest high school time in Florida history, 8:51.65.
Shearer,
bouncing back from a 4:05, 1500m, 8:26, 3000k double Thursday night
at the UF Intramural meet and a 30 mile run on Sunday, shot into the
lead
from the gun clipping off an even paced 67. He continued to maintain
the 67
pace with Deak shadowing him closely. Deak’s splits were 68.4,68.0,67.1,
and
66.9(4:30.4). Just past the 1600m, Shearer began to open some daylight
on
Deak as the tempo began to pick up. Deak’s next laps were 66.9,67.9.
Shearer gained on Deak with every step and looked to be well on his way
to
victory, but Deak, as he has shown so many times before began to look
to his
deep reserves. With the end in sight, he clipped off a 66.4 penultimate
lap.
Shearer aka “quadzilla” powered into the curve, but for the
first time, did
not gain on Deak. As they went down the backstretch, Deak was beginning
to
unwind his potent kick as Shearer gamely looked to his 3:58 miler legs
for
more. With 200m left, Deak got past Shearer and began to accelerate even
more. He sprinted into the curve and blazed home to break the tape in
8:51.65 (59.7 last 400m). Shearer fought hard to catch Deak in the curve,
but
could not summon the speed to close in the final 100m. His time was a
solid
8:53.59.
Behind them, a stream of Floridians took advantage of the cool
conditions
and great competition to run several PR’s. Steven Meyers, a 28
year old, who
came to the race to pace fellow Pensacolan, Eric Mayes, was the best
as he
sprinted past sophomore sensation, Justin Harbor (Bunnell, Flagler Palm
Coast. Yes, Sam Vasquez’s school), to post a 9:17.09. Harbor followed
in a
new PR of 9:18.22. Harbor’s mark was remarkable considering he
ran a
personal best of 4:34 in the frosh mile at AOC just this past June.
In all, 10 of the fifteen runners cracked their PR’s in the first
heat.
The night was not yet done.
Following another PR laden heat won by Jesus
Rojas in 9:27.27, Jenny
Barringer staked her claim as a Footlocker South and National favorite
with
a splendid 10:18.51 effort. Barringer, who only decided Friday
morning to run , made
the two hour trek
north to Gainesville after learning that she would be racing
boys in
the mixed race competition.
The pace was stiff from the beginning as 8th
grader, Ryan Harris led with
sub 75 laps. Harris continued to lead through the 1600m, but
the
quick starting Barringer was not far behind. Running in fourth, she ran
5:08
through the first 1600m. From there, David Paulk and Phillipe Araujo took
the lead.
Barringer
seemed to lose ground over the next two laps,
but with 800m to go, she caught her second wind. She gained on Harris
and
Paul Jorgensen. With 600m to go, she had pulled up on the two as she
looked
to be getting stronger with every stride.
Araujo continued on to his eventual victory, 10:12.22.
Harris and Jorgensen
tried to keep Barringer at bay as she challenged them
on the final lap. With 150m to go, Barringer used her stiff kick to draw
up
on their shoulders, but was unable to pass going into the homestretch.
Harris sprinted home best posting a PR of 10:18.51. Jorgensen was next
in
10:18.80. Barringer was next in an unbelievable 10:18.84! The junior’s
time
was nearly 30 seconds faster than her 10:46c best at AOC in June.
Afterwards,
at the post race awards interview, both Barringer and Deak were thrilled
to run
their best times leading into the Footlocker South and Mid West regionals.
With such quality times, these two will certainly warrant more consideration
as Footlocker National favorites.

Oak Hall High School’s new six lane track in Gainesville, FL will
be the
host for Saturday night’s Florida Miler Club All-Comers Track Meet.
Races
will begin at 6:30pm eastern time. The inaugural event will bring together
several Footlocker hopefuls from Florida, Colorado and North Carolina
who
will looking to sharpen up for the Footlocker South Regional in Charlotte,
NC and the Mid West Regional in Kenosha, WI on Nov. 29, 2003.
Ryan Deak
(Smoky Hill, Aurora, CO) will return to his home state one year
after his first state title (surprisingly, his only high school title)
in
the Florida state 1A cross country championship. He will be challenged,
Darin Shearer, a former Footlocker Finalist(11th in 1991, 15:39), 2000
Olympic Trials steeplechase qualifier(8:28.98 in heat 1 of prelims. DNF
in
finals) and sub 4 minute miler who is training in Gainesville, FL for
the
2004 Olympic Trails while pursuing and engineering degree at UF.
Pace for tonight's 3200m set to go out in 4:30. Darin Shearer ran a
"comfortable" 8:26 for 3k Thursday night at the UF intramural meet(he's
a UF
student) and has said he will take the pacing chores and "pull" Deak.
The night's have been very cool here, sub 60 degrees. It's not common for
Florida distance runners to experience such great conditions.
The six lane track was resurfaced withing the year and is a good surface.
Jenny
Barringer (Oviedo, FL) has lost only one cross country race this year.
She will have a different challenge this time around. Barringer will
be
racing against boys in the mixed race competition. After running an All-Time
Florida best of 16:55 to claim her second 4A state cross country title,
Barringer seems a sure bet to break her personal best of 10:51 for two
miles
set last year at the adidas Outdoor track and field championships. She
posted splits of 5:17 and 10:51 en route to the 16:55 and with 10 boys
with
PR’s between 10:10 and 10:40, she’ll have plenty of company.
The 2k will be a special race as 2A state runner-up, Bryan Sharkey(Miami,
Gulliver Prep) will race against fellow Miamian and NCAA All-American,
Moise
Joseph(Miami Central).
