Deak, Kaltenbach, Denver West boys,
and Smoky Hill girls win again

Smoky Hill CO aces Ryan Deak and Katelyn Kaltenbach swept to victory again. Florida transfer Deak won in 14:59, taking 7 seconds off the course record set in 1994 by Adam Goucher, the standard for Colorado prep runners. Kaltenbach 17:43 won by 44 seconds. US#13 Denver West boys outdistanced Cherry Creek, 78-102. Cherry Creek was also second in the girls race, running 28 points behind Smoky Hill's 40.

Deak was pushed to the record by Thornton sr Bradley Harkrader, who stuck with Deak's hard early pace and took a 20-meter lead after 2 miles. Deak answered the challenge with his own surge at the end. "That guy made my race," Deak told the Rocky Mountain News. "(Without Harkrader's push) I don't think I would have broken the record." Harkrader couldn't match Deak's finishing spurt. "I tried to go and my legs wouldn't," said Harkrader, who nevertheless got a PR at 15:10.

Mohamed Ige 15:48 finished third to pace Denver West.

Smoky Hill had two more girls under 19 minutes (Morgan Schulz and Leah Avila), and coach Greg Weich staked a claim to moving up from #4 in The Harrier national rankings. "There's no other team in the country that can do that up here (at altitude)," Weich told the Denver Post. "They're scary."

Smoky Hill coach Brian Manley said Kaltenbach's easy win was no surprise "after seeing and feeling the speed of Katelyn workouts." Smoky Hill's victory was completed by Morgan Schulz 3rd in 18:29, Leah Avila 5th in 18:41, Erin Stratton 11th in 19:17, and Michelle Wenino 20th in 19:44. Their sixth and seventh runners were Renee Mayer 20:41 and Haylee Jaquez 20:52.
