Special to DyeStat September 19, 2002

With two weeks of races in the books, the nationally-ranked Russellville Cyclones are off and running. Running without Chase Feltner, the Cyclones took a close win over the Conway Wampus Cats, 49-54, at the UALR Open (Hendrix College, Conway, 9/7/2002). The Cyclones had a troubling spread of 2:47 to hold off Conway who posted a respectable 1:19 spread. The following week at the Zero Mountain Races (Ft. Smith, 9/14/2002), Chase Feltner made his 2002 debut and led the Cyclones to an easy 23-47 win in a nine-team race over Tulsa Bishop Kelley. Russellville cut the five-man spread to a more reasonable 1:46.

In Girls action, the Bryant Lady Hornets set the opening pace at the UALR Open (9/7/2002) with a solid 51-68 win over Lake Hamilton in a 13-team race. Bryant overcame Lake Hamilton’s 2-3 finish with a solid 1:21 spread. The same two teams squared off again the following week at the Ouachita Baptist University Invitational (Arkadelphia, 9/14/2002) with similar results except that Tennessee power Houston High School came out with a strong 35-67-89 win. Houston placed their Top 5 in the first eleven finishers with a terrific 44 second spread over the 2.5 mile course. Houston averaged a swift 15:30 for their Top 5 while Bryant clocked a nice 15:55 with Lake Hamilton at 16:20 but with a dangerous 3:20 spread.
