Lenn and Brigham are awesome at Cross Country Challenge!

by Joey Warner

Sophomore Tara Lenn started the 2002 High School season at the Cross-Country Challenge at Municipal Park with a dominating victory in the girls Invitational two-mile race and Junior John Brigham used extreme tenacity to fight back to win the boys Invitational three-mile race.

Tara came into the race knowing that the competition was strong. After an off season surgery she was not sure about her racing strength this early in the season. It did not take Tara very long to take control of a comfortable lead that would give her an impressive victory. Tara finished the course in 11 minutes, 48 seconds to shatter the Meet record and she also set a personal record. The talented runner has a lot of respect for the sport and knows that each week everyone will be aiming for her.

Jenny Thompson of Arab was second in 12:00, Tara Enebak of Auburn was third in 12:02, Elizabeth Wancowicz of McGill-Toolen was fourth in 12:19 and Elena Linn of Lassiter, GA was fifth in 12:39.

Lolly York of Murphy was sixth in 12:42 and freshman Katelyn Simpson of St. Paul’s was ninth in 13:12.
The St. Paul’s girls won the Invitational division with an average time of 13:08 with 43 points while McGill-Toolen was second averaging 13:32 with 73 points. Lassiter, GA was third in 13:42 with 91 points.

In the boy’s race Blake Fertitta of Landmark Christian appeared to be running away with the race but Senior Ryan Lenaghan of McGill-Toolen and John Brigham of St. Paul’s were using teamwork to reel the leader back to them. Brigham made a move on the final half-mile that gave him the lead to keep. Brigham came in well prepared and stuck to his race plan. On the third mile it looked as if John was going to tuck away to keep third however he and Lenaghan made the move on Fertitta before Brigham outlasted both of them. John won with a time of 15:58 while Lenaghan finished in 16:07 and Fertitta was third in 16:14. Alex McWalters of Lassiter, Ga was fourth in 16:30 while Derrick Rogers of Murphy was fifth in 16:49 and Matt Guy of McGill-Toolen was sixth in 16:55.
Lassiter, GA was the boys winner with an average time of 17:10 with 44 points followed by Landmark Christian in 17:18 with 56 points and McGill-Toolen was third in 17:25 with 63 points.
Brittany Wood of Spain Park was the girls open division winner in 13:24. Nikki Pilot of Bayside Academy was second in 13:31 and Jill Carter of Fairhope was third in 13:39. Spain Park was the team winner followed by Bayside Academy and McGill-Toolen.
Jason Butler of Baker was the boys open divison winner in 17:30. Jason Saucier of Daphne was second in 17:37 and Austin Creel of Spain Park was third in 17:43 followed closely by Tyler Lenn of St. Paul’s in 17:44.
Daphne was the boys team winner with 31 points followed by Lassiter, GA with 74 points and St. Paul’s with 117 points.
The two-day Meet attracted about 750 athletes but was smaller than previous years because of scheduling problems. Meet Director Steve Schoenewald declared that the 2003 Challenge of Champions Meet will be bigger and better.
