NTN Regional Rankings Oct 8
four new regional #1 teams this week
The Oct 8 weekly update of the Nike Team Nationals regional rankings has four new regional leaders:
Los Alamos NM girls (joining the Los Alamos boys on top of the Southwest), St. Paul's Mobile AL girls (SE - unbeaten winner of Jesse Owens Classic), Tucker Richmond VA boys (SE - surprise runner-up at Great American ROC), and Flathead Kalispell MT girls (NW - unbeaten winner of the Sunfair over ranked teams). The top two teams in each region at the end of the season will be invited to the new Nike Team Nationals in Portland OR Dec 4. Four national at large teams will also be invited. NTN RANKINGS

Fayetteville-Manlius is "the real deal," says meet director Peter Glavin. NE#2 US#7 Bay Shore NY girls 44 (Hilton 60, Morgantown WV 96). Jared Burdick 15:12 and Laura Cummings 17:13 on soggy 3-mile course pace the team winners.
  • NJ Ed Grant's New Jersey Week - Big winner at Shore Coaches meet, Christian Brothers Academy faces challenge of Fayetteville-Manlius NY at Manhattan
  • PA Steel City Inv - NE#4 ranked Council Rock North boys, missing their #3 and #6 runners, were beaten by the meet hosts from Coatesville, 113-121. North's John Mahoney won the race in 16:20. Kyle Murray, Central Bucks South, was 2nd in 16:24. In the girls race, NE#9 Parkland held off a challenge from Chambersburg, 102-124. Chambersburg's Sarah Morrison won in 19:29.

Before the race, Parkland coach Loretta Dodson told her team: "If Lance Armstrong could win after being on the cover of Sports Illustrated, then we can handle being ranked #9 in the Northeast US." They could.

  • Northwest Week Oct 2 - Sunfair lights up the weekend.
  • WA Sunfair Invitational - Flathead MT girls, Auburn-Riverside WA boys, Brie Felnagle and Jordan McNamara win. Brie Felnagle catches Zoe Nelson, both breaking Sarah Schwald's meet record, but Zoe's NW#2 Flathead MT team beats Brie's NW#1 Bellarmine WA team. Unranked Auburn-Riverside WA boys top host Eisenhower Yakima WA, which was ranked 3rd in the Northeast last week.
Brie Felnagle finishes her brilliant victory over Zoe Nelson at the Sunfair Invitational in Yakima WA with Zoe still up the stretch (off her right arm in photo). Two of the nation's best runners, they both broke Sarah Schwald's course record, finishing in 17:11 and 17:22. (the finish clock apparently malfunctioned). Nelson set a swift pace but could not shake Felnagle, who came on to win in the last mile. Nelson's NW#2 Flathead MT team beat Felnagle's NW#1 Bellarmine WA 22-27 in 7-flight team scoring.

Girls ROC - US#1 Saratoga NY 26 (2 3 6 7 8) crushed the field to leave no doubt that they are the best team in the country this year and, perhaps, any year. Saratoga had their five scorers in the first 14 finishers overall, led by Nicole Blood in 3rd. NE#3 Bethlehem NY 154 (12 18 20 41 63) finished second and SW#1 US#2 Smoky Hill CO, without injured ace Katelyn Kaltenbach, was third with 181 (4 5 39 61 72).
Girls ROC - Warwick Valley NY jr Aislinn Ryan 16:57 broke away from Summit Frisco CO sr Whitney Anderson 17:24 late to win convincingly. Blood 17:31 ran behind the leaders most of the way.
Saratoga - best ever?
Nicole Blood led her team to an overpowering victory that recalled Bingham UT's victory in the inaugural Great American in 1999.

Aislinn Ryan wins - It may have been Saratoga's day for team honors, but Aislinn Ryan was the best runner of the day.
Boys ROC - NE#2 US#10 Cedar Cliff PA 149 (11 19 25 46 48) achieved a balanced win in a wide open race. SE#8 Tucker Richmond VA 173 (3 8 16 33 113) edged SW#2 US#6 Mountain View UT 176 (9 21 41 43 62) for second.
Boys ROC - Hoover AL sr Robert Bedsole 15:14 was an impressive winner, surging in front after the first mile and leading the rest of the way, a winner by 4 seconds over Middletown OH sr Jeff See 15:18. Tucker sr Michael Chapa 15:23 was third. All three were faster than last year's fastest boy, Ryan Deak 15:26.

Boys Seeded Invitational - D'Evelyn CO sr John McGuire 15:24 was a 24-second winner. NE#9 Cherokee NJ 98 was the team winner, followed by LaSalle Cincinnati OH 133, McLaughlin CVI of Canada 136, NE#7 Msgr Farrell NY 142, Warwick Valley NY 152, and Syosset NY 165.
Girls Seeded Invitational - Columbia NY 60 (4 5 13 18 20) was a clear winner, followed by Henderson PA 104 and five more teams only 20-points apart. Individual winner was Cooper City FL sr Jacy Kruzel 18:43.

Super 25 national rankings
The first update of The Harrier editor Marc Bloom's Super 25 national cross country team rankings for the 2004 season has been released. Saratoga Springs NY girls and York Elmhurst IL boys retain the US#1 ranking, but early season results shook up the rest of the lists. Six new teams moved into the boys top 10 -- Fayetteville-Manlius NY, Mountain View UT, Jesuit Tampa FL, Marshall MN, Milford MI, and Cedar Cliff PA. The girls rankings were more steady, with three new teams in the top 10 -- Fountain Valley CA, West Plains MO, and Kingwood TX. Super 25 as of Sept. 20. Next update:Oct 11.

Champlain Valley VT used the comeback over the last mile by #3 runner Emily Olsen and #4 runner Mairead Harris (in red below), who finished 14th and 16th, to hold on for a one-point win over host NE#5 Manchester Central NH. Harris staggered in from 40 meters out, but held on, only losing one place.
  • NJ Cougar Invitational - NE#4 Toms River North holds off a spirited challenge from East

Carroll Southlake's Kevin Ondrasek won his second straight major invitational in 15:51 5k. US#9 Kingwood handled the girls field, despite a 1-2 finish by SO#3 Carroll Southlake's Walker and Upshaw.

  • Midwest Week Sep 25 - Facing their first major test of the season and running their first string together for the first time, US#1 MW#1 York Elmhurst IL boys roll MW#4 Palatine IL 27-79 in Palatine's own invitational. York had the first three finishers, plus 8th and 13th.

  • Heartland Week Sep 25 - Mega Meet Week in the Heartland! Liberty MO boys win Griak; West Plains sweeps Hancock Inv; fr Laura Roxberg wins third installment of crosstown Blue Valley KS rivalry with sr Jana Gwinn.
  • MN Roy Griak Invitational - HL#2 Liberty MO topples HL#1 Marshall MN in Gold division. Elizabeth Yetzer loses by 1 second to Krista Eckert, but Yetzer's HL#9 Lakeville MN beats Eckert's HL#10 Roosevelt Sioux Falls SD by four points, 166-170. Roosevelt DesMoines IA sr Kiel Uhl wins boys race.

  • MT Mountain West Classic - Missoula - Zoe Nelson wins by 75 seconds over Megan O'Reilly in 17:00 3m, breaking her 2002 course record and leading the US#18 NW#3 Flathead Kalispell girls to the team win with 62 points (1 3 7 9 42) over Bozeman 170. Boys winners were North Central WA, beating NW#8 Lewis and Clark WA, and Williston's Jory Zunich 15:09.

US#3 Royal Simi Valley CA boys beat US#4 Jesuit Portland OR with NW#5 Mead WA and CA#3 Don Lugo close in a 19-point blanket for the top four teams. CA#4 Murrieta Valley CA girls were decisive winners over US#13 Jesuit Portland OR, 77 to 118.
