Two US#1 marks in NY sections: Nicole Blood 3000m and Bay Shore girls 4x800. James Strang and Andrew Bumbalough duke it out in Tennessee. Victor Gras breaks MA division record. Two US#1 marks (Baldwin 23.15, Nunnaly 24-11.5) in California's super tough Southern Section Masters. Three records set on PA state meet Day 1. Sunni Olding has 4-gold birthday present. Jocelyn White 172-2 DT US#1 in New Jersey groups. Trisa Nickoley triple gives her record of 17 gold medals in Kansas state meet. Zoe (the Zephyr) Nelson flies and Toni Qunell gets seven golds in Montana state meet. Tiffany Maskulinski 13-3.5 PV makes it three US#1 marks in New York sections. Storvick, Heath run torrid 800 in Minnesota.
California Sectional action is hot
2 more US#1 marks in CA - Jasmine Baldwin 23.15, Rashaad Nunnaly 24-11.5 - Baldwin beats Shalonda Solomon twice
Bishop Amat sprint star Jasmine Baldwin (left, Dave Casper photo ) tops Long Beach Poly's Shalonda Solomon twice in two hours at the CIF-SS Masters Meet! First she claimed a wind-aided (+2.3) 11.43-11.44 photo-finish triumph in the 100, then ran down Solomon to nail the 200 in a legal (+0.2) 23.15-to-23.17 decision. The deuce clocking is a 2004 national leader! The other big shocker here was Dominguez sprint star Lionel Larry (10.52/20.73 legal PRs this year) pulling up lame at 70 meters while leading the 100! He later was forced to scratch the 200 as well with the apparent pulled hamstring. Up in the northern part of the state, Sheldon's Rashaad Nunnally belted out a nation-leading 24-11.50 (+1.3) in the long jump at the SJS Finals! [Rich Gonzalez, DyeStatCal]
Brittany Daniels 44-0, David Gettis 46.39, Dorsey 3:11.45
Brittany Daniels of Merrill West, who has had a few big fouls in recent weeks, finally unleashed at the CIF-Sac Joaquin Section Finals on Thursday night. Try 44-8 on for size! Yes, she was aided by a +4.3 mps wind, but also had a wind legal (+2.0) 44-00, good for #3 on the all-time prep legal list and US#1 this year!
Also on Thursday night, David Gettis and Dorsey High provided the fireworks in the Southern part of the state! Gettis won the 400m at the L.A. City Section Finals in 46.39... and then anchored the 4x400 to a nation-leading 3:11.45 !!!

Alan Webb's 3:35.71 1500m
gets "gorilla" off his back

May 22, 2004, Carson CA, Home Depot Invitational -- High school mile record holder Alan Webb returns to form after 2 "rough" years trying to live up to the celebrity of breaking Jim Ryun's record at 3:53.43 as a senior at South Lakes Reston VA high school.
" I didn’t choose to have that burden [of being a high school star and the “future of the mile”]," Webb told USATF after today's race. "As much as I said I didn’t care what people thought, it’s still there in the back of your mind. It’s made me a strong person, runner and family member.” On getting the “monkey off his back” with the win, Webb said “I always thought it was a gorilla, a gorilla with claws scratching at my face. A monkey is a lot smaller.”
Today's time was a PR for Webb (3 seconds faster than his en route time in the HS record mile), #2 in the world this year, and it met the Olympic A Standard, meaning he can run in the Olympics in August if he is in the top four at the US Olympic Trials at Sacramento next month.
“I knew beforehand that I could run a time like that," Webb said. "I ust didn’t know it would come this early in the season. It’s huge. I felt really good out there. The rabbit did a great job. … It’s been a rough couple of years. It’s been hard to be patient. I was not used to not winning. It was really tough. Today was the day it came together. I can move on now."
