  • Teekay TC (Wilson Long Beach CA) 3:44.40 4x400 US#1, less than 2 seconds off Wilson's national record 3:42.47 in 1997.
  • Poly Long Beach CA jr Jasmine Lee upstages Allyson Felix in "fastest 200 ever", 23.55 to 23.57, with another Poly junior, Shalonda Solomon, third in 23.98. Lee and Felix are US#2 and US#3 all time behind Sanya Richards' record 23.22 last year. Lee, Felix, and Solomon are 1-2-3 in the US this season. There were five more girls under 25 seconds. Lee came to Simplot as #3 on her team and left as US#2 all time.

MD State Meet
The Eastern Seaboard snow storm wiped out the Maryland state meet scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at the PG Sportsplex, Landover MD. The meets have been set back a week:
2A-1A and 3A-2A: Monday Feb 24 at 3 pm.
4A-3A: Tuesday Feb 25 at 4 pm.

Ari Lambie's 2:48.52 1000m is US#3 all time
Lambie's splits: 65.3 (400), 1:39.2 (600), 2:13.9 (800) John Carroll's report:
"Ari finished hardly winded and she broke in a big smile when it was announced that she just run the nation's leading time at 1000 meters; that she had broken Bonnie Yuen’s (1981) state best (2:49.30); and inked her name in the number three spot on the all time US list. Later the Stanford bound Lambie anchored her 4 x 800 relay team, taking the baton in 5th place, some 100 meters behind the leader (Weston). She gave the crowd another show as she zipped a 2:15.1 anchor to just miss winning. Weston won in 9:58.44 with Bromfield second in 9:58.52."

2 Home Schoolers set US#1 marks
Chantelle Dron 2:09.22 US#1 - Boston University is becoming a favorite venue for the New Hampshire home school sophomore. She has run the three fastest high school 800 meters in the country this year, all at B.U. Today (2/15) she ran second against college runners for her fastest time of the year, with splits of 31.7, 32.7, 32.8, and 32.6.
Josh McDougal 8:14.10 US#1 - Peru NY junior shaves 5 seconds off his US#1 3000m mark finishing 8th in an open race. In another section, sophomore brother Jordan McDougal ran 8:49.02 3000m.
Taft CT sr Marisa Ryan was 14th in the mile in 5:00.69.

Armory Collegiate Invitational

The high school relays at the USA Nationals last year were a huge hit, so the Armory officials have added high school relays (see entries below) to the big Armory Collegiate Games this weekend in New York. High School mile record holder Alan Webb will return to the scene of his indoor record sub-4:00 mile to run in the New York Road Runners Club Challenge Cup open mile at 4:45 pm Saturday.

LSU freshman Kelly Willie, last year's fastest prep at 400 meters, led qualifiers in his specialty at 46.78. LSU jr Muna Lee 23.18 led women's 200 meter qualifiers (Miki Barber 23.84). Rice jr Allison Beckford 53.76 led women's 400 meter qualifiers.
I Left My Heart -- at the Armory
Noted track writer and TV consultant Walt Murphy lives in New York and loves the New York Armory. But duty takes him to Arkansas this weekend for the Golden Spike tour stop, so he will miss the Armory Collegiate Games. He writes about his feelings.

High school mile record holder Alan Webb met the press Thursday afternoon in a telephone conference call in conjunction with his race this Saturday in the New York Road Runners Club Challenge Cup open mile at the New York Armory. RCA Dome Track Reborn
INDIANAPOLIS IN 2/10/03 -- The Indianapolis RCA Dome indoor track that saw 39 still standing NCAA Division I and Division II records was dismantled in 1999 and put in storage. Now, a coalition of Indiana organizations led by Butler University coach Joe Franklin have taken the 200-meter banked Mondo track out of storage and put it to use in a temporary facility at Plainfield IN west of the Indianapolis Airport. Several high school and college meets are being held this season. Story of the salvage effort. See how a "Track In a Box - some assembly required" was transformed from 11 semi-tractor trailer loads of equipment into a functioning indoor track.

Nike Sprint Summit
9-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis will be there
This year's Nike Indoor Championships at Landover MD March 14-16 have a new attraction which the sponsors call "the sprint clinic of the future.". The Nike Sprint Summit clinic with Nike athletes and leading sprint coaches will be held Friday March 14 from 7:30 to 10 pm. Admission is free to athletes registered for NIC, $10 to others. Nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis heads the list of Nike athletes who will participate. Coaches include 2004 Olympic staff member Orin Richburg; Colorado Flyers coach Tony Wells; Houston Westbury girls coach Rose Brimmer; and Russell Bates, Winslow Township NJ High School.
“King Carl” Lewis said he is looking forward to the Summit. “It was a big deal to go to these kinds of meets,” he said, referring to the Nike Indoor Championships.

Ballou sweeps team titles - freshman Andria Smallwood carries Ballou girls to 4-point win over defending champion Wilson with a 300/500/1000 triple on very slippery wooden floor in 43.14, 1:20.45, and 3:12.43. Ballou boys recaptured the title from Wilson to make it four out of five years for Ballou. Ballou built up a huge lead to hold off Wilson's late charge (1-2-3 in 300m and a sweep of the closing 4x800 and 4x400 relays). Wilson's Marco Aguilar doubles in 38.08 300m and 1:10.74 500m.

Ryan Deak 4:11.65 and Courtney Hall 5:19.88 win HS miles
Maclay Tallahassee jr Ryan Deak broke open the race midway and won by 8 seconds over Vanguard Ocala sr Steve Hassen. Deak told "My whole race plan was to nail the third lap, and not worry about the fourth. Because I know that I'm still pumping in all these miles, and (I knew) my mileage would pay off in the last quarter and I'd be able to hang on." It was the second fastest HS boys mile in the country this year (Mike McGrath OR 4:10.87). In the girls race, Bishop Kenny Jacksonville teammates Courtney Hall and Kelly Marshall finished 1-2
