Girls Junior Mile Field Announced - from Barbara Huebner, Boston Indoor Games

BOSTON (Jan. 18) – Danielle Tauro (Manahawkin, NJ), Brittany Sheffey (Bellport, NY), Colleen Weatherbee (West Yarmouth, MA) and Lindsey Carson (Ontario, CAN) highlight a field of 14 top middle-distance runners set to compete in the third-annual Girls’ Junior Invitational Mile at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games on Jan. 27, organizers announced today.

Since the Reebok Boston Indoor Games began in 1996, a total of 90 Olympic and World Championship medalists have competed at the meet, which has also played host to four World Records and eight American Records. Run for the first time in 2005, the Girls’ Junior Invitational Mile has quickly become one of the highlights of the event, and of the entire indoor track season in the U.S.

Tauro, the 2006 USATF Junior National Mile champion, is a seven-time New Jersey State Overall champion and the defending champion of the Millrose High School Mile. Sheffey, a six-time New York State Champion, has run the fastest indoor mile (4:54.09) in the country so far this season, while Weatherbee is a four-time Massachusetts state champion and runner-up last year at Nike Indoor Nationals. Carson is the 2006 Canadian Junior Gold Medalist at 3000 meters. All are seniors.

They will be joined by Catherine White (Roanoke, VA), a 10-time Virginia state champion; Alexandra Kosinski (El Dorado Hills, CA), the fourth-fastest miler in the nation outdoors in 2006; Caitlin Lane (Greenwich, NY), a two-time Foot Locker Cross Country Championships qualifier; Christine Babcock (Irvine, CA), the 2006 California state champion at 1600m; and Siobhan Breagy (Exeter, RI), the New England Outdoor 800-meter champion last year.

Also competing are Keely Maguire (Georgetown, MA), the two-time Boston Globe Div. 2 Cross Country Runner of the Year; Jillian Smith (Manahawkin, NJ), the 2006 Nike Outdoor Nationals Freshman Mile champ; Tori Pennings (Warwick, NY), who has the sixth-fastest indoor mile in the country this season as a junior; Jillian Rosen (Dallas, TX), the 2006 Texas state 5A cross country champion; and Ashley Higginson, the Penn Relays 3000m champion last year and anchor of the 2006 national 4xMile relay champions.

The field for the Boys’ Junior Invitational Mile was released earlier this week.

The 12th-annual Reebok Boston Indoor Games, the first stop in USA Track & Field’s Visa Championship Series, will be held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center at Roxbury Community College, 1350 Tremont St., beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 27. Information and tickets, at $60, $40 and $20, are now available on-line at www.BostonIndoorGames.com or by calling 1-877-TIX-TRAC. The Visa Championship Series returns to the Reggie Lewis  Center Feb. 24-25 for the AT&T USA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
