Goodman wins 2nd, 3rd golds in 200 and 4x100

Beach, Whitt, Pressley also win, but Goodwin and Jelmini take tough losses

At left, Chalonda Goodman cruised through her 200 prelim before letting loose in the final.  Above, Curtis Beach - interviewed during Day 1 by the NSSF's Paul Limmer, needed his 1500 chops on Day 2 to finally pull away from Gray Horn in the decathlon.  Photos by Joy Kamani, NationalScholastic.org

 Saturday
  • After cruising to a heat 3 win that was far off the prelims leader, World Junior leader Chalonda Goodman (Newnan GA) continued her long string of championships at different levels with a 23.08 200 finals victory (+1.3w), completing a 100/200 double.  Tasha Allen (Milwaukee North WI), the prelims leader at 23.92 (+0.2) was 2nd with a fine 23.51
  • Curtis Beach (Albuquerque Academy NM) finally pulled away from tough teammate Gray Horn (U of Florida), 7,377 to 6,982.  Beach had a Day 1 lead after winning the HJ and 400, but saw Horn chip away in the 110H and DT.  They tied for the PV win, but then Beach narrowly topped Horn in the JT (even though they were well back of the leaders) and rolled in the 1500, as he always does
  • Jack Whitt (Norman North OK) took the PV in 17-00.75, with teammate Michael Arnold (Idaho State) 2nd with 16-08.75
  • Maya Pressley (Coconut Creek FL) won the HJ at 5-09.25, topping US teammate Krystle Schade (U of Alabama) on misses
  • Sarah Andrews (The Woodlands TX) and Aisling Cuffe (Cornwall NY) went 1-2 in the 5000 with 16:42.38 and 16:47.45
  • The Team USA women - including preps Goodman, Allen, and Jessica Davis, along with collegian Amber Purvis - grabbed a 44.09 4x100 relay win, just 0.80 off the WJR.  Jamaica was 2nd at 44.96
  • The Team USA men - with collegians Keyth Talley, D'Angelo Cherry, Trevante Rhodes, and Marcus Rowland - closed out Day 2 with the 4x100 win in 39.06, just .40 off the WJR. Brazil was 2nd in 39.64
  • 2008 World Junior champ and WJ#1 Marquise Goodwin (Rowlett TX) suffered a tough upset loss to Panama's Jhamal Bowen, 25-10.75 (+1.3w) to 25-09.25 (+1.2w).  Bowen was 9th at World Jrs last year, but was ranked #5 in the World coming in
  • World Junior #2 and HS USR-setter Anna Jelmini (Shafter CA), coming off a tough shot put win, had an even tougher battle in the discus and lost for the first time this year, taking 2nd with180-02.  Brazil's Andressa Morais got her upset winner of 181-04 on her 2nd throw. Erin Pendleton (Woodmere OH) was 3rd at 157-06
  • Parker Stinson (Cedar Park TX) was 3rd (31:48.35) and Anthony Solis (Chico State) 5th (32:33.79) in the 10k, behind winner Victor Aravena of Chile (31:01.70)
  • Trevor Barron (Bethel Park PA) was a strong 4th in the 10k walk at 42:50.51, with teammate Matthew Forgues (Boothbay Region ME) 9th at 48:42.58
  • Reggie Wyatt (La Sierra CA) and William Wynne (U of Florida) won their heats of the 400H in 50.68 and 49.89 (Pan Am record), respectively.  Jehue Gordon, from the host country, was 2nd behind Wynne at 51.19, but is the WJ leader at49.45.  Wynne and Wyatt are ranked 2-3
  • In women's 800 prelims, Laura Roesler (Fargo South ND) qualified for the final with 3rd in heat 1 (2:13.32), while teammate Chanelle Price (U of Tennessee) won heat 2 in 2:08.04
  • Dalilah Muhammad (Southern Cal) and Turquoise Thompson (Gardena Serra CA) both made the 400H final for Team USA.  World Junior leader Muhammad won H1 in 59.42, while Thompson took 2nd in H2 at 1:00.40, behind WJ #5 Nikita Tracey 58.66
  • Day 1 of the heptathlon ended with WJ #2 Vanessa Spinola of Brazil leading at 3421, followed by Team USA's Ryann Krais (UCLA) at 3319. Krais won the 100H (13.93, +1.4w) and HJ (5-09.25), but Spinola won the shot and 200.  Rebecca Neville (Merrillville IN) is 6th with 2923
  • Keyth Talley of Team USA (North Texas State) was 2nd in the 200 (20.78, +1.4w) behind Nickel Ashmeade JAM (20.40)
  • Team USA 800 runners Joseph Abbott (Washington State) and Dylan Ferris (Stanford) won their 800 prelims in 1:52.30 and 1:53.64, respectively
  • Sean Soderman (Appalachian State) was 2nd (9:05.28) and Joseph Whelen (Hamburg NY) 6th (9:24.53) in the 3k St, trailing winner Mattias Wolter of Canada (9:05.28)
