Erik Kynard cleared 7-0.25 on his first try to put away the Nike Indoor Nationals crown.
The junior from Rogers High School (Holland, Ohio) was one of three men left at the height, along with Tomarris Bell (Rochester, N.Y.) and Chris Copeland (Suffolk, Va.).
All three had made 6-10.25. Kynard cleared the bar right off the bat, while Bell and Copeland struggled. And when neither cleared the height, Kynard had the win.
Kynard came to the NIN with a best of 7-3.75 and had four of the year's top five prep indoor marks. Copeland came in with a 7-0 clearance.

Victoria Victorious, part 2

It was Victoria Victorious – again.
Twenty-seven hours after Rhode Island’s Victoria Flowers
won the NIN weight throw, NIN produced another victorious
Victoria, Lucas of Midland, Texas.
High jump champion Lucas would have liked going higher
than her winning leap of 5-9 ¼, and had the courage to ask the
bar be raised to the meet record height of 6-1 ¼.
“My first two attempts (at 6- 1 ¼) were pretty good, pretty
close,” she said. “The first one, I just hit the bar with the back
of my leg, the second one I hit with my heel. The third one? I
guess it was pretty much like the first two.’’
The Midland senior has an outdoor best of 6-1 achieved at
the 2007 Texas state meet, staged at the University of
Texas/Austin stadium.
That will become her home venue when she starts as a
communications major at the U. of T. next fall.
Three leapers cleared 5-7 ¼ and went 2-3-4 on the
countbacks – the Mustangs Track Club’s Saniel Atkinson,
Booker T. Washington’s DeShana Briggs, and Birmingham’s
Alexandra Morgan.
Hailey, Idaho’s Lisa Bernhagen has held the national record of 6-3 since 1984. The meet record is of more recent vintage –
Sheena Gordon’s 6-0 jump for McDowell High/Erie, Pa. in
2002.
