US freshman class record.

Whenever Nicholas Vena steps into the shot put cage, the fans hold their breath in anticipation of witnessing something unforgettable. It is not every day you see high schoolers launching the shot 66 feet, but what makes this even more unique is Nicholas's age. The New Jersey native is only 14 years old and a freshman at Morristown High School. He already rewrote the record books earlier this season, breaking the national freshman record several times, ending up with a toss of 66'0.75 at the NJ Meet of Champions three weeks ago.
Today he got right into business, establishing the lead quickly with a 63-footer. But it was on his fifth throw when he wowed the crowd with a toss of 66'7.25, improving on his freshman national record by six and a half inches. He won the national title by more than three feet.
After the competition Vena said this was his first national level meet, but he did not feel much pressure going into it. He added, "I did not have any specific goals for today, whether for place or distance, but I just wanted to do well." The freshman sensation said the national title means more to him than improving his record fo the fourth time. When we asked if he feels pressure from other great throwers, he said that does not bother him because they "encourage him to throw further."
This encouragement helped Vena quite a bit today because Georgia standout Wes Wright closed strong with a personal best throw of 63'6 on his last toss to grab the silver before shooting for the gold in Sunday's weight throw.
As for his goals for the outdoor season and the future, Vena simply said "whatever comes, it will come." Winning the NSIC title four years in a row would be unprecedented, but he knows that "there will be a lot of good competition in the future."

Analysis: Chambers heaved a four-foot best to outlast Canadian Labonte and teammate Jordan. The very competitive field was vocal throughout the competition as the top 12 eclipsed the 40-foot mark.
