It was a New Mexico show here in New York as the two prep standouts from the Land of Enchantment crossed the country to enchant the Big Apple fans with their close battle for the national crown all the way to the finish. Curtis Beach and Dan Gooris, both from Albuquerque, started off with decent performances in the hurdles, running 8.47 and 8.91, which gave them respectively 867 and 766 points and places in the middle of the pack.

Beach then took a solid third in the long jump with a leap of 20'10.75, which gave him 668 points while Gooris took fifth in the event with a 20'9.25, worth 659 points. That put them both within striking range of the leaders, and after the shot put they were already in the first two spots. Beach threw 44'3.5, good for 698 points while Gooris launched a great toss of 49'0.5, worth 768 points, which put him within 40 points of his hometown rival.

Soon after, Gooris, who is a 16-foot vaulter, used his vertical skills to clear 6'6.25 in the high jump, good for 794 points and claiming a 40-point lead over Beach who only cleared 6-2.75, worth 714 points. To make up the deficit, Beach would have to beat the fellow New Mexican by nearly 4 seconds in the 1000m. Amazingly, he did just that, running 2:35.96 to Gooris's 2:39.54, and he outscored him in this event 919 to 879.

The end result was that both gentlemen totaled 3866 points, and the tie had to be broken by the number of events won head-to-head. Beach won here over Gooris by a margin 3 to 2, again with the 1000m being the decisive win. But both of them will fly back to New Mexico with a feeling of a job well done, and we are sure to see many close battles between them for years to come.
