The calendar might say otherwise, but the fans watching the seeded heat of the mile were double-checking if it was 2007 again. Just like last year, former New Yorker Charles White flew here from Colorado to win this event convincingly over a seemingly very competitive field. Once again he used his superb leg speed to blast away his rivals on the last lap and grab another gold. In a carbon copy of last year’s strategy, he let others set the pace while he sat on their shoulders, readying himself to attack. Cory Leslie, who was the only other entrant to have run a sub-4:14 this winter, took out the race hard and led for the first 1500 meters with White on his heels. Leslie’s splits were 30.8, 1:04.0 (33.2), 1:36.1 (32.1), 2:08.8 (32.7), 2:40.9 (32.1), 3:13.1 (32.2), and 3:43.6 (30.5). On the back straightaway of the last lap White unleashed his ferocious kick, flying by Leslie and quickly pulling away to victory in 4:11.77, two and a half seconds faster than last year. He completed his last lap in merely 28.1 seconds. This was the third fastest indoor mile in the nation this year. Oliver Bernard captured the silver with a late kick in 4:13.21 while Leslie faded to third in 4:13.49. After the race White said, “I wanted to see how I felt going into the race. I wanted to get either the win or a personal best – fortunately I got both. I knew Leslie would push the pace in the middle, so I knew I just had to stay with him and use my leg speed to win. I felt very smooth on the last 200 even when cranking out that 28-second lap.” The Texas-bound senior said his outdoor goals include a 4:06 mile, a 1:50 for 800m, and an attempt at winning the mile at Nike outdoor nationals. Interestingly, only two hours later White would attempt another shot at a medal in the 800m, but he was too exhausted from the mile to be a factor in that event and finished back in the pack. Danielle Menlove (8) Sandy, UT 4:55.54 [70.5, 2:24.3, 3:38.8] Summary: McGee now a two-time champion was more than satisfied with the win but admitted something more: “I knew some of the other girls were strong but I ran my race. I was hoping to run in the 4:40 but I’m pleased with my effort.” In the early stages of the race, it appeared as though McGee was content on letting 8th grade prodigy Menlove provide entertainment but later admitting, “I'd never seen her before and I didn’t know if she could keep up the pace.” McGee began to make her move after a still somewhat crowded field at the half-mile. Jeanne Mack (Rhode Island) was in the mix as well (2:25.4) but faded over the last quarter-mile. McGee opened up a bigger gap the last three circuits, leaving Reese and Menlove to fight for second. The early pace seemed to wear on Menlove as she did not have any more fight the last 50m, yielding the runner up position to Reese. The race was without Alex Banfich (Indiana) and Sarah McCurdy (New York). Banfich ran a grueling 5k on Friday and McCurdy ran the 800.
