Southern showdown

by Matt Soja, DyeStat correspondent

With Wayne Davis, the top high hurdler in the nation, opting to go to the Nike meet instead, this would be a showdown between North Carolinian Spencer Adams, who had run 7.24 for 55m hurdles (US #2), and Georgian William Wynne, whose seasonal best for the full 60 was 7.73, also US #2. Adams set the standards high, running 7.82 in Friday's qualifying heats and 7.73 in Saturday's semifinals, tying Wynne's second best time in the nation. His rival from Georgia was about one tenth of a second slower in each round but his 7.84 was the second best semi time, meaning the two would run next to each other in the final in lanes 4 and 5.

In Sunday's final Adams showed his domination of the event, winning decisively in 7.75, while Wynne had to lean for second to edge Barrett Nugent with both running 7.89. For the second year in a row Wynne had to be satisfied with a silver medal. Later on Sunday he would also place fifth in the 400 meter final.

After the race Adams said about his rivalry with Wynne, "we have raced many times before, which gave me a lot of motivation. Last year he beat me at Nike outdoor nationals in 400m hurdles, but I edged him out for silver in the 110. I did not really run indoor before this year, but I have no preference between indoor or out. I am really looking forward to the outdoor season to race Wynne again and especially Davis. I would really like to win the state 110m hurdles title against him."

California showdown

1. Vashti Thomas Sr. San Jose, CA 8.42
2. Julian Purvis Sr. Oakland, CA 8.49
3. Dahlys Marshall Sr. San Jose, CA 8.64

Summary:  A California sweep was pretty much in order based on pre-meet seedings and then preliminary results.  The trio did not disappoint.

A clean final got off well without a scratch.

Thomas did as expected in winning a close race to rival J. Purvis.   She did not touch a single hurdle despite not having the best technique in the world.

Janice Jackson (New York) had an opportunity to break up the California sweep but did not close out the last hurdle to the finish line.  Still, all eyes were on Thomas the entire weekend because of a possible triple crown.

Thomas was noticeably excited afterwards in picking up another win (won the LJ on Friday).  Said Thomas of her win: “I’m pretty relieved it’s over.”  Now, it’s on to the TJ…

Vashti Thomas Sr. San Jose, California 8.35
Julian Purvis Sr. Oakland, California 8.41
Dahlys Marshall Sr. San Jose, California 8.68

Analysis: Thomas blazed her heat and the field for the #9 all-time further cementing her serious quest
to add the hurdles to her deep trophy case. Thomas dropped a torrid effort despite having to compete
in the long jump final. California rivals Purvis and Marshall threaten to make it a sweep with solid heat winners.
