Donn Cabral CT 14:44.16, Chelsea Ley NJ 17:03.79

by Matt Soja, DyeStat correspondent

After dominating the Northeast region during cross country season, Glastonbury CT senior Donn Cabral has not run any indoor races, but his one and only appearance under the roof of the Armory was expected to be successful. Last month he fared poorly at the USATF cross country meet because of illness, so this race would serve as some sort of redemption and confidence booster for the Connecticut harrier.

Cabral claimed his stake to the national title right from the gun. On the first few laps he and Texan Zachary Ornelas controlled the pace and gradually pulled away from the pack. The Glastonbury star had run 15:09 for the 5000m distance on the hills of Van Cortlandt Park in the fall, so hitting sub-3 minute kilometers on the Armory speedway was not too difficult for him.
As shown by his splits at the bottom of this article, he set an impressively even pace, slowly but surely opening a gap on tiring Ornelas. After two miles it was a 2-second separation between the twp leaders, but it quickly grew to several seconds, and with 5 laps to go it became apparent that Cabral's only remaining nemesis was the clock. With some kick left on the last kilometer, he stopped it at 14:44.16, the fifth fastest indoor time in high school history.

Cabral said his winter training had consisted mostly of strength and mileage, with speedwork de-emphasized. After the USATF debacle and numerous illnesses during the winter, all he wanted today was a "confidence booster." Cabral added, "I though that the indoor national record of 14:29 is a little soft, so I dreamed of getting a shot at it'," but he admitted it was difficult to
accomplish leading the entire race and lapping almost the entire field. This was his first 5000m on the track, inside or out.

Asked about his outdoor plans, Cabral said "I will give the USATF meet another shot in June - this time probably running the 10,000m." Interestingly, the national champion might not be able to race at Penn Relays as he is going on a school exchange trip Russia for two weeks in early April and is unsure of how it would affect his conditioning.

Ornelas held on to finish second in 15:07.49. The Cedar Park junior is originally from New Mexico, but his family's military background assures him frequent changes of location. He ran at this meet last year, finishing 8th in 15:37, followed by a 15:18 at the outdoor Nike meet. Thus his time today was a major personal best, and he was very satisfied. Asked about his strategy, he replied, "I just wanted to run with Cabral, since I knew he was the favorite, and stay with him for as long as possible." He succeeded in that task for 15 laps and then hung on to claim silver.

Here is what Ornelas said about his goals for this outdoor season: "going into it, I wanted to run 9:20 and 4:20, but I've already accomplished that as we have already had 3 outdoor meets in Texas. So now I want to hit maybe 9:10 and 4:10 and then run under 15:00 for 5000m at Nike. However, I am mostly a steeplechaser, and I was invited to run it at the Great Southwest meet in New Mexico, where I would like to break the meet record of 6:17 for the 2000m steeple (at altitude). It is a really good opportunity to run in front of my family, as I am originally from New Mexico."

Cabral's splits: 34.1, 1:10.7, 1:45.9, 2:21.8, 2:57.9, 3:33.9, 4:09.2, 4:44.6, 5:19.7, 5:55.8, 6:31.8, 7:06.2, 7:42.0, 8:17.7, 8:53.3, 9:29.2, 10:04.4, 10:39.4, 11:14.7, 11:49.3, 12:24.5, 13:00.3, 13:35.1, 14:10.2, 14:44.2

Each 200m was: 34.1, 36.6, 35.2, 35.9, 36.1, 36.0, 35.3, 35.4, 35.1, 36.1, 36.0, 34.4, 35.8, 35.7, 35.6, 35.9, 35.2, 35.0, 35.3, 34.6, 35.2, 35.8, 34.8, 35.1, 34.0

Each 1000m was: 2:57.9, 2:57.9, 2:57.5, 2:56.0, 2:54.9

Chelsea Ley So. Woolwich, NJ 17:03.79
Heather Stephens Sr. Ridgefield, Ct 17:24.66
Alexandria Banfich Sr. Culver, In 17:27.75

Analysis: Ley led from the gun and never trailed a single lap.  The dimunitive sophomore toured the early circuits with Stephens and Banfich as they quickly broke away from the field.  The early 400m splits were reminiscent of a solid threshold workout: 77.5, 2:38.4, 4:00.0, 5:22.6.  Ley opened up a slight gap at 2k and widened more at 3200 (10:57).  Thereafter, her coach began shouting and demanding her to give 40 second laps.  She nearly responded with :41-42 efforts the final mile.
