Dominant Dynizzle (North Penn)
gets a Pennsylvania state record

by Matt Soja, DyeStat correspondent

The biggest change in this year's NSIC schedule was moving the 4x800m relay from its traditional spot as the first event on Sunday morning to one of the last spots in the program in the middle of the afternoon. The premise was that this adjustment would improve the athletes' performances and allow more fans to see the exciting battles of best middle distance relays in the country.

It was a success on both counts, as the spectators were treated to a great race. Pine Bush NY won the unseeded section in 7:58.70, but the fastest heat had several teams who had already run faster than that this year, including Kellenberg NY which had run a 7:47.80 and North Penn PA (running as Dynizzle Track Club), which won their indoor state meet in a scorching 7:48.99 and was looking to finally win this event after narrowly losing to Don Bosco last year.

But the early leaders were Motor City speedsters from Michigan, leading off in 1:57.2 and establishing a 1.5-second lead over Somers NY and Jenkintown PA. They also led throughout the second leg, reaching halfway point in 3:54.9, but the shuffle behind them resulted in local favorites Monsignor Farrell from Staten Island briefly taking the second spot with Dynizzle catching up to the lead pack very quickly after being far in the back on the leadoff.

The last two legs were an all-Dynizzle show , as senior Stephen Franks overtook Motor City on second lap of third leg and handed off to anchor Zach Montijo in 5:54.2, two seconds ahead of late-charging Warwick Valley. Montijo ran a solo anchor leg and was never seriously challenged, bringing the baton across the line in 7:47.48, a new US #3 this winter and a Pennsylvania indoor state record.

Dynizzle's splits were: Brian Quintrell 2:01.0, Justin Bookheimer  1:56.2, Franks 1:55.2, and Montijo 1:55.1

Motor City came back to second spot with 7:52.08, and Warwick Valley was third in 7:54.53.

After the win, Bookheimer said Dynizzle's goal was to run a fast time but specifically to finally win this meet after last year's narrow loss with the same line-up. Montijo added, "we wanted the flowers, the medals, all of it!" Next month they will have a chance to run an even faster time with the same foursome at Penn Relays.

2 courageous rallies -
the edge goes to Dalilah and Cardozo

by Tony Jones, Illinois PrepTopTimes, a DyeStat site

1. Benjamin Cordozo, NY 9:05.60 [2:12.0 anchor]
2. Warwick Valley, NY 9:06.33 [2:26.4 lead off leg]
3. Westfield 9:07.70

Summary:

The most important storyline here was the top two finishing teams here ran with a lot of courage. Cardozo was in the middle of the pack on the first exchange with a 2:21 leg. Meanwhile, Warwick was much further back in last place after a mishap on the opening leg.

Both teams started their gradual ascension to the front. For Warwick, it wasn’t until midway through the third leg when they were back in the money. Warwick anchor Tori Pennings, who played a huge role in Friday’s DMR, seized the lead from Westfield with about two laps remaining.

However, the great Dalilah Muhammad of Cardozo did some reeling in of her own. With just over one lap remaining, the crowd got up out of their seats to anticipate an epic finish.

True to form like a sprinter, Muhammad began to build her kick on the final backstretch but Pennings would not quite give in. Muhammad, no stranger to the Armory dramatics, drew one more charge to move ahead. It wasn’t until the final straight that Pennings conceded to Muhammad but both teams ran a super and fantastic race.
