Boys teams flirt with US record

by Matt Soja, DyeStat correspondent

After Shenendehowa established the national record in this meet four years ago, it has tantalized many schools coming here every year and hoping to erase the New York harriers' 17:25.98 from the record books. Last year Shen almost broke their older teammates' mark but missed by mere 14 hundredths of a second. This year Danbury and Warwick Valley both dreamed of getting the record, and they both battled it out to the finish in front of the delighted spectators.

Joey Bubniak started things off for the Hatters, taking the early lead over the field until Germantown Friends' Ortiz took over on fifth lap and pulled away, handing off in 4:24.7, about three seconds ahead of Danbury and Warwick. At this point it was apparent that either team would have a very difficult task of besting Shen's time. Their second runners promptly got to work, swallowing the distance separating them from Germantown, and by half mile mark they took control of the leg with Danbury's Justin Rau in the lead and Warwick's Alex Leuchanka on his shoulder. With 500m to go Leuchanka made a huge move into the lead and finished with a powerful kick, splitting a 4:18.8 and handing off more than five seconds ahead of Danbury.

But the Connecticut team was not done yet. Parker Boudreau ran a spectacular third leg, catching up to Warwick's Brad Ackerman and taking the lead halfway through the mile. He gradually opened a gap on Ackerman, splitting 4:17.8 and giving Danbury a three-second lead going into the anchor leg.

Danbury anchor Willie Ahearn would need to run a 4:15 mile to get the national record, so the fans went into a frenzy as he began his attempt. Yet their roar only increased as behind him the Warwick Valley anchor Mike Fox made a literal run for it, quickly reducing the deficit to the leader to just a step with one lap to go, with both teams seemingly still in the hunt for the national mark. But Ahearn's kick put the title away from Fox's reach, and Danbury won by a three-second margin. Unfortunately their 17:28.47 was short of Shenendehowa's mark which survived yet another year.

Warwick Valley finished second in 17:31.49, and Germantown Friends, anchored by Max Kaulbach's impressive 4:15.8, took the bronze in 17:34.25 with both teams breaking into top ten all-time.

Splits for the top three teams were as follows:

Danbury: Bubniak 4:27.4, Rau 4:25.3, Boudreau 4:17.8, Ahearn 4:17.9
Warwick: Forkiewicz 4:28.0, Leuchanka 4:19.2, Ackerman 4:26.4, Fox 4:17.8
Germantown: Ortiz 4:24.7, Gus McKenzie 4:28.0, Jake McKenzie 4:25.8, Kaulbach 4:15.8

After the race Danbury's Parker Boudreau said the Hatters' goal was winning the race and possibly also setting the national record. He added, "we are a little disappointed because we did not get it, but it was a little confusing with the splits. We did not know exactly if we were on pace because they were not 1600m legs." As for the rivalry against Warwick, Danbury's third leg said, "they are a very respectable team, and we had a few good races against them before, so we knew they would challenge us." Boudreau's legs were a little tired because of his sprint medley anchor on Friday, but he did not use that as an excuse. In fact, he might even run the 4x800 Sunday afternoon.

Boudreau also mentioned that the Hatters did not even focus specifically on the indoor season, treating it mostly as preparation for the spring, when they will face early tests at Arcadia and Penn. He added, "we are running a lot of mileage now, so we hope it will pay off in a couple of months."
