The 2 mile was advertised as Pennsylvania sweepstakes, with at least three Keystone State runners in the hunt for the national trophy. It was a rematch of the 3000m race at the Pennsylvania state meet where Josh Izewski won in 8:30.78, ahead of Chris Bodary and Max Kaulbach. While the first two harriers were fresh on Sunday, Kaulbach was handicapped by Saturday’s anchor leg of the 4 x 1 mile relay, where he split 4:15.8, so it was expected he would let the other two set the pace. Additionally, the silver medalist from Friday’s 5000m, Zachary Ornelas, also returned for another attempt at a national crown. Ornelas was the early pace-setter, taking the race out in 1:06.4 at quarter mile and 2:14.3 at the half. Bodary and Izewski sat on his shoulder while Kaulbach patiently hung in behind them, gradually moving up through the pack. After Ornelas took the field through three quarters in 3:23.3, Friday’s fatigue started setting in, and Izewski took over the lead on seventh lap with Kaulbach and Bodary in tow. From then on it was an all-Pennsylvania show, with Izewski hitting the mile in 4:30.3 and Kaulbach a step behind him. The two leaders gradually pulled away from Bodary at the beginning of the second mile. Kaulbach briefly took the lead on tenth lap, but Izewski quickly came back to the front to go through mile and a quarter in 5:38.2. They continued in this order for another couple of laps, going through mile and a half in 6:47.3, and then the Germantown standout pounced at the opportunity to make a move, quickly going in front and opening a slight gap. With a quarter to go, he clocked a 7:57.6 and had a two-second lead over Bodary. He would only increase it on the last two circuits around the oval, just missing the elusive 9-minute barrier with a 9:02.65 performance. Bodary would hang on to second with a 9:07.00 while Ornelas grabbed a second individual distance medal of the weekend with a late run for third place in 9:11.77, preventing a Penn sweep of the podium. This performance was a major personal best for the Philadelphia native, improving on his previous mark of 9:14.10 from a month ago by almost twelve seconds. It was also the best time in the nation before the Nike 2 mile race in Maryland. After the race Kaulbach said that he was only a little tired from Saturday’s mile. He explained, “my legs were a little tired at the beginning of the race, but after the gun goes off, the fatigue quickly goes away.” He added that had he been fresh in this race, he probably would have taken the lead earlier, “perhaps with 1200 to go.” The senior said this was the biggest success of his high school career, along with winning the state mile title. Asked about the depth of Pennsylvania harriers in this race, he replied, “it is very impressive to have so many PA guys up there. We could be one of the best states in the nation in the event.” Kaulbach wants to break 9 minutes in the outdoor season, hopefully getting into the 8:52-8:54 range. Next month, however, he will focus on relay competition as his team is hoping to run a sizzling distance medley in the stacked Penn Relays race. Summary:
Cali first got acquainted with the Armory faithful on Saturday noon when she led off her team’s 4x1mile relay. All she did was take the lead in the unseeded section on the very first leg and proceeded to run 5:01- a very fine time.
Still, not many observers gave Cali a chance to win the 2-mile, let along place high, despite coming in with a decent personal best of 10:51.
Just like her race in the 4x1M she quickly grabbed the lead. Usually, the first 400m doesn’t tell much nor the does the second one. But when the race reached the ¾ mile mark and the lead was four seconds and then the gap stretched to six during the fifth quarter, it began to get real interesting.
Cali, who is all of 4-10/85lbs, moved around the track like a spark plug. She later said, “I was expecting the girls to come after me but they never did.”
The mile and half was in 7:52 and the lead shaved down to four seconds as Jackucewicz broke from a comfortable pack. A strong charge was mounted against Cali but to no avail. Cali actually increased the lead back to five seconds.
The final margin was just over four seconds but it never seemed that close. Cali never slowed down or looked back and later said, “my goal was to not get left behind.”
