Day 5 Recap - Jordan, Shepard Sparkle as Texans Take Center Stage

By Rich Gonzalez, DyeStat.com

WALNUT (July 28, 2007) -- High school stars past, present and future converged on Day Five of the USATF Junior Olympics National Championships on Saturday. If the record book is good indication, our sport's outlook at the highest levels appears in very good hands -- and very fast legs.

And we can thank Texas for it.

Led by a trio of meet/divisional records -- including a pair by high-school aged Lone Star State athletes -- thousands of competitors successfully canvassed Hilmer Lodge Stadium under warm temperatures in determining titles in most contested events, as well as participating in hurdles qualifying.

Topping the headliners was Texas middle-distance ace Howard Shepard (Skyline HS/Dallas Stars TC), who throttled the final straightaway in eventually asserting his superiority with a stellar 1:50.51 Intermediate Boys Division Junior Olympics record. Shepard, who split 1:50-point earlier in the six-day meet in a 4x800-meter relay, capped a sensational personal meet with his third record in four days (4x800, and twice in the open 800, where he previously broke his own 2006 mark with a 1:51.94 mark in Thursday's qualifying).

Texas also hummed in the short relay in the Young Women's Division as Victoria Jordan, Brittany Carr, Alex Pegram and LaKeidra Stewart teamed for Dallas Gold TC to take down the 4x100 record. The quartet clocked 44.43 to shear 0.13 seconds off the national record set by the very same club last year, with Carr being the only roster holdover from that unit.

Victoria Jordan also dazzled for Dallas Gold in individual action, rolling to a nearly half-second triumph in the deuce with a stunning all-conditions best of 22.84, which was well below the divisional record 23.27 set by Gabby Mayo last year. But Jordan's mark was negated for record purposes due to the presence of a 2.6 meters-per-second aiding wind.

Two other record-like clockings also were gone with the (aiding) wind as Intermediate Division stars Shaquille Tubman (Boys 200) and Jasmin Stowers (Girls 100m HH) were supported by favorable conditions. Tubman (Hastings HS, Houston Heat TC) fan faster than age-group legend Obea Moore (who was in attendance) in the deuce by a clear margin (20.91, to Moore's 21.10 in 1995), but was propelled by another 2.6 meter-per-second gust. The South Carolinian Stowers won the second of five heats in hurdles qualifying, with her 13.79 win being faster than the record in 13.81, but was aided by a +2.4.

Washington's Jordan Stray was the other record-setter this weekend, despite not matching his personal best. With recognized record marks only allowable in youth-sanctioned USATF meets, his previous mark of 229-03 was not eligible. Thus Stray re-whirled in the ring this weekend and unleashed a winning toss of 221-11 (67.64 meters) to better his own Junior Olympics Young Men's record (64.07m) from a year ago.

Qualifying action in the hurdles revealed what should be exciting Sunday finals. North Carolina's Wayne Davis breezed to a 14.06 heat win in the Intermediate Boys 110m HH heats despite the slightest of headwinds (-0.1 mps). Georgia's William Wynne (McEachern HS) was a runaway top qualifier in the Young Men's 400-meter intermediate hurdles (51.82) and will aim to ratchet it up a notch in chasing the 49.77 record on Sunday. He ran 49.70 over the same flight of hurdles at USATF Juniors last month and won the World Youth 400H title two weeks ago over shorter barriers.

The Young Men's high hurdles saw two Californians steal top billing as Rashad Smith (Pinole Valley HS) was an absolute blur in racing from Lane 2 en route to a 13.81 wind legal heat win. Southlander Terry Prentice of nearby Diamond Ranch HS and the Southern California Cheetahs) was out quickly to win his heat in 13.95 but admittedly "felt slow, floating over the last few hurdles" after not racing since Junior Nationals more than a month ago. Both will meet in the finals.

Two rising stars on the California scene that continued to sparkle here were Elias Gedyon and Akawkaw Ndipagbor. The Loyola HS-bound Gedyon did not break his own Youth Boys division national record in the 800, but did dominate the event with a near-six-second win in 1:56.59, missing Cody Harper’s mark by just 0.23. He'll compete Sunday in the 1500m final as well. The Long Beach Poly-bound Ndipagbor held off Kenyattia Hackworth to win the Youth Girls 200m final in a wind legal 24.21. Ndipagbor will aim for the one-lap title in a big Sunday showdown with division record-holder Robin Reynolds.

The six-day, 7,000-athlete meet concludes Sunday with an array of finals in all 10 age-group classifications.
