JOs Get Under Way With Multis, Steeples, Walks

The 41st USATF Junior Olympics begin today and tomorrow with limited schedules, consisting mainly of the multi-events (decathlon for young men/intermediate boys, heptathlon for young women/intermediate girls, and pentathlon for youth boys/girls), steeplechase races, and race walks.

Although full start lists were not available before the meet, many top preps are expected to compete, with some having qualified from USATF JO Regional meets (and state association meets before that) and some coming here exempt because of competition in other national and international youth and junior competition.

Some of the top competitors expected to compete this week, according to USATF.org (all young men/women divisions):
  • Bryshon Nellum CA, with the Southern Cal Running Cougars, is the US #1 in the 400 (45.38) and 200 (20.43), and is expected to run both. He was the USATF Juniors and Pan Am Juniors champ in the 400, and won 4 golds (including relays) at the CIF meet.
  • Nellum's competition may include William Wynne GA in the 400, but Wynne will likely be most dominant in the 400H and 110H, where he won gold and silver at the World Youth Championships (also had relay gold). His 49.01 over the 36" 400H was a World Youth Record and the Titans standout is also US#1 (49.70) over the 39" sticks, which he will compete over here.
  • Stunning World Youth Champ Christian Taylor GA, representing Quicksilver TC, recorded huge PRs in Ostrava to win gold (52-05.50 TJ) and bronze (23-11 LJ)
  • Ke'Nyia Richardson CA, #2 all-time in the TJ, was sixth in the senior at USATF before claiming the Junior national title. The EOYDC leaper has a best of 44-05.50 from winning the Pan Am Junior gold.
  • The 100H could be a barn-burner between US#2 Jackie Coward TN of Track Knoxville, with a best of 13.17, and World Youth Champ and US#3 Julian Purvis CA of EOYDC, who has run 13.32. Coward is also top seed in 400H at 57.21.
  • After taking 4th in the Ostrava octathlon, Curtis Beach NM is coming back for his 2nd multi in 2 weeks. He was 2nd for the Intermediate title here last year and is going for the young men's title this time.

Our "Favorite" Meet Each Year (of all the meets, the one we like the most!)

by Doug Speck - Editor, DyeStatCal

" ... At these meets, I have seen the future of the sport coming, as athletes like Angela Williams and Obea Moore and others shattered records, while moving up through the age divisions, and waved good-by to those we cover as they move out the end of their high school careers ... "

Over the last couple of decades we have had the chance to see Track and Field Meets, all around the world, at all the different levels. We consider ourselves very lucky with memories that could not be recreated, or would be traded for anything. Go to DyeStatCal

Overview

(from USATF.org) The 41st USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships will be held at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on the campus of Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California. The USATF Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships is the most visible youth athletic development program in the world. Many of today's Olympic stars began their track and field careers competing in the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships.

Over 6,000 athletes are expected to converge on Mt. SAC for the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships. Entry for this championship is based on athlete performances at preliminary, Association, and Regional levels of the 2007 USATF Junior Olympic Program. Competition takes place in five two-year age divisions, with athletes generally falling between the ages of 8 and 18.

With a seating capacity of 15,000, Hilmer Lodge Stadium has hosted numerous track and field championships, including the famous Mt. SAC Relays (now in its 49th year).

American's next generation of track and field stars will be competing throughout the summer and will take center stage at the national championships in Walnut.
