DMR – Southern Regional back to form

Usually Danielle Tauro is money coming from behind in a DMR. At NIN, she was not in top form and too far back. Thursday, Southern Regional (Manahawkin NJ) was back in form and – guess what? – Tauro got the stick in the lead.

And she sure wasn’t going to lose it.

This still wasn’t the Lady Rams as many national pundits have hoped for this year, one that could challenge the national record. But it was a still-fine 11:45.54, that won decisively over Ramapo (Franklin Lakes NJ – 11:56.59) – which was one of three other teams that broke 12:00.

Bookends Jillian Smith (3:33.5) and Tauro (4:50.7) both ran well, but Chelsea Cox may have been the key. She took the baton for the 800 leg from teammate Jessica Bergin two seconds down after Ramapo’s Colleen Sullivan blazed a 56.1 400 leg. Cox is new in the game, but there’s talent there, no question. Her brothers Charles and Chris, who run at Monmouth, are two of the better 400 runners in the country.

Cox ran conservatively for 600, following Coach Brian Zatorski’s instructions to a tee. Then she kicked like heck the last 200 to power into the lead and finish a 2:21.3. She gave Tauro a 2-second lead and there was no question she would win. Bay Shore and anchor Callie Hogan were within striking distance, but Hogan had an off day. Kristin Reece had a fantastic day as Carmel’s anchor, running 4:49 (some had her at 4:47), but was way too far back when she started to be a factor.

“We would have liked to try her earlier in the 800, but she just wasn’t ready yet,” said Coach Zatorski. “We’re just seeing the beginning of what she can do.”

“Nike Indoor didn’t turn out the way we hoped and I take the blame,” he added. “For some reason we were flat. But I was pretty optimistic this week that things would fall in place for us. We had run some good times the past few weeks.”

Southern Regional had originally hoped for those record-threatening performances and at NIN and Penn, and while they ran very solid times, it just didn’t work out. An injury Tauro suffered in February didn’t help, but the entire package just hasn’t quite been there anyway. But it looks like the Lady Rams might have another chance. Originally, part of the reason for the NIN/Penn emphasis was because the school had graduation scheduled the same weekend as NON, precluding opportunities for Tauro and other team seniors there. But the scenario with the school’s “snow days” is now such that graduation will be a week later. “All signs point to our being able to compete at Nike Outdoors,” said Coach Zatorski. “But we need to sit down and figure out what we all want to do. I think Danielle may have a bit of a chip on her shoulder from the Nike Indoor mile and like another chance (at NON), and I think she would have to do one or the other.”
