An Event on the Rise - Super Thursday 5ks at NON

By Steve U

It was all about the numbers Thursday night at the 2007 Nike Outdoor Nationals. And the numbers were good.

In the 2nd-ever running of the 5000 meters here, the numbers of finishers and the quality of performances picked up dramatically. It started with the fact that there were 5 sections between boys and girls instead of the two from last year, all quality races, and ended with the meet record performances by Marissa Treece MI 16:36.34 and Adam Vess CT 14:38.23. And blessed with a cool night for distance running, you can bet this event will grow as far as the NSSF wants it to.

In 2006, 36 runners finished the first-ever 5k’s, 11 girls and 25 boys. This time there were 79 – 31 girls and 48 boys. The Thursday night 5ks have become a great new tradition at NON. All they need now is a catchy name. MORE

Girls - Treece Twice a 5k Champ

Marissa Treece never planned to run the 5k, but it’s as if she was destined to do so. She had entered the mile and 2-mile, but late Thursday night, she got a call from meet officials. She had made the fast heats in both, which put her in a position of having to choose, according to meet policy. Marissa didn’t want to run the slower heat of either, so she chose the 5k to go with Saturday’s mile.

But that decision wasn’t the only issue she faced. Due to an unfortunate family/personal circumstance, Marissa and her family had to spend 11 hours in the Charlotte airport Wednesday. She had to call on all of her mental reserves to adjust to the situations and shift gears to focus when the time came Thursday night.

She came through with flying colors. Settling into 79-82 second laps after a quick 75-second opener, Marissa worked the track with metronomic efficiency, even while Lara Crofford PA held a similar pace 40 meters behind her, ready to strike if she faltered. But she never faltered. She hit 5:15 and 10:37 for 1600 splits and closed in 76+ to hit her 16:36.34, adding to the 17:04.32 she ran indoors to take the NSIC title.

“It’s almost like it helped me, really,” the Maple City Glen Lake sr. said of the previous day’s situation. “I tried not to think about anything until a few hours before the race. Then I was just able to really focus.”

Marissa gave a lot of credit to coach Joe Shay, as well as bad memories from 2006 here. “I got smoked,” she said of an 11:08.33 deuce and 4:59.72 mile.

Crofford had plenty of reason to be happy, too, hitting her time goal and a big 16:43.46 PR for 2nd, also beating the meet record of 16:57.21 from Bona Jones FL last year.

“Marissa got the gap on me starting out, and I tried to go with her but I thought 'I'm not going to stay with her,’” the Newville PA (Big Spring HS) sr. told Don Rich of pa.milesplit.com. “So I came through the mile and I felt strong, and through the two mile, I started feeling it a little, but I tried to keep my 81s. I kept the distance between her, but at the end, she just went.”

Ilsa Paulson OR ran a solid, solitary 3rd in 17:13.00, then in a battle of top NJ runners, Amanda Goetschius outkicked Nicol Traynor for 4th, 17:31.87-17:31.97. Jennifer Barbi GA finished right behind, the same place as last year, 6th, but in a time 35 seconds faster – 17:32.03.

The first race was won by soph Kim Moran NY in 18:01.23, beating sr Halsey Sinclair MD’s 18:09.19.

Boys - The Best of Vess

The tone of the evening for the boys was set early as the first of the three sections went out in 4:47 and saw Zachery Ornelas NY win with a startling 15:18.35, leading five under 15:30 and 13 at 15:41 or better. Just 14 guys broke 15:40 for the whole event last year, a feat 35 would accomplish before the end of the night this time.

After Keith Stapleton NY (15:11.08) led four under 15:15 by kicking in to win the second section, the big boys lined up for Section 3. The field included four who had broken 9:10, including 9-flat 3200 runner Adam Vess CT and amazing soph Doug Smith NJ.

The field hit a fast 68 opener, then settled into 70-72 pace. They passed 1600 in 4:44, then as the 3200 was approaching (9:31), 7 had emerged from the pack, including Vess, Smith, Jacob Nusekabel OH, Mike Spooner VA, Andrew Springer RI, Andy Wacker NC, and Terence Prial NY.

Now Vess and Smith started putting the screws to the field, pulling away from the rest of the pack with laps of 70 and 71. It wasn’t enough for Smith, who upped the ante further with a 67, taking a 2-second lead. He kept up the withering pace, but started losing form in the last 300. With 200 to go, it looked like Smith still had it, but Vess got on his horse and picked it up another notch. Smith could not sprint and Vess closed in 32-65 for the 14:38.23 victory, while the Jersey soph held on for one of the best 10th-grade times every, 14:40.76.

Behind them, four more broke 15:03, and 12 at 15:15 or better.

Although Vess would have likely been accepted to the fast heat in the 2M if he’d wanted, he chose the 5k to give him a chance to go for a second state record. The 9:00.20 3200 he ran in the CT Open was a new CT best, so he wanted to go after Andre Leboy’s 14:37.83 from 2002. “I was hoping all along to run this race,” he said. “I was running for time and whenever the pace slowed down, I kept trying to pick it back up.”

But the competition was what pushed Vess in the end, what pushed him to a gritty 4:31 last 1600. “It was my last individual race in high school. I wasn’t going to lose on a kick,” he said. “It was bittersweet, missing the record, but I loved the win.”

Vess was also pushed by a huge cheering section, made up both of his Xavier CT teammates and those from rival Danbury CT. “It hasn’t happened too often,” he said with a laugh, regarding his rivals cheering him on. “But everyone cheering really, really helped.”

Despite a tough loss, Smith had plenty to be happy with, including a 14-second PR from the track 5k he ran earlier in the spring and a run 45 ticks better than 2006’s NON 5k. “I came down here last year and ran 15:25,” he told Dave Devine. I wasn't really fit, and this year I was ready to rock and ready to go. So it feels great."

"I knew we were going to go fast, but that last mile was just blazing fast," he added. "Last week I ran 9:04...so I was feeling good coming off a fast pace and able to change gears. Coming around I took the lead, (Vess) had all his fans cheering so I knew he was coming."

Likely speaking for a lot of Thursday night’s distance titans, Smith concluded, "I can't wait to go back home and chill for the rest of the summer. I came down here knowing it was my last race [of the season] and I really just wanted to go out hard and go strong."
