California half-miler Cory Primm (Westlake) was hoping to shake off some lingering disappointment from his indoor campaign and run a fast time in his home state. He managed to accomplish both goals with a riveting wire-to-wire run that saw him leave an extremely deep field battling behind him for second.

“I wanted to go out in 54-53 and then come back as fast as I could,” Primm said.

His 400 split was close, at 54.8, but was unable to shake North Carolina star Dylan Ferris (East Forsyth), who had beaten Primm indoors, or Silverado NV stud Sean Zurko, who ran a sizzling 1:51 Friday night to anchor his 4x800 team to a silver. All three were flying down the backstretch, with Ferris coming closest to passing Primm on the far turn. From there, it was all Primm, pulling clear on the homestretch to record his first sub-1:50 (1:49.50) as Ferris faded to 4th and Isak Bergman (Ellensburg WA) nudged past Zurko to nail the high finish many expected of him (1:51.22 to 1:51.52).

The girls' 800 initially appeared to be chapter two of the coming out party for Logan CA ninth grader Thandi Stewart, who the previous evening had carried her 800 sprint medley team to a win with her 54.1 anchor.  Stewart led a deep pack through a 62.7 opening 400, and looked strong doing it, but she began to falter down the backstretch as a trio of sub-2:10 talent surged forward.  Justine Fedronic (Carlmont CA), Emily Dunn (Esperanza CA) and Natalie Johnson (Xavier Prep AZ) battled through the far turn and down the long homestretch, none willing to cede any ground.  The three competitors were shoulder-to-shoulder-to-shoulder as they descended on the finish line, and it was only a last second surge from Fedronic that secured the win.  The 1-3 spread was whisper thin for a distance race—2:08.08, 2:08.32, 2:08.61.
