Clifton Park reigns supreme in NY, Purple Wave second
Both to meet the nation's best in Portland, Oregon

By Tom Cuffe, NY NTN Regional Editor

The day dawned crisp and clear, with a brilliant sun beaming down on all at the NY Federation meet site at Bowdoin State Park, which on this day hosted the best programs throughout NY and the Northeast. On this 24th day of November in the fall of 2007, all the cards were placed on the table for the Nike Team Nationals Regional Qualifier; at stake: two automatic berths into the United States' only true national championship in any high school sport. The race was being billed as The Purple Wave – Warwick Valley, the NYSPHSAA Champions versus Clifton Park TC – Shenendehowa, the NYS Federation Meet Champions each pulling out all the stops and playing every card possible.

The small field of 60 runners dashed across the flats of Bowdoin behind bold front runner Giovanni Signoretti of Blue Collar Runners, who set a lively pace as the first half mile was fairly swift. It was evident from the outset that the green clad CPTC (Shenendehowa) team was on a mission, as a half mile in their entire squad was in the top twenty. The Adirondack RC (Queensbury), another of the pre-meet favorites, was also out hard early, in hot pursuit of securing a finish in the top two and an auto-bid to Portland Meadows. The Purple Wave (Warwick Valley) seemed to be biding their time early, and running conservatively as they were sitting third in the team standings through the half-mile and mile markers.

The first man by the mile marker was Signoretti, as the officials were calling out 4:57, 58, 59, five minutes. Signoretti’s fleeting 10-meter lead had shrunken down to just a meter or two as the peloton steadily reeled him in. Now, R.J. Sniffen of Latham TC (Shaker), Matt Flint of Adirondack RC, Mike Fox of Purple Wave and surprising sophomore Dan Harris of CPTC joined Signoretti at the front of the field.

The pace was solid and the team battle was becoming clear, as each team's scorers crossed the auto-scoring system at the midway point.  At 2500 meters meet announcer Ian Brooks notified the large crowd that CPTC (Shenendehowa) was on top by a score of 54 to 72 over Purple Wave (Warwick), with Adirondack RC a very close third with 79 points.

On the downhill portion of the course, the senior trio of Signoretti, Fox and Flint had company in the form of Dan Harris, a lanky smooth striding sophomore. Then there were four, and they entered the final go round with a half mile remaining.

Dan Harris can take you through the final meters of the race:

“Yesterday’s win, I can remember so perfectly, when Flint, Fox, Signoretti, and me were at about 300 meters left I was slowly slipping, and I turned around and we had a good 150 meters on the next pack, so I said to myself, 'Let’s see what I can really do,' and started my kick to try to run away from Flint, who I see atop many local meets, Fox, who blew me away at States, and Signoretti, who I have never been really close enough to see in a race. Whenever I see Fox and Flint, I know there's going to be a crazy kick somewhere, so for the rest of the race I just ran scared. When I crossed the line and figured out no one had caught me it was an amazing feeling. Even though the individual title was a huge feat, our main goal was to win the race as a team – which we did perfectly. We are really looking for a quality run out in Portland.”

Back to the team battle, in the second half of the race spectators were treated as they saw both CPTC and Purple Wave show off their superior strength and racing skill as both teams displayed they were the class of the field, racing splendidly over the last mile and a half. As the race entered the final three quarters of a mile, it was clear that the Plainsmen of CPTC/Shenendehowa would capture the coveted NTN NY title as they had five men in the top fifteen. Harris, the winner, was backed up by the fine running of Jaimie Glover in 5th; William Danaher in 6th; Brian Trainor in 10th and Jon Mc Donald closed out the scoring in 15th place. Purple Wave/Warwick improved their places slightly to finish second and punch their tickets to Portland Meadows, tallying 57 points. The Warwick team was certainly a pleased group, but you tell they were a bit subdued as they had beaten Shenedehowa head to head just two weeks ago at the NYSPHSAA Championship Race by 20 points. Head coach Tim St. Lawrence was pleased to get the second place out of New York, knowing full well that 1 = 2 and 2 = 1 in this qualifying process.

First year head coach Mark Thompson of CPTC/Shenendehowa was extremely happy for his guys at the conclusion of the race, and gave them full credit for a brilliant victory. He reminded his team in his soft spoken and business-like way to get in a good 20 minute cool-down as soon as possible after the race. Thompson praised his team for their focus and attention to detail throughout the entire season, dating back to their summer preparation. Coach Thompson spoke about the team's willingness to make all the sacrifices necessary in order to run at the front of the pack all year long and make an impact at the national level. You could see the wonderful chemistry of this championship team as they spoke to reporters and then went off for their 20 minute cool-down, dreaming of showing their cards one more time at Portland Meadows.
