Distance Events Again To Highlight Classic

By John Nepolitan

For years the Yale High School Invitational was the highlight of the indoor track season, as teams flocked to the New Haven school to run on the super fast “tuned” track. With the opening of the New York Armory Track and Field Center and its banked Mondo surface, teams looking for fast times traveled south to New York City. While the Yale Invitational has remained good, it was not the meet it once was.

That all changed in 2006 with the renovation of the Yale track, as a new banked surface was installed and christened with super fast DMR times by the Suffern girls (11:45.73-#3 all time) and NTN Champs Saratoga boys (10:09.37 - #5 all time) on Friday evening. The next day Brian Rhodes-Devey (Guilderland, NY) outdueled Jay Koloseus (Guilford, Ct) in the nation’s fastest 3000 meters to that point with a 8:31.41 to 8:37.71 win. Rhodes-Devey was not the only national leader as Remi Ray (Staples CT ) ran a swift 1:54.42 in the 800 meters.

Once again in 2007 the DMRs on Friday will be the feature event as the girls championship race will have always-powerful Saratoga (NY) facing off against in-state rivals Carmel, Bayshore and Burnt Hills. The small school race (under 600 population) will see a rematch of the battle between Greenwich (NY) and Bronxville (NY), who pushed each other under the old 4 x 1500 meter relay record earlier this season.

The boys championship field will feature a battle between Connecticut powers Danbury and Glastonbury. Back in the fall, Danbury defeated Glastonbury by 4 points to claim the state title and earn a trip to the 3rd Nike Team Nationals. Others sure to be in the mix are sure to be New York cross country champions Shenendehowa (but are also entered the next day in New York), Shaker, Collegiate, and Burnt Hills.

Saturdays events once again will feature great distance match-ups as the nine girl’s 3000 meter sections will end with a battle between Footlocker Finalist Hannah Davidson (Saratoga, NY), current USA #2 over 2-miles Kristin Reese (Carmel, NY) and current national 3000 meter leader Jillian King(Scotia-Glenville, NY). The 12 boys sections will conclude with Drew Houghtalen (Burnt Hills, NY), Andrew Hanko (Trinity Christian, NJ), NTN Champ Steve Murdock (Shenendehowa, NY), Max Walden (Hopkins, CT), and Steve Wood (Bishop Hendricken, RI) all set to do battle. Murdock is a question, however, as he is also entered in the mile at this meet and in a mile race in New York the same day. It has also been heard that he is running a leg on Shen’s DMR Friday night. Fans will have to wait and see where he competes.

With the qualifying period for the Millrose High School Invitational mile closing this weekend, the mile fields will feature quality runners looking to run a time fast enough to earn a spot on the Madison Square Garden starting line. The girls’ race will feature Davidson, Caitlin Lane (Greenwich, NY), Sarah McCurdy (Bay Shore, NY), King, Jeanne Mack (LaSalle, RI), Erin Hays (Shoreham Wading River, NY), Emma Perron (Concord, Ct), and Suejin Ahn (Ward Melville, NY).

The boys’ field appears top be powerful enough to possibly have one or more runners earn a Millrose birth, the question will be just who will show up as many of the contenders are double entered in two meets on the same day. Among the entries are NTN Champ and Footlocker 3rd placer Murdock, Dartmouth and Brown mile champ Andrew Palumbo (Bishop Hendricken, RI), Adam Vess (Xavier, Ct), Andrew Springer (Westerly, RI), and Andrew Judd (Conard, CT).
