When New Rochelle High School - the Westchester County, NY school with a superb track tradition - won the 2006 NIN shuttle hurdles crown in 33.41, it already knew it had a good shot at the 2007 crown.

With two of the four 2006 gold medalists - Assata Cowart and Lacreshia Simpson - coming back, the Hugenots were in good shape.

And so it evolved.

Charging ahead from the outset, the New Rochelle unit of Cowart-Simpson-Tameeka Cooper-Elizabeth Mott won it handily in 34.07 over Michigan's Ann Arbor Youth Track Club (34.33) and New Jersey's Southern Regional HS Hammer Track Club (34.94.)

Manchester's 35.09, out of the first of four sections, held up for fourth.

"Sure I was nervous but the experience from last year really helped," said Cowart, who will attend Wheaton, Mass. College.

"Next year it will be the others' (junior Cooper and sophomore Mott) turn; I hope they can carry on the tradition," said Simpson, headed for the University of Georgia.

Boys

4x55m shuttle hurdles relay: Jordan McPherson took time out from the pentathlon competition to help Wayne High School (Huber Heights, Ohio) to a third straight NIN crown in the shuttle hurdles race.

Wayne won the final heat in 30.47 with a foursome of Keith Dixon, McPherson, Bryan Womack and Cory Holman. Womack, the only junior in the lineup, was making his NIN debut. McPherson and Holman ran on last year's winning squad while Dixon has three championship rings from the shuttle hurdles event.

"You just can't find four good hurdlers at a school," said an ebullient Holman. "But Wayne's been doing this since I was a freshman – and we're not done yet!" Holman predicted that Wayne will contend for the 4x200m relay title on Sunday. "And Jordan's gonna win the pentathlon," he added, "and me and him are gonna finish one-two in the long jump!"

The next two spots went to New Jersey schools. Willingboro was runnerup in 31.26 with South Brunswick third in 31.65.
