"Who's that Number 14?" early arrivals asked as the girls 5,000-meter race, all new to the Nike Indoor Championships schedule of events, got rolling.

Their heat sheets listed just 13 runners.

NIN fans soon found out, as Aurora Scott of Portsmouth, Va. - by now identified by by announcer Rich Gonzalez - took off at a wicked pace and began saying "adieu" to competitor after competitor.

After a 5:18 opening 1,600 meters, it was only a matter of time. The listed national record of 16:43.02 for this seldom run event had been set three years ago by Briana Jackucewicz, now a sophomore at Colts Neck, NJ but then just a seventh-grader.

Would Scott do it? Could she do it? As the crowd's enthusiasm built, however, the answers became no. Even with two other Footlocker finalists in the race, Kristen McGlynn and Alexandra Banfich, Scott wound up lapping the field and crossing the line in 16:53.55.

She'd wanted to run the race all along, but her dad-coach, Spencer Scott, thought no. By the morning, though, Aurora's wishes prevailed - hence the Number 14.

"I really thought I could run a lot faster," said Scott. "This is pretty disappointing."

Even more disappointing will be sitting out the IAAF World Junior Cross Country Championships in Mombasa, Kenya, in two weeks time. Security and other concerns will keep her home.

"I really wanted to go," she said. "But I guess I'll have other opportunities later on."

She'd placed fourth in the National Junior qualifying race in Boulder and added a third in the NACAC (North America and Caribbean) event in Florida a week ago.

Oh, and one more thing.

High school racing is an all-new experience to her since she's home schooled.

Some states allow home-schooled athletes to compete for their local schools but Virginia does not.

She's a junior academically and will soon start mulling her collegiate options.

McGlynn was a distant second in 17:36.60 with Banfich third at 17:41.08.

Boys

5,000 meters: Jason Witt figured he's make his move with about three laps left to go. But when the place slowed with about 800 meters, the junior from Midlothian, Va., zipped into the lead and never looked back, winning in 15:05.29.

Joshua Brewer (Pearcy, Ark.) set the pace through the first 3,000 meters. With ten laps to go, Brewer had a three-second lead over Adam Lenz (Crested Butte, Colo.). On the next lap Lenz zipped past Brewer, followed closely by the lanky Witt.

When Lenz slowed, Witt took command and was never challenged the rest of the way. "My plan was to stay with the leaders," said Witt. "I wasn't going to talk off until the last 600 meters, but I did it earlier because the place was slowing down."

Witt was content to watch Brewer and Lenz control the race through the first twenty laps. "I researched my main competition," Witt said. "When they didn't go with the leaders, I wasn't worried.

Witt wore a national team singlet – the same kind of top worn by two of his brothers at the 2003 Nike Indoor Nationals when they ran for Midlothian High School's victorious 4-mile relay team. "It's good luck, I guess," he said. "We're two-for-two with it."

Andy Wacker (Southern Pines, N.C.), who followed Witt's surge, placed second in 15:12.35. Thomas Porter (Stafford, Va.) finished third in 15:12.82. Fourth in 15:19.80 was Brewer, followed by Lenz in 15:23.97.

The 5,000 is a new event at the NIN and Witt's time established the meet record.
