Story by Tony Jones

The feeling going into the FLMW meet was qualifying.  No one wanted to outright say it, but getting tenth place was no different than first.  Several high-powered athletes probably knew they would easily qualify for the national championship that will be contested in San Diego, California in two weeks.  For starters, Chris Derrick (Sr., Naperville, Il.) may have figured he had two national championship races to run on top of what he has endured in his magical season.  Mike Fout (Sr., LaPorte, Indiana) knew he had already run a tough post-season opener at the Mid-East championships against some pretty stiff competition.  So, in short, it was more getting on the course, getting in the run, and getting out of the cold to warm San Diego.

The race started out normal – fast – as a tremendous pack formed at the top of the first hill past the opening half-mile.  Things slowed down the next half-mile or kilometer.  Fout and Derrick were joined by top ten pre-meet favorites such as Illinois veteran Kevin Havel, and Minnesota stalwart Rob Finnerty.  Havel and Finnerty probably have had the most pressure on them since their freshman years.  Both came in great resumes, but Havel said previously, “I finally figured how to race this post-season.”

Maverick Darling (Michigan) and Eric Fernandez (Missouri) were up with the leaders as they hit a deliberate 4:50 first mile.  The pack barely thinned out as the second mile was approaching.  It seemed to take quite awhile after the lead vehicles passed before the runners would rumble past.  Finally, two miles in a still moderate 9:40 with Derrick and Fout at the front.

As the last kilometer of the race approached, Fout had had enough.  He stepped on the accelerator and opened up a gap on the field.  Still, no one really went after him, not even the ultra-competitive Derrick.  Fout got a measure of confidence in winning and momentum for nationals in two weeks.  His 14:56 in the chill was nothing to sneeze at.  Derrick finished a solid second that included a bright smile that seemed to indicate plenty left in the tank as he crossed the finish line in 15:01.

Darling held off Finnerty, Havel, Kevin Williams (Lakewood, CO), Joseph Manilafasha (Denver, CO), Indiana rival “Tito” Mendrano, Bobby Nicholls (Parker, CO), and Evan Appell (Littleton, CO).  All the qualifiers ran close to 15:20, which in itself is pretty solid.

Given that it was his first tour here, it’s easy to see why Fout could still maintain the “just wanted to qualify” line, despite his winning move.  “Last year, I was going to run this race but unfortunately I experienced a knee injury halfway through the season,” he explained.  “I have never run here before so I didn’t know what to expect.  I just want to come out here and see what happened.”

“I didn’t push it as hard as I could – I just wanted to qualify,” he added.  “In two weeks, I really look to push [the pace].  I still have two weeks of hard training and no negative thoughts around.  I need to remain patient.”

“The pace was a little conservative [around 4:50],” he continued.  “My coach told me to remain patient and that’s what I did.  I tucked in behind the pack early on because of the wind and the pace… I had more left in me if I needed it.”

Colorado qualified four individuals for the nationals for the second straight year and had three others in the top twenty – easily winning the unofficial team scoring title with 45 points.  Kevin Williams was considered almost a shoo-in and Evan Appel was given a good chance to repeat, but Joseph Manilafasha had not showed nearly his 2006 form during the regular season before Saturday.  So he was a big surprise, as was Bobby Nicholls.  Appel, Manilafasha, and Nicholls are all juniors.

Nicholls attributes the camaraderie to state pride and that the guys of Colorado are friends off the course.  Plus, they set a goal of wanting to equal last year’s efforts.

Although he is close friends with the other three Colorado qualifiers, Nicholls has very close ties with the state of Illinois.  His father, Bobby Nicholls Sr., ran for LaGrange Lyons Twp and was in the epic 2 mile relay state race where the national record was set back in 1976.  Actually, Bobby Jr. was born in LaGrange before moving to Colorado at the age of three.

“I started on the right side of the [finish line] and Kevin [Williams] came up along side of me and then led the charge of the hill,” said Nicholls of how the race unfolded for him.  “I kind of hung back, as I didn’t want to burn out, because 10th is like winning.  I was in 30th something early on then moved up into the 20’s and, at 1.5 miles, I made my charge from there to the finish.”

Derrick, whose Neuqua Valley team took over the US#1 spot this week in The Harrier 25, related the mental game that was going on inside his head during a race that had to seem like a preface to the next two weeks.  “The first 400 meters to half-mile was super fast, like NTN regionals last week,” he said.  My legs were hurting a little bit, but fortunately the next thousand [meters] was really, really slow.  The pack was bunching up.  I was thinking that “somebody” needed to pick things up.  I really didn’t want to take control of the race [at that point] as it was too early – if at all.  I was going downhill [during the second mile with Eric Fernandez].  We got a little separation and that was what I was looking for.  I wanted to be in a pack that breaks away from the field.

“Mike [Fout] ran a great race and I don’t want to take away from him.  I had something left in me [the last 400m] and thought about going after Mike but …” he trailed off.  Well, again, it was about qualifying.  “I have been racing [a ton of guys this season for long stretches]. I needed to think about and work on strategy with two BIG races remaining.”

Regarding his training, Derrick said, “We didn’t start working on intervals into late into September because of the [anticipated] late season peak.  I have missed on a week, total, of training the past two years.  I have to trust that consistency of training at this point.  The two races that I ran hard were state and NTN.  I think NTN might have been a little harder mentally because I ran the last mile hard.”

Now, Derrick will not just focus on an individual title next week in Portland, but a victory for his club as well. “Team-wise we haven’t put it together yet.  Jimmie [Riddle] is getting ready.  We will be relaxed and we will go for it.”
