Verzbicas has his way with muddy Kenosha course

Boys Story by Tony Jones - DyeStat/ESPN RISE
Girls story

The pre-race drama played out before the race even started.  US#2 Lukas Verzbicas, the sensational sophomore superstar from Orland Park Sandburg, IL, made a mockery of the course conditions and then the competition in a runaway victory to win the 31st edition of the MW Region.

What was supposed to be two protagonists playing out against a field turned out to be a non-issue.  Apparently, and for no clear reason, US#10 Futsum Zeinasellassie (So., Indianapolis North Central) did not compete.  It was reported as far as a week out by his high school coach Rick Stover that he would be competing and was still training for the meet- that claim was backed up by the Indianapolis Star newspaper two days before the meet.

The show must go on.  The starting cannon put the end to all talk and race speculation.  And just like last year, the course conditions were absolutely terrible with standing water and mud everywhere.

Verzbicas (right, Pat Davey photo) laid back going up the initial hill just after the first quarter-mile by tucking inside the massive pack.  It wasn’t until after the opening kilometer that he assumed the lead for the first time.  The first mile was a very slow 5:02.  A tremendous pack led by David Madrigal (Sr., Durand, MI) was only a few ticks back at this point.

The second mile is where course conditions get treacherous, and certainly separation will occur.  True indeed.  Verzbicas opened up a sizeable gap at 1.5 miles where numerous fans were lined up cheering his every sloppy, soggy stride.  The chase pack was nearly eight seconds back.  Walter Schafer (Sr., Cherry Creek H.S.; Centennial, CO) was out front with Missouri 3A champ Maksim Korolev on his left shoulder.  Indiana’s James Martin (Jr., Ft. Wayne Carroll), Martin Grady (Sr., Oak Park Fenwick), and Tyler Byrne (Sr., North Harrison, IN) were only few strides behind and looking good.

Meanwhile, it was Verzbicas in total control as the two-mile approached.  He picked things up massively but still it was only 9:51.  Schafer passed in 10:00, Michael Atchoo (Sr., Troy, MI) 10:01, and Grady (10:01) were in tow.  The remaining slew of notable runners streamed through between 10:10-10:30.

The final mile is where Verzbicas began to open things up and put the race out of reach.  He surged hard with the lead ATV (all-terrain vehicle) as a “pacesetter.”  The final set of rolling hills was negotiated well coming out of the woods and past the 3-mile marker in 14:55 Verzbicas looked smooth.  As he approached the finish line he took a final peek and appeared surprised to find no one in sight, then walked across the threshold to victory in 15:34.  Shafer was next to motor home in 15:41.  Byrne got the third spot ahead of a very surprising Nathan Karr of Michigan-- both clocking 15:46.

The remaining slots for San Diego were taken by Scott Fauble of Colorado- 5th (15:47), Grady- 6th (15:47), Colby Alexander of Ohio- 7th (15:49), 8th- Ryan Poland CO - 15:50, 9th- Danny Nicolls CO - 15:55, 10th- Chris Walden IN - 15:55.

Afterwards, Verzbicas nonchalantly explained that his goal was to qualify, and let everyone else lead early on.  But the goal for San Diego is: “to win in San Diego.”

Schafer (left, Pat Davey photo) indicated that the third time was a charm in earning a trip to San Diego.  The long time experience propelled him to run his best.

Olympian Craig Virgin has been coaching Danny Nicolls, the younger brother of Bobby Nicolls.  He said that Danny has been in the shadows of his older brother but never worried about confidence when competing against his brother’s past accomplishments.  The Colorado factor played out again with four qualifiers once again.  This was supposed to be a down year for the Rocky Mountain state.  Virgin explains: “I think hilly and muddy conditions favor kids from Colorado who train and live at altitude.  They are more strength runners than flat speedsters.”
