 BOYS GIRLS

60 Meters—Cameron Marshall (South Bay Express/Valley Christian, San Jose, Ca.) was third last year at 6.88 and Ryan Avery (Davis, Keysville, Ut.), was fourth in 7.01 but keep your eyes on sophomore Jordan Vaughn (Union Grove, McDonough, Ga.). After running mainly relays during the school year Vaughn stepped out in the summer to run 10.66. Chase Wheeler (Spartan/De La Salle, Concord, Ca.) ran 10.83 last spring but was a better long sprinter running 21.70 and finishing third at the Golden West Invitational. Marshall lost his outdoor season to injury.

200 Meters— Fuqauwn Greene (Track East Carolina/New Burn, N.C.) appears to be the class of the field.  He ranks No. 3 in the nation for 55 meters at 6.29 with a second place finish in the State 4A meet and fifth in the nation for 60 meters at 6.80. His best at 200 is 21.39. Last year he had outdoor bests of 10.46 and 21.08. Last year Michael Okoro (Flying AJ’s/Clover Park, Tacoma, Wa.) ran 21.74 for 200 and 48.33 for 400.  Jordan Vaughn (Union Grove, McDonough, Ga.) was 11th here last year at 22.98 but a solid summer produced a 21.76 to win the 15-16 Division of the USATF National Youth championships. Junior Robert Woods (Core Speed/Serra, Gardena, Ca.), one of the best running backs in the nation, was 15th here last year in 22.98 then moved up to the 400 outdoors where he ran 49.10.

400 Meters— Jeff Daw (Skyline, Salt Lake City, Ut.) was 17th last year in 51.82 but that was just a launch point as the senior run 21.62 and 47.91 and won both the 200 and 400 at the State outdoor meet. Kyle MacIntosh (ATS Elite/Littleton, Co.) was fourth last year at 48.58 and then concentrated on the 300 hurdles where he ran 38.26 to finish second in the State 5A. This winter he has run 21.73 and 49.40. Junior Kevin Scheuerman (ATS Elite/Chaparral, Parker, Co.) was 15th last year but has already run 50.17 this year. Jason Anderson (Skyhawk/Salem Hills,  Salem, Ut.) was 12th last year at 50.80.

800 Meters—Franco Montes (Ogden, Ut.) was the State 3A champion at 100 (11.08), 200 (22.04) and 400 (48.75) but before that he had concentrated on the 400, where he had a best of 47.81 and the 800 where he ran 1:52.67 with wins at the Davis Invitational and the Arcadia  Open race. In 2008 Brendon Confer (Servite, Anaheim) ran 4:20.24 for 1,600 during the regular season before dropping down to the 800 where he clocked 1:53.77. Last year Alex Weinheimer (Ric Rojas/Fairview, Boulder, Co.) was third here at 1:55.77 and then went on to finish 4th outdoors in the State 5A meet with a 1:54.85. Weinheimer has already run 1:55.92 this winter. Trevor Schiavone and Paul Mangiel, both from Canada, placed in the top 15 last year. During the summer the two tangled in the a national under-17 race with Schiavone prevailing, 1:55.18 to 1:55.30. Russell Robertson (Reno, Nv.) ran 1:55.65 in finish fourth in the Sacramento Meet of Champions last spring.

1,600 Meters—Junior Robbie Muhudin (Team XC/Overland, Aurora, Co.) was third last year in solid 4:17.25 but what is unusual, is that it the only competitive race track race that he has run in three years. That contrasts with three complete cross country seasons including a third place finish in the 5A division last fall.  Junior Eric Fitzpatrick (YMCA Team Idaho/Boise, Id.) was sixth last year at 4:23.08 but the spring found him running 4:18.56 for a mile in the Emerging Elite division of the Nike Outdoor Nationals. This spring Karl Wilcock (Hurricane, Ut.) ran 1:57.69 and 4:23.88 to finish second in the State 3A division behind Luke Puskedra (Judge Memorial, Salt Lake City, Ut.). Max Hardy (YMCA Team Idaho/Boise, Id.) has already run 4:28.62 for a mile.

3,200 Meters—Wes Rickman (Falcon, Co.) was fifth here last year in 9:52.14 but dropped down to 1,600 in the spring and ran 4:16.94 to finish second in the State 4A. Jon Nelson (Thunderbird/Timpview, Ogden, Ut.) was third last year at 9:48.62 and then went on to finish third in both the State 4A in the 1,600 at 4:23.05 and the 3,200 at 9:35.76. Dominick Robinson (Campbell County, Gillette, Wy.) was fourth here in 2008 with a 9:51.74 and then was a double state champion in the 4A Division with times 1:57.09 and 4:22.33. Last spring Wade Meddles (Falcon/Sierra Lutheran, Minden, Nv.) was second the State 1A Division 1,600 running 4:25.83 and won the 3,200 in 9:22.33 while running for Smith Valley.

60-Meter High Hurdles—The Hill twins, Tarique and Tashaun (Colorado Flyers/Eaglecrest, Aurora, Co.) were fifth and sixth, respectively last year. During the spring Tarique was second in the State 5A at 14.17 and Tashaun was third at 14.22. Chad Jones (Bishop O’Dowd, Oakland, Ca.) had a best of 14.62 in the North Coast Section finals. Two others to watch are Brandon Douglass (Kelly Walsh, Casper, Wy.) the State 5A Champion with a best of 14.65 and Taylor Villegas (Natrona, Casper, Wy.) who was fourth and had a best of 14.79.

High Jump—Five jumpers are entered with best of 6-6. Scott Matheson (Pleasant Grove, Ut.) was sixth last year at 6-4. Twins Alan and Jason Turnblom (YMCA Team Idaho/Mountain View, Meridian, Id.) were in the State 5A finals with Jason winning at 6-6 and Alan fourth at 6-4.  Kobi Rex (Lewis-Palmer, Monument, Co.). and Justin Lucas (Indian/Tioga, Groveland, Ca.) are the final two over 6-6.

Pole Vault—Michael Woepse (Southern California Cheetahs/Mater Dei, Santa Ana, Ca.) cleared 16-2 last spring and is the No. 8 returner in the nation. He won the Run for the Dream Indoor meet in January at 15-8. Jared Hippler (Oregon City, Or.) was fourth in the State 6A division in 2008 and cleared 15-7 at the Husky Indoor meet this winter. Jordan Parker (Reno, Nv.) was tenth here last year at 14-3 before clearing 15-2 in the spring. Matt Cooper (Socal. Cheetahs/Mater Dei, Santa Ana, Ca.) had a best of 15-1 in 2008 with five meets at 15-0 or better. Jeff Tran (Velocity/Fountain Valley, Ca.) had a best of 15-4 last year. Landon Blanchard (Cody, Wy.) has been over 15-0 indoors this season and is the latest in a long line of  Cody vaulters. Mike Starr (Folsom, Ca.) is also entered at 15-0.

Long Jump—Zach Smith (Flying AJ’s/Kent Lake, Kent, Wa.) was the State 4A outdoor champion at 23-2 then was second at the USATF JO 15-16 Division at 23-10 ½ and confirmed that with a 23-11 undercover in December. Geraldo Hiwat (YMCA Team Idaho/Capital, Boise, Id.), a foreign exchange student from the Netherlands, came to U.S. to earn a football (not soccer) scholarship and he did, signing with Boise State, but the 6-3, 185 wide receiver just might also fine himself on the track. In 2008 he had a best of 21-7 ½ competing in the Netherlands Youth Division (under 17). When he got to Capital  there was already very good jumper at the school—Kasen Covington. Two weeks ago the two of them went to the United Heritage Indoor meet. Both set personal best with Hiwat winning, 23-7 to 23-2. Chase Wheeler (Spartan/De La Salle, Concord, Ca.), who was fifth here last year at 21-6 ¾, stretched out to a wind aided personal best of 23-2 in the spring. Omar Craddock (Team Corps/Milburn Academy, Killeen, Tx.) was fourth last year at 22-5 while competing for Killeen. He has improve to 23-0 indoor this winter competing for his new school.

Triple Jump—Omar Craddock (Team Corps/Milburn Academy, Killeen, Tx.) was the winner last year at 50-10 ½. He confirmed that mark in the spring with 50-11 ½ effort to finish second in the U.S. National Junior championships. Earlier he won the State 4A title. Kasen Covington (YMCA Team Idaho/Capital, Boise, Id.) was fifth in 2008 at 47-0 ¾ and went on to win the State 5A outdoor title. He set a personal best of 48-4 in finishing second at the Golden West Invitational. Johnny Carter (Team Raw Track/Ridgeview, Bakersfield, Ca.) won the State title as a freshman in 2008 with a wind-aided 49-1. Chad Jones (Bishop O’Dowd, Oakland, Ca.) had a best of 48-2 ¾ in 2008.

Shot Put—Davis Fraker (Throw1deap/McIntosh, Peachtree City, Ga.) threw just 52-9 ½ in 2008 but year-around training with one of the best weight clubs in the nation has pushed him to 59-8 ½ last week. Another thrower who has improved is Tony Hill (Davis, Kaysville, Ut.), who was tenth here last year at 51-2. In the spring he improved to 53-6 and has already thrown  56-10 ¼ this year. Nabil Mubarak (Thow1deep/Grayson, Loganville, Ga.) was a 47-4 thrower at this time last year and has now improved to 57-10 ½ this winter. Kyler Shumway (Prairie, Cottonwood, Id.) has a best of 55-11.

Weight Throw—The top two throwers in the nation, Davis Fraker (Throw1Deep/McIntosh, Peachtree City, Ga.) and Nabil Mubarak (Throw1deep/Grayson, Loganville, Ga.) met at the New Balance Junior Hammer with Fraker prevailing 69-2 ¾ to 67-7. Miles Freberg (Throw1deep/Walton, Marietta, Ga.) was seventh at 66-6. Although outdoor throws are not eligible for indoor list Mubarak defeated Fraker, 74-0 ¼ to 72-7 last weekend.

Relays— Since teams can but do not have to be made up of athletes from the same schools it is very difficult to evaluate the various events. However, Track Eastern Carolina/New Burn, N.C. set a national high school 4 x 4 record of 3:13.06 at the New Balance meet breaking a 13-year old record and could  be shooting for the 4 x 200 record of 1:26.09 set by Poly (Long Beach, Ca.) in 2005.

60 Meters—Over the past three years junior Ashton Purvis (E.O.Y.D.C./St.  Elizabeth, Oakland, Ca.) has been a dominating force at Simplot. She was eighth in 2006 in 7.76 but she ran 7.69 in the heats (with no spikes). In 2007 she was fourth in 7.53 and last year she won in 7.38. This year she is the national leader at 55 meters with a 6.96 and ranks No. 2 in the national over 60 meters with a 7.46. Trinity Wilson (E.O.Y.D.C./St. Mary’s, Berkeley, Ca.) was seventh last year as an eighth-grader with a 7.75. Outdoors she had best of 12.04 and 11.78 wind-aided for 100 meters. Kellie Schueler (Central Oregon/Summit, Bend, Or.) is dropping down here. Last year she was the 100, 200 and 400 State 5A champion and had best of 12.01, 24.50 and 54.70. Andrea Geubelle (Flying AJ’s/Curtis, Tacoma, Wa.) is primarily a jumper but has best 12.10. Breyonna Hunter (Gardena Core/Serra, Gardena, Ca.) has also run 12.10. Keep an eye on Dominique Thompson (Taylorsville, Ut.) who has run two wind-aided 12.03s.

200 Meters—Ashton Purvis (E.O.Y.D.C./St. Elizabeth, Oakland, Ca.) has been even more dominate here then she has been in the 60. As an eighth-grader in 2006 she was fourth in 24.24. She repeated that place the next year in 24.05. Last year she won in 23.54. Later in the year she set a national Sophomore class record of 23.43 to go along with the national freshman record of 23.55 she set the previous year. The junior class record is 23.26 and was set by Bianca Knight in 2006. Breyonna Hunter (Gardena Core/Serra, Gardena,Ca.) was tenth last year at 25.54. This past summer she improved to 24.26 at a USATF Regional JO meet. Cindy Robinson (Gardena Core/Norwalk, Ca.) ran 11.96 for 100 meters and 24.32 (wind-aide) for 200 meters. Kellie Schueler (Central Oregon/Summit, Bend, Or.) was the State 5A champion at 24.54 and had a best of 24.50. She also ran 54.70 for 400 meters.

400 Meters—  Turquoise Thompson (Gardena Core/Serra, Gardena, Ca.) has had a rough couple of years. Two years ago as a sophomore at Poly (Long Beach, Ca.) she was one of the best 400-meter runners in the nation and was just as highly rated in the 300 hurdles with best of  53.62 and 41.74, respectively. Then her season ended with a hamstring pull. The next year she moved to Serra (Gardena, Ca.) but had to sit the year out due to a transfer rule. With her season primarily reduced to the summer she made the best of the situation finishing second in the USATF Nat. JO 17-18 Division 400 in 54.18 and then won 400 hurdles in the same meet at 57.67 for the best time in the nation. Angelica Weaver (West Coast Heat/Rancho Cucamonga, Ca.) has best of 55.15 for 400 meters and 42.34 for 300 hurdles. She was the USATF Nat. JO 15-16 Division 400 hurdles champion in 62.02. Thandi Stewart (James Logan, Union City, Ca.) had a best of 54.84 for 400 meters. Freshman Iesha Hardiman (I.S.C. International) ran 55.16 last year to finish second at the AAU National JO age-14 championships.

800 Meters—Charlene Lipsey (Hempstead, N.Y.) returns to defend the title she won with a 2:14.24 and judging by the fact that she improved to 2:07.46 to win the State outdoor title that should not be too difficult. Nicole Soderburg (Canada) was third last year at 2:17.03 and Samantha Thompson (Sierra, Colorado springs, Co.) was sixth at 2:17.54. Jordan Diaz (Heritage/Leigh, San Jose, Ca.) was just 11th at 2:20.36 but improved to 2:11.13 and reached the State finals before finishing fourth at the Golden West Invitational. Chloe Carlton (Ogden, Ut.) ran just 2:21.36 but came back to win the State 3A title and record a best of 2:15.50. Ashlee Cervantes (Beaumont, Ca.) set a personal best in 2008 with a 2:15.67 at the Arcadia Invitational.

1,500 Meters—Candace Eddy (Davis, Keysville, Ut.) has been a force at Simplot for three years. In 2006 as a freshman she won with a 5:08.35. The next year she dropped to second but with a time of 4:58.77. Last year she won again  with a 4:54.57. Outdoors she ran 4:55.98 for a mile in finishing second at the Arcadia Invitational. Chelsea Graham (Canada) was second last year with a 5:02.65. Last year Kristina Vanderhout (Notre Dame Prep, Scottsdale, Az.) clocked 5:00.26 and 10:58.26 while competing for Xavier (Phoenix, Az.). Two other runners to watch are Shanna St. Laurent (Rancho Buena Vista, Vista, Ca.), who has run 4:58.87 and 10:59.88 and Damajeria Dubose (East Bay/Bishop O’Dowd, Oakland, Ca.), who ran 5:02.71 to just miss making the State meet.

3,200 Meters—Sarah Callister (Ogden, Ut.) was second last year at 11:02.31 but, based on her outstanding 10:48.32 at the Arcadia Invitational, she stands a good chance of breaking 11 minutes. Brooke Hodson (Alpha T-Wolves/Timpanogos, Orem, Ut.) was fifth last year at 11:31.35. Nicole Peterson (Aspen Mountain/Rock springs, Wy.) ran 11:20.19 to finish second in the State 4A meet. Freshman Kelsey Braithwaite (Box Elder, Ut.) is entered at 11:18.0

60-Meter High Hurdles—Trinity Wilson (E.O.Y.D.C./St. Mary’s, Berkeley, Ca.) is just a freshman but she has compiled quite a record in just over a year. Last year as an eighth-grader she ran 14.21 over the 100-meter 33-inch hurdles to set a national age-13 record and then ran 13.85 over the 30-inch hurdles to win the USATF Nat. JO 13-14 Division. She was even faster in the heats with a wind-aided 13.76. This year, she has the fastest indoor 55-meter hurdles at 7.94 and is No.3 in the national in the 60-meter hurdles with a 8.56. Victoria Johnson (James Logan, Union City, Ca.) finished sixth in the State meet, second at the Golden West Invitational and had a best of  14.22. Katie Nelms (Leland, San Jose, Ca.) won the Central Coast Section finals in 14.22. She also ran 61.59 for the 400 hurdles to win the USATF National Youth championships 15-16 Division.

High Jump—Samantha Balentine (Lodi, Ca.), who was sixth here last year at 5-2, has the best mark in the field with a 5-8 to win her league finals. Cate Brus (Cody, Wy.) was the outdoor State 3A champion at 5-7 in 2008 and has already done 5-6 indoors this season. Kaycee Brunel (YMCA Team Idaho/Nampa Christian, Nampa, Id.) and Melanie Vertees (Flying AJ’s/Kent Meridian, Kent, Wa.) both jumped 5-4 in 2008.

Pole Vault—Shade Weygandt (Mansfield, Tx.) was the winner at 13-1 in 2008 and based on her outdoor best of 13-10 she is likely looking to challenge the 14-foot barrier. In 2008, Kortney Ross (Westview, San Diego, Ca.) and Theresa Waybright (Borah, Boise, Id.) both cleared 12-4 and Brooke Arthur (Mater Dei, Santa Ana, Ca.) and Chelsea Barr (YMCA Team Idaho) both cleared 12-0. Sophomore Anna Bales (Cody, Wy.) improved her best by one-foot when she cleared 12-0 indoors earlier this year.

Long Jump—Andrea Geubelle (Flying AJ’s/Curtis, Tacoma, Wa.) was second last year at 19-1 ¼ and just kept improve with an outdoor best of 19-6 ½ . She was the State 4A champ and was the USATF National JO 17-18 Division champion with a wind-aided 19-8 ½. In 2008, Karynn Dunn (Socal. Cheetahs/Diamond Ranch, Pomona, Ca.) had a legal best of 20-2 and finished second in the State meet. She was third at the USA National Junior meet with a wind-aided 20-6 ¼. This winter Dunn won the Run For the Dream meet at 19-6 ¾  to rank No. 4 on the national indoor list. Sophomore Ciarra Brewer (James Logan, Union City, Ca.) has already set a personal best outdoor this winter with a 19-5 effort. In 2008, Allison Reaser (Gardena Core/El Segundo, Ca.) jumped 19-5 ¾ and both  Ashtynn Baltimore (Socal. Cheetahs/Marlborough, Los Angeles, Ca.) and Olivia Hudson (Teekay/Wilson, Long Beach, Ca.) jumped 19-1 ½.

Triple Jump—Ciarra Brewer (James Logan, Union City, Ca.) was third last year at 38-8 ½ and then went on to jump 41-8 ¼ to miss the national outdoor freshman record by just one-quarter of an inch. She also won both the USATF and AAU National JO 15-16 titles.  Brewer is already out to 40-11 ½ outdoors this winter so the national indoor sophomore of 41-1 ½, set by Ke’Nyia Richardson (Holy Names, Oakland, Ca.) in 2005 should come under assault. Andrea Geubelle (Flying AJ’s/Curtis, Tacoma, Wa.) won the State 4A title with a 39-10 ¾ and later had a 40-4 effort with no wind gage present. Karynn Dunn (Socal. Cheetahs/Diamond Bar, Pomona, Ca.) doesn’t spend as much time with the triple jump as the long jump but still has bests 39-4 ½ and a wind-aided 40-1 ¾.

Shot Put—In 2008 Anastasia Jelimini (Shafter, Ca.) won the State title and finished fourth at the USATF National Junior Championship with a personal best of  50-4, which makes her the No. 2 returner in the nation. Lauren Chambers (Throw1deep/Kell, Marietta, Ga.)  is the defending champion at 47-1 ½ after finishing second in 2007 with a 45-3 ½ effort. She improved to 48-0 ½ outdoors and is already out to 46-0 indoors in 2009. Breanna Radford (Throw1deep/Alpharetta, Ga.) had a best of 42-4 ½ in 2008 outdoors and this year has improved to 45-6 ¼ indoors.  Aslynn Halverson (Higher Power/Butler, Charlotte, N.C.) was second last year at 44-0 ½ and improved to 44-9 outdoors.

Weight Throw—Lauren Chambers (Throw1deep/Kell, Marietta, Ga.) won in 2007 with a 51-6 effort and repeated the next year at 58-10 ½.  She is out to 61-7 ½ already this season to put the national record of 62-2 set by Victoria Flowers (Classical, Providence, R.I.) under some pressure. Patrice Gates (Throw1deep/Villa Rica, Ga.) was second last year at 54-0 and has thrown 54-6 ¾ this season. Jazmin Miller (Throw1deep/Hiram, Ga.) has thrown 55-5 ¾ and Katie Bragg (Throw1deep/Starrs Mill, Fayetteville, Ga.) has done 54-2 ¾..

Relays— Since teams can but do not have to be made up of athletes from the same schools it is very difficult to evaluate the various events.
