| | | | | After freshman Lukas Verzbicas (Lincoln Way, New Lenox, Il.) set a national record in the 5,000 two days earlier, there was great anticipation with regard to just how he would run the 2 Mile race and how fast he would run. Early on, Verzbicas was in the middle of the pack, dropping to the rear at 600 meters and then taking the lead just past 1,200 meters. Andrew Springer (Westerly, R.I.), Zach Wills (Mason, Oh.) and Wes Rickman (Falcon, Co.) all remained close to Verzbicas through 2,000 before Wills dropped off. At 2,800 Verzbicas upped the tempo with just Rickman able to remain in contact, but by 3,000 meters, passed in 8:26.0, Verzbicas was gone with a final 200 of 31 and a national freshman record of 8:57.44. Wes Rickman was second at 9:01.92 and Bill Matthews (Baylor School, Chattanooga, Tn.) was third at 9:05.38, followed by Kevin Johnson (Falcon, Co.) at 9:06.24 and Springer at 9:06.25.
| Jordan Hasay (Mission College Prep, San Luis Obispo, Ca.) must have had thoughts about breaking the national record of 9:55.92 set by Melody Fairchild (Boulder, Co.) in this meet in 1991. She passed the halfway point in 5:01.0, which nearly matched Fairchild’s pace, but that was to be as close as she got to the record, as she slowed over the second half of the race and finished in 10:10.89. Given the fact that this was Hasay’s first-ever race on the boards, she should be happy with a time that ranks No. 6 on the all-time list. There was some intense racing behind Hasay. Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.), Emily Jones (Bromfield School, Harvard, Ma.), Lindsay Flanagan (Lake Park, Roselle, Il.) and Ashley Brasovan (Wellington, West Palm Beach, Fl.) were all together with 800 remaining. At 3,000 meters Jones passed Greany, only to see Greany retake the lead and go on to finish in 10:24.11. Jones was third at 10:25.76, Flanagan was fourth at 10:27.79 and Brasovan was fifth at 10:31.13. Greany, Jones and Flanagan all recorded personal bests.
