w e e k 5 > So, this week I made a return to the roads after taking a little more than a week off. I hate taking time off in the middle of the season, because it just throws off my whole routine. Going from running 9 miles fairly easily, to struggling through an “easy” 5 miler is pretty frustrating. So, between struggling through my runs and also taking midterms, this week was a rough one. This is what my training looked like though:

Monday: 6 miles

Tuesday: 6 miles

Wednesday: 7 miles

Thursday: 5 miles

Friday: 6 miles

Saturday: 5 miles w/ striders

Sunday: County meet (3200, 4x800) 9 miles

Since midterms were this week, I ran with Brendan Fennell most days. Running with Fennell is always a good experience, as he’s usually got a good story to tell or some “life lessons”. He’s trying to get back into shape, so it worked out pretty well this week that our runs were pretty similar in distance.

I’d just like to thank DyeStat for the privilege to write this blog. Even though I fell a little short in getting to Millrose, this blog was a good experience for me. I’d also like to congratulate Robby for his big win the other night. Also, I just want to say good luck to all of the other bloggers for the rest of the winter and spring.

Thanks everyone for reading, it’s been real.

w e e k 4 > Okay, so after a week hiatus my blog returns. A lot has happened since the last entry. My Road to Millrose ended up being a dead end; it’s ok though, life goes on. The week before the Hispanic Games my training had been going very well. Leading up to the race I had managed to increase my mileage as well as run workouts where I felt pretty strong. That week went like this:

Monday: workout (2x600-3x400-4x300-6x200) - 7 miles

Tuesday: 8 miles

Wednesday: workout (5 sets of: 2min. hard - 1min. rest- 1min. hard - 30 sec rest - 30 sec hard-30 sec rest.) - 9 miles

Thursday: 8 miles

Friday: 5 miles, easy pre-race striders

Saturday: Stanner Games Invitational mile- 8 miles

Sunday
: League meet- 9 miles

I haven’t gone for a run since my league meet because I’ve had the flu. That’s also why I didn’t write my blog last week; the whole week I stayed on the couch or in bed. The one thing that I’ve been doing to keep myself entertained is watching every season of Lost.

P.S. Throwin' a shout out to all the bros at Iona.

w e e k 3 > NO ENTRY

w e e k 2 > Monday: workout (20 x 200m on the minute) – 7 miles

Tuesday: 8 miles

Wednesday: 8 miles This week training went pretty well even though the weather was very crappy again. This was my schedule for the week:

Thursday: workout (3 x 200m hard, 5 x 1000m tempo, 3 x 200m hard) – 8 miles

Friday: 5 miles easy with striders

Saturday: Hispanic Games mile – 7 miles

Sunday: 10 miles

During the workout on Monday, I felt very strong. My coach and I had planned to run around 33-34 seconds which would give me 26-27 seconds rest. Instead, I ended up averaging about 32 seconds, so we were very happy with that workout.

During the [Hispanic Games mile] race on Saturday, I followed the plan that I had before the race as well as I could. I ran each lap in 32 seconds, and finished strong. I ended up running 4:18.7, which is a 5 second PR. I just felt like I didn’t have that extra gear at the end of the race. Hopefully, next week I’ll be able to find that gear and drop my time a little more.

Sunday, I ran with a kid from a nearby school, Matt Panebianco. It snowed all day Saturday, leaving the roads in horrible condition, which reminded me of the last time I ran with him. During the XC season, Matt and I decided to go for a 14 mile run through Jersey on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Seven miles into the run we got to a mini-mall parking lot. At the exit of the parking lot there was a lady stopped at a stop sign. Thinking we had the right of way at a stop sign and after making eye contact with the lady driving, we start to cross the intersection. The lady ends up gunning it, running over my foot and hitting Matt in the back. I was fine but Matt was a little shaken up. Of course, the cops come and there is a huge scene. Being stubborn, I just wanted to keep going since I was perfectly fine. The cops and ambulance drivers of course felt it necessary for me to go to the hospital. About 5 hours and an ambulance drive later, a doctor tells me I’m fine and can go. HUUUUGE waste of time but, made for a memorable run. Luckily, nothing like that happened this Sunday or I would have been really annoyed.

This upcoming week I’m racing at the Stanner Games in the mile, followed by our League Championship on Sunday. This is probably my last shot at making the Millrose Games, so hopefully I can get a ticket to the Games there.

w e e k 1 > Alright, now that cross country is over it’s time to get ready to race on the track. This winter my number one goal is to get to race at the Millrose Games. It’s probably just me being a hockey player and really wanting to run at Madison Square Garden where the Rangers play, but it’s also the history behind the meet. It has been a goal of mine ever since I started running to get to run where my favorite runner, Eamonn Coghlan, was able to make his name. Also, where all of the great names that have run in the meet, Bernard Lagat, Craig Mottram, Steve Scott, and Marcus O’Sullivan, competed. I’ve been taking my training pretty easy since the end of XC, and my mileage isn’t too high yet.

This week we just started to do some light racing, which we’re using as workouts. I started off the year racing at the Pearl River Holiday Festival where I won the mile in 4:34, not a great time but I’m content with the win. Then two days later I went to a meet at the Jersey City Armory where I raced in the 4x8, the 600m, and the 4x4. I split 2:02 in the 800, ran 1:30 in the 600, and then ran 55 in the 400. Besides those races it has been all distance for me. This past week was the first week we have started to bump up the mileage again. It has gone like this for me:

Monday: Race at the Jersey City Armory- 9 miles

Tuesday: 7 miles in the morning

3 miles in the afternoon easy

Wednesday: 9 miles

Thursday: 7 miles

Friday: Workout (3 x mile with 5 minutes rest) – 7 miles

5 miles in the afternoon

Saturday: 8 miles in the morning

Sunday: Workout (10k threshold run) – 8 miles

3 miles in the afternoon to loosen up

On Wednesday, I probably made the worst decision ever about running. It was snowing out, not too bad but still it wasn’t ideal conditions, so I thought it would be a good idea to try out the treadmill in my house that I’ve never used. About 10 minutes into the run my iPod broke, so 9 miles without music on a treadmill in my basement proved to be the worst run I think I have ever done in my entire life. I really should have just been a man and gone outside.

I didn’t feel all that great during my workout on Friday. I averaged 4:57 which is a second slower than last year but last year there was no wind and it was about 30 degrees warmer, but I felt strong and I just need to get into track shape.

Sunday’s threshold run felt good. I averaged 5:45 for the run, which is only about 3 seconds or so slower than I ran it during the first week of XC practice, so that was a positive sign at this point.

When all is said and done, the main lesson this week, kids: when faced with bad weather, man up and run outside because it definitely isn’t worth it to run indoors.
